What better way to celebrate a new year than at our favorite place — Disney World! New Year’s Eve is historically one of the busiest times at Walt Disney World. Don’t be scared away ... there is plenty of fun to be had as you count down to the new year! Special fireworks return to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT to ring in the new year — and every park but Animal Kingdom will be open past midnight! Here's everything we know about New Year's Eve 2023. Get your party hat (or ears) ready!

Guide to New Year's Eve at Disney World — Special fireworks at Magic Kingdom

Overview of New Year's Eve at Disney World in 2023

New Year's Eve events at Disney World are amazingly fun, but they also tend to draw crowds. Both Magic Kingdom and EPCOT will have special nighttime spectaculars for the occasion. Here are the current park hours, some of which recently got extended (there can be additional changes once we get closer, so be sure to check the My Disney Experience app or the Disney World website prior to your visit):

  • Magic Kingdom Park: 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • EPCOT: 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios: 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Disney Springs: 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

If you plan on hopping to Walt Disney World for New Year's Eve 2023, make your Park Pass reservation if you haven't already, and be aware that park hopping may reach capacity at certain parks.

While there may be some surprise festivities in store, we definitely expect special New Year's Eve food and possibly merchandise to be available at all of the parks. Holiday entertainment and hoppenings may still be going on at each of the parks, though the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays ends on Dec. 30. We also expect there to be some special New Year's Eve dinner menus at Disney Springs, which also offers lots of holiday merriment to enjoy, including the Christmas Tree Stroll.

If staying in at a Disney Resort, all resorts typically have a champagne package available to guests in their on-site retail stores, while supplies last! If you'd prefer to toast in advance in the parks, you can find a glass of bubbly (including champagne, sparkling wine or cider) at most locations around the theme parks and Disney Springs (including table-service restaurants at Magic Kingdom).

Here's a look at the festivities that generally hoppen all across Walt Disney World Resort to ring in the new year. We know we aren't the only froggies looking forward to 2024 — cheers!

New Year's Eve at EPCOT

EPCOT Fireworks — EPCOT Forever

EPCOT is by far the most exciting place to be on New Year’s Eve at Disney World, though with lots of activities come lots of people. As one of the largest parks, EPCOT is perhaps best suited for crowds. We think the crowds are worth managing for these fun-filled festivities! There’s no need to choose ... you can take part in all of these activities for a complete night of celebration.

New Year's Countdown Fireworks

The Countdown Fireworks show at EPCOT is the most popular way guests celebrate New Year's Eve at Disney World. A countdown to the new year is typically projected onto Spaceship Earth as fireworks light up the sky — we are hopful there will be some extra exciting projections. Enjoy a showing of the new nighttime spectacular, Luminous The Symphony of Us at 6:30 p.m., and then the countdown fireworks at 11:54 p.m.

EPCOT New Year's Eve Parties

Walk from Mexico to Canada (and from the old year to the new) at EPCOT’s New Year’s Eve parties. There may be live DJs hosting dance parties throughout the park. Dance the night away as you sip and savor some of your favorite flavors around World Showcase. These parties are a nice way to add some special fun to your holiday evening between your adventures on Test Track, Soarin’ and more. When it hits midnight in each country's respective pavilion, listen for a festive announcement and watch for a burst of colorful fireworks.

Live Music at American Gardens Theatre

American Gardens Theatre typically hosts a variety of performances throughout the night for the ultimate NYE entertainment.

To get an idea for this year's celebration at EPCOT, check out our video from last year featuring exciting dance parties and the special Countdown Fireworks:

New Year's Eve at Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is the most popular park and has historically been the most crowded during New Year’s Eve at Disney World. If Magic Kingdom is your park of choice, we recommend you arrive early and stay all day since it is likely to reach capacity for some part of the day. Save your viewing spot for parades and stage shows at least an hour in advance.

