Community theater, children's theater, Broadway shows, opera, jazz, country and rock performances, lecture series, private and community events - the Wheeler Opera House provides a venue for a wide variety of organizations and performances. When the Wheeler Opera House first opened its doors to theatergoers on April 23, 1889, the building symbolized prestige, progress and culture for the citizens of Aspen. Only ten years earlier, the first pioneer prospectors had come over the continental divide from Leadville and into the Roaring Fork Valley. Soon Aspen boomed from a muddy camp with three prospectors into a town with brick and stone businesses and an opera house that was among the largest, most-substantial and best-furnished buildings.Today the Wheeler hosts some of the hottest acts around, from jazz greats Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr. and country stars Lyle Lovett and Kathy Mattea to rock groups The Eagles and INXS. Broadway plays, film festivals, U.S. Comedy Arts annual festival, professional opera and ballet, and jazz, country and rock performances share the Wheeler stage with lecture series, school plays and private and community events. Twenty one years after its latest renovation the Wheeler continues to serve Aspen as a world class theater, performance venue and town meeting place and is still considered the crown jewel of Aspen.
