When you visit the African wildlife exhibits at The Living Desert, you will see some of the most unique and fascinating fauna found in what most people think as the "wasteland" of the world: the desert. Animals such as Arabian oryx, several species of gazelle, sand cats and fennec foxes, all call the desert home.
Most zoos feature exotic animals from other parts of the world. Here at The Living Desert, we include animals that live in our own ecosystem, the deserts of North America. One of the first stops on a tour through the park is the After Sundown exhibit. This showcases small nocturnal or night-active desert animals. The botanical gardens at The Living Desert are an expression of the philosophy and the personalities of all the many individuals who have had a hand in their creation and maintenance over the years. At Eagle Canyon, view our Golden Eagle, whose noble presence names this unique immersion exhibit. Come face-to-face with a pair of mountain lions prowling their territory or lounging high on cliff ledges. Gecko Gulch, the newest addition to The Living Desert, is an incredible, interactive outdoor play land that encourages children of all ages to create their own fun. The Living Desert's new family of young reticulated giraffes are here! And while they're only three years old, they already stand 12-14 feet tall. By the time they are adults they'll reach heights of 18 feet.
