South Phoenix is a neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. It is generally considered to be the area between 35th Avenue to the west, 48th Street to the east, the Union Pacific railroad tracks/Harrison Street to the north and South Mountain Avenue to the south. Major arterial east-west streets include Southern Avenue and Baseline Road, both of which connect South Phoenix with east suburban Tempe.
In the decades prior to the 1970s, South Phoenix was the only part of the city in which homes were sold to African American residents, due to restrictive covenants in place on housing in other parts of the city; during the early part of the 20th century (and arguably beyond that), Phoenix was almost as slow as parts of the American South to embrace the ideals of racial integration. With about 400,000 residents, South Phoenix is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance after being somewhat stagnant for several years. Since the early 1990s, golf courses as well as new housing, commercial and office developments have been built throughout the area. Some challenges to development in South Phoenix remain, as about 30 percent of the South Phoenix population is still made up of lower-income Hispanic and African American residents that have traditionally struggled with poverty, substandard housing, and higher crime rates as compared to more affluent areas of the city.
