How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland

Inside This Post Inside This Post

'Sup! Tad here — tween frog, head family videographer and young padawan — to tell you all about Savi's Workshop. This is the most popular experience at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland, so you'll need to be prepared if this is something you want to do when you plan your visit to the planet of Batuu. Don't worry ... this post will have you toadally prepped and ready! Here's what you need to know about building a Galaxy's Edge lightsaber at Disneyland.

Savi's Workshop at Disneyland - Adults with a Lightsaber

If you've read all about our ventures to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Resort, you know it's a ribbeting experience for the whole Frog Fam. Piloting the Millennium Falcon is more than I could have ever imagined, and dropping into Oga's Cantina is an out-of-this-galaxy adventure. But building my own Galaxy's Edge lightsaber at Savi's Workshop, well, this is the most toadally awesome experience of them all (and one I will never personally froget)!

Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber Pricing and Logistics at Savi's Workshop

Let's just get it out of the way. At $219.99 plus tax, this experience is a bit of an investment. (In case that number looks lower than fall 2022 pricing, the price actually dropped back down after a brief rise. So prices are subject to change.) You're paying to build your own lightsaber out of one of four different hilt styles, then adding customizable options under the tutelage of the all-knowing "scrap-metal Gatherers" in their super-secret workshop. While these Disneyland lightsabers are hefty, well-made items (way beyond what we'd consider a toy), you're mostly paying for the experience of building the lightsaber in the workshop, and it is sooooooo cool! Now you practical momma and poppa frogs may have your doubts about that price, but trust me, you're going to be toadally blown away by just how moving this 20-minute experience at Savi's Workshop is.

But is it really worth it? If you have a budding padawan in your midst and can afford it, we overwhelmingly think the answer is yes. Of course, if your whole family wants to build lightsabers, you will want to budget for this! It's important to note that for now, only one guest can attend the experience with the builder, so this is another logistic you'll want to work out ahead of time if you are visiting with two padawans.

How to Make a Reservation for Building a Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop

All the Ribbeting Details You Need to Build a Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland - Citizens of Batuu in front of Savi's Workshop Check-in Area

If you want to build a Galaxy's Edge lightsaber at Savi's Workshop, reservations are highly recommended, as walk-ins are limited each day. The good news is that the reservation system has gotten more flexible. You can now make a reservation up to 60 days in advance and may even find same-day availability. Walk up and ask if same-day times are not showing online. We know this makes holiday and peak travelers hoppy to be able to plan in advance.

You can make a reservation through the Disneyland app or at the Disneyland site. These reservations may fill up quickly, so definitely get a jump on it and be ready to reserve at 6 a.m. PT if you are hoping for a same-day reservation. You'll need to use a credit card to reserve. The no-show fee is $219.99, so keep your eye on the clock. Set an alarm for 30 minutes before. Missing that reservation would be an expensive mistake! If you make an advance reservation, you may cancel at least one day in advance to avoid the no-show fee.

The nice thing about getting a reservation is that you'll know before you even enter the park that you'll be able to build a Disneyland lightsaber. What a relief! Just be sure to check in at Savi's Workshop no earlier than 15 minutes before your reservation. Same-day cancellations are not allowed, so make sure you can realistically get to the reservation on time (allowing for traffic, parking, security, lines to enter the park, time to walk to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at the back of Disneyland, dining reservations, etc.) before you select a time to build.

If you are unable to get a reservation for Savi's Workshop, and this is your only chance to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, you can still buy a lightsaber. Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities sells legacy lightsabers from heroes and villains. The legacy lightsabers come with a sturdy protective case. The shop also sells a lightsaber clip. The clip fits all custom and legacy lightsabers. We've met some people in the park who managed to get a walk-up spot, but do not count on it.

