Overview of the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks were originally known as the Portland Rose Buds before the team moved to Chicago — where it was given a position within the NHL franchise in the 1920s. Frederic McLaughlin, the team's first owner, was a commander of the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the U.S. Army's World War I Expeditionary Force. The team's name change was inspired by the 86th Blackhawk Division, to which he belonged while serving in the army. (And the Blackhawks name sounds a lot tougher than Rose Buds, am I right?) When McLaughlin's wife Irene Castle designed the black, red and white striped uniforms, she incorporated the image of Chief Black Hawk, the head of a Native American tribe in the Midwest, into the logo.
The Blackhawks compete in the NHL as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference. They've won six Stanley Cup championships in total — in 1933, 1937, 1961, 2010, 2013 and 2015 — and are one of the "Original Six" NHL teams, along with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. Since 1995, the team has played their home games at the United Center, on the west side of Chicago. The Blackhawks have a few major rivals. Their biggest competition includes the Detroit Red Wings, a long-time rival since 1926. Other rivals include the St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild.
