Overview of the Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers compete in MLB as a member of the American League Central division. The Tigers are the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in the American League. Founded as a member of the Western League (which fell under minor league status) in 1894, the team is the only one of the Western League still playing in its original city. In 1901, the Tigers achieved major league status and have won four World Series championships since. Former center fielder Ty Cobb is still one of the most memorable Tigers from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, fans cheer on one of the Tigers' fiercest players — pitcher Casey Mize.
The Tigers' rivalry with the Chicago White Sox is one of the oldest in MLB. The team also has divisional rivalries with the Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins.