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber - People lift their lightsabersHere are a few more important details about Savi's Workshop:

  • There is only one lightsaber per builder, per experience. (The guest accompanying a builder will not get to build.)
  • The Savi's Workshop reservation is for one builder and up to two guests. You do not have to list guests on your reservation.
  • The age recommendation for the experience is 5 and up.
  • At least one guest in your party must be age 14 or up.
  • Additional parts and customizations can be bought from Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities.
  • Custom lightsabers are not refundable or subject to discounts.
  • The experience takes about 20 minutes in total, though you'll need to be ready to check in about 15 minutes before your reservation.
  • Cancellations for advance reservations must be made at least one day in advance. Same-day cancellations are not allowed. A $219.99 "no-show fee" — basically the full cost of the experience! — will be charged to your credit card if you fail to check in for your reservation.
  • You do not have to use the credit card given at booking to pay for the lightsaber when checking in.
  • If you have a reservation at or just after park opening, arrive early. You can enter the theme park up to 40 minutes before the park officially opens.
  • If you want to ship your lightsaber home, hop into Droid Depot to take care of that.
  • Lightsabers come with a case and can be carried on a plane and stored in the overhead compartment. The hilt is removable.
  • You need theme park admission and a reservation to get to Savi's Workshop. Park hopping starts at 11 a.m.

Finding Savi's Workshop and Checking In

Savi's Workshop - Handbuilt Lightsabers Entrance

Just getting to Savi's Workshop can be its own challenge. The areas of Batuu are not well-marked, and besides, pretty much everything is written in the native Aurebesh language. Since lightsaber-building is a covert operation, Savi's Workshop is unmarked. So unless you're looking at the map online or using the Disney Play app, aka your datapad, you may have a little trouble finding it. Even the sign is in Aurebesh. It says, "By Appointment Only."

The inhabitants of Batuu aren't always as helpful as you might like. If you ask a cast member where you go to build a lightsaber, for example, they may ask instead, "Are you interested in purchasing some 'scrap metal?'" After all, you never know who is listening! The troops of the First Order can and do appear, along with Kylo Ren, so be prepared. Logistically speaking, the unmarked workshop is tucked into a set of buildings just across the way from Ronto Roasters between Droid Depot and Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities.

Once you've arrived, one of the workers will come around and explain the four hilt style options for you to select.

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber- -Choices

Here are the Galaxy's Edge lightsaber hilt options:

How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland-Peace and Justice parts

  • Peace and Justice
Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.

How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland-Power and Control parts

  • Power and Control
Originally forged by Dark Side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.

How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland-Elemental Nature

  • Elemental Nature
This theme embodies the Force — an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones and Rancor teeth.

How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland-Protections and Defense Pieces

  • Protection and Defense
Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

Check-In Process

You'll want to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes ahead of your build time to check in outside of the workshop. But you definitely don't want to be late, because you may not get in! You won't be allowed to check in earlier, but when there is so much more to explore in Batuu, we're not sure why you'd want to.

You'll decide which lightsaber hilt you would like to use. You can look at photos near the register, or see actual examples of the various styles in a cart with drawers to the left of the check-in area. You'll be given a cloisonné pin reflecting your hilt style. The pin is important because it will help the Gatherers know which hilt style you've selected. And it's yours to keep, so it's like a bonus souvenir!

After you check in, you will be waiting to go inside. The time waiting goes by pretty quickly because the Gatherers are interacting with everyone in your group, commenting on the funny "satellites" on people's heads (mouse ears) and sharing more about the customs on planet Batuu. This is a great time to ask about life on Batuu.

Savi's Workshop - Kylo Ren and Stormtroopers

If you haven't yet encountered Kylo Ren and the First Order, be alert, because they may stop by to inspect what's going on! The Gatherers work to keep the truth about what's really hoppening a secret!

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber- -Kylo Ren interrogates park guest

Remember, if the First Order does stop by to interrogate you, you are there for scrap metal and nothing more.

Warning — the rest of this post contains some spoilers!

Your Lightsaber Building Options

Once you check in, you'll be assigned to a build group and asked to put on your cloisonné pin.  After your build group is assembled, you and your guests will be escorted through the corridors of this dimly lit, cavern-like space to a small build room. You'll be stationed on the outside of a large, circular build area that the Gatherers can weave in and out of to inspect your work and bring out additional parts.

The lead Gatherer will welcome you into the workshop and explain the role of the Gatherers, who have traveled all over the galaxy collecting parts and bits of "junk" from abandoned starships and hidden planets that will be forged into these one-of-a-kind lightsabers.

Savi's Workshop - Kyber Crystals

You will begin your build with the kyber crystal, which imbues your lightsaber with energy. The crystal forms the heart of your lightsaber and determines the color of your blade. Your lead Gatherer will present one of four crystals to choose from, and other Gatherers will walk around with canisters of glowing crystals that you will select from.

