The Marian Chapel is located to the side of the Basilica's main altar. Two memorial stained glass windows were recently added to the Marian Chapel to commemorate the visit of the Major Reliquary of Saint Therese of Lisieux in 2001.
The Stained Glass Windows are one of the most impressive collections in the Maritimes. A great deal of the windows were replaced after the Halifax Explosion of 1917. Stained glass windows serve many purposes in older churches. Beyond their obvious asthetitic value, they were a valuable teaching tool at a time when not all church-goers were literate. The Stations of the Cross paintings which line the sides of the Basilica recount the passion and death of Our Lord. They are commonly known as the Stations of the Cross. The paintings are part of a centuries old devotion, in which the faithful stop at each of the fourteen stations and meditate on its significance, and so reflect on the sacrifice of Our Lord at Calvary.
