South American Tropical Rainforest Exhibit. A unique structure, this exhibit covers 20,000 square feet and is completely enclosed by a fine mesh screen. The screen is suspended from towering poles which soar 55 feet into the air to create a free-flowing and natural environment for an abudance of plant and animal species found primarily in South America. All of the breeds in this special exhibit have been developed by man over thousands of years to produce valuable products for human use.
Some of the animals like the sheep produce fiber for clothing, meat and lanolin. Some of the animals have been bred for milk production such as the cattle and the goats. The llama was bred to carry heavy loads for man along with providing fine hair for yarn. Imagine walking into the new exhibit and hearing the siamangs' great hooting calls long before you see them brachiating high in the trees ahead. The siamangs and the orangutans will inhabit the same forested exhibit space. The tiger is stalking in its own forest habitat adjacent to, but separate from the orangutans and siamangs. Don't worry, though. They won't bother each other, but their proximity will be interesting for each.