Here are the kyber crystal colors available in the build:

  • Blue - Once held by Obi-Wan Kenobi and now Rey
  • Green - Once held by Master Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka
  • Violet - Rare and beautiful, once held by Master Mace Windu
  • Red - The crystal of power, once held by Darth Vader, Darth Maul and now Kylo Ren

Additional kyber crystal colors are available for purchase at Dok-Onder's Den of Antiquities.

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber- -Tray of Choices for Elemental

After selecting your crystal, Savi's Gatherers will bring out a tray of parts themed to your particular hilt style. They will instruct you on how to assemble the hilt, the foundation of your lightsaber. You'll have choices for some of the parts.

Each tray of parts includes:

  • 1 hilt
  • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
  • 2 emitters (pick 1)
  • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
  • And 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

Assembling Your Lightsaber Inside Savi's Workshop

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber- Hilt resting

The first step in assembling your hilt will be to place your kyber crystal inside the chassis and assemble the rest of the hilt from your assortment of grips, emitters and pommel caps and activation plates. This building can get a little tricky — especially if the instructions are explained quickly — but don't worry if you don't get everything assembled immediately. This is what the Gatherers are there for! They will walk around, inspect your work and make adjustments as necessary.

How to Build a Galaxy's Edge Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland - Lightsabers at Savi's Workshop

When the hilts have all been assembled, the lead Gatherer will ask everyone to step back so that the Gatherers can do the dangerous work of inserting the hilts into separate stabilization chambers. Inside the chamber, each hilt will be forged to its respective 31-inch blade! When that is done, it's time to forge the bond between lightsaber and builder!

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber - Lighting Up the sabersThe lights are dimmed and John Williams’ "Force Theme" plays as Master Yoda addresses the group, congratulating everyone on their work. Builders are then asked to step up to their individual lightsabers, put their hands on their hilts and activate their lightsabers while still in the chambers. They are then asked to raise their lightsabers all together as one! This is the most powerful moment of the whole experience — I still get goosebumps just thinking about it! Even if you're not a "Star Wars" fan, you'll be ready to go out using the Force!

Galaxy's Edge lightsaber- -Everyone lifts them

Power off your saber as you prepare to exit the workshop. You'll receive a saber sheath, and a padded case to protect your sabers, as you head out into the galaxy! You'll definitely be pulling out the lightsaber for more photo-ops around Galaxy's Edge, and they look toadally cool at night when they're turned on! After you are done building your lightsaber, you might want to hop next door to Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities to purchase a lightsaber clip for wearing your lightsaber.

Savi's Workshop at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland - Lightsaber and Padawan

Storing Your Lightsaber

Once you have completed taking all the photos of your lightsaber (we recommend getting some PhotoPass photos at night with it), you may find it cumbersome to carry around the park all day. You can drop it off at certain shops on the day of purchase with a receipt and pick it up before you leave. Droid Depot, Pioneer Mercantile and the stroller shop are great spots to leave it. Use the stroller shop if you are park hopping, since it's just outside the park gates. If you are a guest of a Disneyland Resort hotel, you can send your Galaxy's Edge lightsaber to your hotel gift shop and pick it up the next day. You can also have it shipped to your home!

Are you ready for the power and responsibility of building a Galaxy's Edge lightsaber at Savi's Workshop? Drop me a line and tell me what you're most ribbeted about. Remember that you need a Disneyland ticket and a theme park reservation to build a Disneyland lightsaber.

As long as you hold onto and show the receipt, you can ship it to your home the next day.

I just made a reservation for myself to build a lightsaber through the Disneyland App for October.. My Girlfriend will be my guest. I assume it’s normal that the reservation only lists “1 guest” which is myself but doesn’t list her at all. Like I’m just paranoid I somehow missed a step or part where I would have had to list her name and now they might not let her in? Im guessing you don’t list your guests who watch and that will just be confirmed when we’re actually there in line? Thanks!

Hi Christine!

There are three AAA batteries in a Savi's Workshop lightsaber. Initially, yes, they are included with the experience, though you'll need to replace on your own.

Hi,

We will have a 9 month old baby in our party - do you know if he would count towards the 2 guests allowed with the builder? We’re hoping one of the guests can take him in in a carrier making the party the builder plus 2 guests and a baby. Thoughts?

Hi Kim!

