Disney Craft: A Star Wars Weekends-Inspired Yoda Bag

by Crafty Staci on May 14, 2013

I grew up on Star Wars. Seeing the first movie when I was little opened up the world of science fiction to me and became the root of my lifelong love. The only thing that might surpass it on my list is Disney.  Imagine my excitement when Star Wars and Disney first began to form a partnership many years ago!  Now, celebrating my two favorites can happen easily by attending Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Yoda Bag

If you're planning to gather your younglings and head over to Disney World, I have the perfect accessory -- a Yoda Bag!  It only takes a few simple supplies, and the pattern is flexible enough it can be glued or sewn together.

To make this bag, you'll need:

  • One green felt rectangle, 9 by 12 inches
  • One black felt scrap
  • One white felt scrap
  • 3/8 - 1/2 inch wide grosgrain ribbon, 60 inches or less, depending on the size of the wearer
  • Black embroidery floss
  • Yoda Bag pattern

This bag can be assembled two different ways.  You can sew everything together, either by hand or machine, or glue together with craft glue. You'll notice in the photos that I sewed mine. If you choose to use glue, be sure to allow it to dry completely after each step. Also bear in mind, this is a small bag and isn't intended to hold many heavy items, especially if glue is used.

Yoda BagFold the green felt in half and cut the purse shape, aligning the fold with the bottom of the pattern. Cut two ears and four eyelids, also from the green. Cut two eye whites from the white and two eye centers from the black.  Measure the ribbon on your body to where you'd like your bag to hang, either from the shoulder or cross-body, and cut six inches longer.

Yoda BagUsing the printed pattern as a guide, place the eye whites in the appropriate place on the front of the bag. Either glue in place or sew.

Place the black eye center over the white. Glue or stitch.

Add the top and bottom eyelids, slightly overlapping the eye. Glue or stitch.

Using black embroidery floss, stitch a little mouth. If you're making this a no-sew project, you could also carefully draw the mouth on with a Sharpie.

Yoda BagFold the ears at the line shown on the pattern. Secure the edge with a few stitches or a bit of glue.

Yoda BagFold both upper edges of the bag to the inside one inch. Stitch or glue near the edge.

Yoda BagLay the bag inside up with the face closest to you. Pin or glue the ribbon right next to the edge at both sides, extending down 3 inches on each side.

Yoda BagPlace the ears on top of the ribbon using marks on pattern and pin or glue. The edge of the ear should extend into the bag about 1/2 inch.

Fold the front over the top of the ribbon and ears with the top edges even. Glue in place or stitch 3/8 inch from the edge and again just over 1/8 inch from the edge.
