Cedar Rapids is a city that is home to thousands of Czech, Moravian and Slovak immigrants and their decendants since the turn of the Century.
Many more Czechs homesteaded and settled the farms and small towns surrounding Cedar Rapids. The Czech Village is a restored section of what was the shopping district for many of those immigrants. Up until WWII, Czech was the preferred language in the businesses that lined this section of Sixteenth Avenue. The Czech Village is still home to Sykora Bakery & Polehna Meat Market both date back to the 1920's, the Saddle and Leather Shop has only been here since the 1940's. Zindricks Czech Restaurant, Czech Feather and Down Co. and an assortment of antique shops and pubs round out the collection.