We would think you should be OK if he's with you in a carrier, but it may just be up to the discretion of the cast members at check-in (we'd suggest swinging by earlier before your reservation to confirm).

The light sabers are pretty durable so they may be able to take light dueling for casual use, but they aren't full battle proof (aka we wouldn't fully whack them against anything!).

It shouldn't matter when you have your reservation - they will have the parts! We tend to prefer nighttime so you don't have to carry it around for long and can get some great nighttime shots.

Not that we're aware of. You do need a credit card on file to make a reservation. But you can use a different credit card, Disney Gift Card, Disney Rewards Dollars earned using a Disney Visa Card, or cash for the actual payment once you're there at the park.

I know you need a park reservation to book the lightsaber workshop. However if your workshop reservation was after 2 pm, would a booking for any park be valid as you can then park hop? Thanks

Reply
Jan 23, 2023 at 8:57 a.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Louise!

The simple answer is yes, as long as you can park hop (whether you're at Disneyland or Disney World). At Disney World, park hopping hours start at 2 p.m. whereas at Disneyland, you can park hop starting at 1 p.m. (and as of Feb. 4, 2023, you could park hop starting at 11 a.m.). We would just recommend giving yourself at least a half-hour grace period so that you have plenty of time to enter the park and walk back to Galaxy's Edge.

Hi Ciarra!

Yes, you can store it at Droid Depot, Pioneer Mercantile in Frontierland or at the stroller shop on the day that you build and purchase it (with proof of receipt), so you can schedule it for any time that works best for you. If you want any night photos with the lightsaber lit up, then we'd suggest an evening reservation so you wouldn't have to carry it around all day or store it. (It will also be less crowded!)

Hi Laura!

It's more than likely up to the discretion of the cast members at the entrance. We'd say definitely ask to see if they could let your party in together and they may be accommodating (especially since the park gates usually open around that time for rope drop), but expect that it would not be possible, just in case.

Hi Angela!

We think you should be fine, but they may ask you to leave the stroller outside since the room is small and you would have to hold your tadpole for the entire experience.

We have 4 children (ages 10, 8, 5, and 2) plus one adult who would want to build a lightsaber. It says ages 5+, does that mean that they won't allow the 2-year old in? We were thinking that if we could get 5 reservations, the 2-year old would just be the "guest" for one of the builds (1 adult, 3 kids, plus the adult/guest combo). But if they won't let the 2-year old in at all, we will just skip it this time around. Or, do the other kids (ages 5-10) also need "guests" to accompany them? I'm so confused!

Hi Hankins,

You should be fine since you're together! The rule is there mainly so that there aren't any unaccompanied minors in the room, but since the adults will be there with them, the kids wouldn't need extra guests.

Would you happen to know if a 6 year old can build without a guest? Her dad, myself and her all three want to build, but the reservation seems to indicate that the builder or their guest must be 14 or older. :(

Hi Donna,

We know that at Disney World, it would be toadally fine for her to build on her own since all three of you would be building together. We imagine it'd be the same at Disneyland, but we welcome anyone else from the Frog Pond to chime in with their experiences.

Are the sabers made of metal - like the classic ones you can buy in another part of the park? or are the plastic? I have Anakin/Luke/Rey's and it rocks - are they like those?

Hi Bart,

The lightsabers from Savi's are very sturdy and use a combination of metal and plastic. The hilt pieces are metal, while the chassis inside is plastic.

Hi Kate,

We've made a repeat visit since our initial visit a couple weeks ago, and just wanted to let you know that you can still store items at Droid Depot, and you can ship items home from First Order Cargo. No other shops in the park will hold items though.

Hi Kate,

Yes, we'd suggest booking a later time, so you don't have to carry it around with you all day. Usually, there is a package pick-up service so you can pick up merchandise that you bought on your way out, but it may not be available at this time.

Hi Angel!

The park sells legacy lightsabers at Dok Ondar's. They do not sell the exact lightsabers from the experience since you will choose custom pieces at Savi’s. You can also purchase legacy lightsabers at Star Wars Trading Post in Downtown Disney. There is no ceremony at either store, but you may actually save money compared to doing the experience. Hope this helps!

We are interested in setting up reservations for both of my daughters. My question is, can you purchase the yellow crystal before your build experience and use that instead of one of the 4 they offer? My youngest (11 year old) wants to be like Rey.

