The Thunder Mountain Line takes you back in time to when folks moved at a slower pace and enjoyed the simpler things in life.
Your train ride offers amazing scenery as it winds around a narrow canyon along the beautiful Payette River. Depending on your route, the train ride will venture through sagebrush covered hillsides, pristine forests, mountain meadows, and range lands. As you roll out of the station you will travel along the same mountain trails as the settlers did in the early part of the century. Watch carefully along the route for fox, deer, elk, Blue Heron, Osprey, and Bald Eagles.
The Thunder Mountain Line offers several different routes throughout the year. Each train ride is a two and one half hour mountain railroading experience with the exception of the Cascade Limited, which is a five-hour trip. The history of the Thunder Mountain Line dates back to more than a century ago. The prospects for the railroad were originally to serve the Thunder Mountain Mining District, which was full of gold and ore. The current roads could not handle the incoming freight for these areas. Prospectors were filling the Long Valley area as mining districts and camps were forming. Gold fever soon spread and an entrepreneur named Colonel W. Dewey formed a railroad syndicate due to the suspected wealth in the areas.
