For a magical outdoor adventure, look no further than the Cabins at Fort Wilderness! Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground at Walt Disney World offers a rustic, outdoor oasis, perfect for Disney and nature lovers. Accommodations include tent and RV camping, as well as fully furnished cabins. While we have a complete guide to Fort Wilderness, we wanted to take a deep dive into the Cabins at Fort Wilderness Disney World, so you know what to expect for your next vacation! The Cabins are undergoing a transformation into a DVC Resort, slated to open July 1, 2024.

Overview of Fort Wilderness

Founded in 1971, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is a timeless, woodland paradise. While on Disney World property (and eligible for the many on-site benefits), it also feels like its own little world. Fort Wilderness is as much the destination as the theme parks are with its many recreation offerings and laid-back community. Plus, the resort is even pet-friendly so your dogs are welcome to join!

Fort Wilderness offers both cabins and campsites (be sure to check out our guide to Fort Wilderness camping for more details). The Cabins at Fort Wilderness are perfect for families who vacation for longer periods of time and don't mind a day or two outside of a theme park. (And don't froget — you can book a cabin at a discounted rate through us frogs.)

Cabins at Fort Wilderness

Currently, the Cabins at Fort Wilderness are undergoing a major renovation and will become the 17th Disney Vacation Club Resort property. It's expected to open July 1, 2024 — you can become a member of this Resort starting Feb. 27, and bookings will be available as early as March 12, 2024.

The new cabins will be fully furnished one-bedroom suites, sleeping up to six adults and one child in a crib, with some that accommodate dogs. The floorplan will be similar to the former Cabins but with an updated look and modern comforts.

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Cabin living and dining area

Each cabin is decorated with woodland-themed lighting fixtures, wood panels along the walls, faux-wood chairs and framed pictures of wilderness-related Disney scenes and characters. The living room features a dining table, large HDTV and sleeper sofa that converts to a double-size bed.

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Bedroom in cabin

The one bedroom features a queen bed, a bunk bed (wahoo!), closet, dresser and smaller HDTV.

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Kitchen in cabin

The cabin's top-notch feature is the fully equipped kitchen. We're not just talking about a fridge and microwave. Disney has stocked the kitchen with everything you'd need to whip up full family meals. Open all the cupboards (and we did) and you find saucepans, measuring cups, a skillet, a cutting board, six sets of flatware, mason jar mugs and more. Also — a dishwasher, toaster and coffee maker!

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Cabin bathroom

The downside to the Fort Wilderness cabins is the smaller bathroom. At most Disney hotels, the bathroom area features two sinks and a vanity that are separate from the toilet and shower/bath. In a cabin, it's all in one bathroom, minus one sink. That may not be a problem for a family of three or four, but it could be unpleasant for parties of six.

One solution is the nearby Comfort Station which offers separate men's and women's restrooms and shower facilities. There is one Comfort Station in the cabin area, located by the Wilderness Swimmin' Pool. You'll use your MagicBand to access the Comfort Stations (including after-hours at communal areas such as the pool or restaurants). We found them to be pretty clean and well-maintained!

For outdoor dining and relaxation, your cabin features a spacious wood porch with a picnic table. There's a small charcoal grill located just down the steps from the porch.

Transportation at Fort Wilderness

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Golf carts

At over 700 acres, Fort Wilderness is anything but compact, but you'll find the resort isn't necessarily designed to be navigated by car. You can park your car at your cabin or campsite and use it to travel throughout Disney World if you wish, but internally, you'll want to utilize different transportation. You can use golf carts, bikes, walking or the internal bus loop to get around.

The cabins are located close to the entrance and the Outpost, which houses the horse trail riding and the bus stops for EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs. Heading inward, you'll come upon the Meadow, Fort Wilderness' recreation hub. At the furthest point is the Settlement, where you'll find a mix of different activities, dining, the Tri-Circle-D Ranch and the boat launch to Magic Kingdom.

We highly recommend renting a golf cart as the perfect way to travel throughout Fort Wilderness. There is space at each cabin at Fort Wilderness for one car and one golf cart. The cabin areas are about a 30-minute walk to the Settlement, so we recommend renting bikes or golf carts for faster travel.

Amenities, Recreation and Shopping at Fort Wilderness

Activities at Fort Wilderness in Disney World — Chip 'n' Dale's Campfire Sing-A-Long

The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Disney World have so many activities and recreation to enjoy. Hop into fishing, horseback riding, crafts, campfire sing-alongs and more! One of our favorite activities is visiting the Tri-Circle-D Ranch, where the working Disney World horses live (we even saw one of Cinderella's ponies last time!). With so many activities, you'll definitely want to allow some time outside of the theme parks. Check out our activities guide to Fort Wilderness for more information!

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Wilderness Swimmin' Pool

The Cabins at Fort Wilderness are closest to the Wilderness Swimmin' pool, though there is a larger Meadows Swimmin' pool with a slide. We like hopping in for a quick swim and often find it quieter than the main pool (plus there's a hot tub!).

For Disney merchandise and select supplies and groceries, the closest shop is the Meadow Trading Post. If you're staying at one of the cabins, groceries can come to you! The Meadow Trading Post offers a convenient delivery service. By filling out and sending or faxing in an order form three days before your arrival date, you can arrive home to a fully-stocked fridge and kitchen. Sure enough, upon check-in, we arrived to see all of our items on the kitchen counter and beverages cooling in the fridge.

Dining at Fort Wilderness

Fort Wilderness at Disney World — Pulled pork sandwich from P&J's Southern Takeout

There are plenty of great dining options to choose from at Fort Wilderness! The Settlement houses the frog-favorite Trail's End Restaurant, P & J's Southern Takeout (take a peek at the barbecued pork sandwich — yum!), Crockett's Tavern and the great Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show. Plus there are even food trucks on select nights! Since it's a bit of a drive to the Settlement from the cabins, it's better to eat over there, though you could always take it to-go back to your cabin.

Don't froget about your fully decked-out kitchen in your cabin! Gettings groceries can be a convenient and cost-saving way to enjoy some food in the comfort of your home-away-from-home.

What to Consider Before Staying at the Cabins at Fort Wilderness

With an abundance of activities, this is a great spot for folks who have visited Disney World numerous times and are in search of something different. You get the benefit of an outdoorsy vacation tied together with a Disney World trip. The cabins are perfect for a family as you can really spread out and feel right at home.