Reply
Apr 1, 2021 at 3:10 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Randy,

Good question! Ultimately, it's up to the Gatherer's discretion, so you'll need to ask if it's OK to swap the crystals while you're building it. We've heard from other frogs that some cast members will allow it, while others politely ask you not to so it doesn't alter the experience's storyline. If it's not allowed, you can still purchase the white crystal (either before or after) and can easily swap it out once you've completed the experience.

Hi Melissa!

We'll let others in the Frog Pond weigh in as well, but we've been both pre- and post-COVID. To us, the only difference is that the cast members are wearing masks and there is an empty space between builders for social distancing - the rest is the same!

Hi! So I've been told that some pieces and sleeves won't line up properly (for example the defense and protection set), I was wondering if this was the case if you could ask for different parts of the same set so they can match up properly like advertised? I just don't want to have to bring home a $200 lightsaber that is all mismatched and not worth the money.

Hi Lucas!

We've had this hoppen to us, actually! When we came across two pieces that didn't quite fit together, one of the Gatherers found us another piece so that it fit. (We didn't even have to ask - he saw us struggling and grabbed a different piece from the same set for us.) There are plenty of people around to help and make sure that everything aligns and you're happy with your saber!

Hello, I’m merely writing for reference as to

inquiring about both savi’s workshop and the Theme Park. What times are the tours for Savi’s Monday-Saturday as for reserving by 7am? And has anyone requested Rey to accompany them as a guest? And your seasonal months you’re open for driving down from NY?

Reply
Apr 15, 2020 at 4:59 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi David!

There are times throughout the day for Savi's Workshop reservations from park open to park close, year-round (so roughly 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily, depending on the park hours). But these can fill up quickly, so you'll want to be sure to hop on an advance reservation if you can! You can book a reservation in advance here. Otherwise, you can see the spots still available same-day on the app, beginning at 7 a.m. PST. Have fun!

Hi Kevin!

Savi's at Disneyland and Disney World have different reservation procedures, so the comments you'll see on this post will mostly have to do with Savi's in California rather than Florida. Rather than getting on at 7 a.m. Pacific, you'll want to log in 180 days in advance of your trip to Disney World at 7 a.m. Eastern to try to snag a reservation. You can also see if Savi's is accepting walk-ups during your trip (though we highly recommend getting a reservation if you're able!). You can see all of the details regarding Disney World's Savi's Workshop here. Hope this helps!

Kids can bring toy lightsabers and adults can bring their lightsabers too. Ones purchased in the park are allowed back in. Other lightsabers may be allowed but cannot resemble a weapon.

Im going to Florida with my Choir class this summer. Im 17 and am not sure I will be able to make a reservation to build a lightsaber due to the way we are doing things there. We will be there for a few day. would I be able to build a saber without a reservation? If not im also thinking about just getting a Legacy saber because id really like one of those as well. Which is the better choice? Its honestly stressing me out.

Hi Ethan,

Have fun on your trip! You can always stop by Savi's Workshop at Disney World's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to check if they are taking any walk-ins, but availability is not guaranteed. Most of the times we've checked, it is reservation only but they often tell us to check back later in the day in case any standby spots open up. Sometimes last-minute spots do open up! It sounds like you're a big Star Wars fan, so we'd definitely recommend checking standby availability while you're at the park because the experience is toadally rad. But if you aren't able to get a standby spot, the legacy saber sounds like an awesome choice as well!

If you're looking for just a replica lightsaber (ilke Luke's or Obi-Wan's) instead of a custom one, you can always get them at the Star Wars Trading Post and they cost around $150 (this is at Disneyland's Downtown Disney...not sure of WDW.

Hi Susan!

You won't be able to enter Savi's without a reservation, but be sure to check the morning to see if any reservations open up! You can also hop by to see if they are accepting any standby reservations. If all else fails, you can head into Dok Ondar's without a reservation and can purchase legacy lightsabers, just like you mentioned :)

Hi Ariana!

While you can pledge your loyalty to the "Dark Side" at Savi's, there isn't a replica available to build during the experience. You can, however, hop over to Dok Ondar's Den of Antiquities and purchase a Kylo Ren legacy lightsaber there (next door to Savi's). The hilt comes with the two side blades, but the long main blade must be purchased separately, which is the case with all of the legacy lightsabers. Kylo Ren’s hilt is about $150 and the blade is about $45-50.
