Overview of the Detroit Lions
Beginning as the Portsmouth Spartans in 1930, the team became the Detroit Lions when Detroit radio executive George A. Richards purchased them in 1934. That was also the same year the team started the Thanksgiving Day football day tradition — having played on the holiday every season since (aside from a brief gap from 1939-44). Between 1935 and 1957, the Lions won four NFL Championship Games (all prior to the Super Bowl era). Since then, the franchise has only won a single playoff game during the 1991 season and holds the longest postseason win drought.
Since the promising end to 2022, which saw the team winning eight of their last 10 games to finish 9-8, the Lions have only gotten better. For the 2023-24 season, they won the NFC North with a record of 12-5. Leading up to the season, general Manager Brad Holmes signed three of the top defensive backs in free agency and upgraded the running backs room in a big way — bringing in former Chicago Bears back David Montgomery. This season, 2024-25, will be the Lions fifth year led by coach Dan Campbell.