To add to your festive spirit, there are additional holiday offerings at Magic Kingdom. Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade is scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, as well as multiple showings of Mickey's Most Merriest Celebration stage show.

Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks

A Guide to Disney World on New Year's Eve - Fantasy in the Sky

The new year is sure to start with a bang — literally — thanks to Magic Kingdom’s Fantasy in the Sky fireworks. Our whole frog squad loves how wild and colorful this fireworks extravaganza is. Seeing the sky above Cinderella Castle glow with this booming presentation is a truly magical way to celebrate the new year. As a huge fan of fairytale magic and the sentiment of Magic Kingdom, this is my personal fave.

Magic Kingdom will show the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks Dec. 30 and 31 at both 6:30 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. We like having the extra night at Magic Kingdom as an option if you can't decide between this one and EPCOT's fireworks. We usually do Magic Kingdom on the 30th and then EPCOT on actual New Year's Eve for the best of both worlds!

New Year's Celebration Dance Parties

DJ dance parties are held at Frontierland, Tomorrowland and the castle stage. Typically available from 7 p.m. to midnight, these are a memorable, family-fun way to celebrate an awesome year of fun.

Other Places to Celebrate New Year's Eve at Disney World

New Year's Eve at Disney World - Chinese Theater

While EPCOT and Magic Kingdom are the main attractions for New Year's Eve, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate the new year throughout the resort!

Disney's Hollywood Studios typically offers regular nighttime entertainment, though sometimes a countdown is included. It's generally more low-key than the other parks. Enjoy the Wonderful World of Animation projections at 8:30 p.m. and Fantasmic! at 9:30 p.m.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom, you'll typically find special New Year's Eve-themed food and drinks. In previous years, DJs have kept the party hoppin' in Asia, Discovery Island and DinoLand U.S.A. With Animal Kingdom currently scheduled to close at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, it's a more peaceful and early way to celebrate the end of 2023 (just in time for the tadpoles' bedtime!).

While there won't be a nighttime spectacular, Disney Springs' special dining and shopping options never disappoint! Though the Christmas Tree Trail officially ends Dec. 30, the trees will likely still be up for you to enjoy.

Not wanting to brave the night crowds? Consider a relaxing night in at your hotel! Many of the resorts will offer special activities and select resorts even offer a view of the fireworks, such as Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. Over at Fort Wilderness, our kids colored, danced along with a live DJ, got to see Chip and Dale in their tuxedos (yes, really!) and even did some trivia.

Dining During New Year's Eve at Disney World

In addition to in-park celebrations, there are often special options available at Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Whether it's a NYE menu, a dance party, a champagne toast or a combination of all three, there's something fun for every froggy. In the past, these have included:

  • Toledo at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort
  • Mezzanotte at Topolino's: An Italian Masquerade at Disney's Riviera Resort
  • Atlantic Dance Hall at Disney's BoardWalk
  • New Year's Eve Dinner at the World Showplace Pavilion
  • California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort
  • Chef Mickey's at Disney's Contemporary Resort
  • Flying Fish at Disney's Boardwalk Inn
  • Garden Grove at Walt Disney World Swan Hotel
  • II Mulino at Walt Disney World Swan Hotel
  • Monsieur Paul within France Pavilion at Epcot
  • Narcoossee's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Shula's Steak House at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel
  • Todd English's bluezoo Lounge at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel
  • Victoria & Albert's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Victoria & Albert's Chef's Table at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Tips for New Year's Eve at Disney World

Here are our tips for making the best of New Year's Eve at Disney World!

New Year's Disney World - Fireworks at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

  • While the usual cancellation policy now requires only a two-hour notice at Walt Disney World restaurants, some of these special-occasion meals may require more of a cancellation notice. Review the fine print and know your options.
  • If you’re set on a certain experience in particular, call 407-939-3463 as soon as you’re able to purchase your tickets or book your dining reservations. Advance dining reservations are required for all special holiday meals.
  • If you’re attending the fireworks at either EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, bring earplugs for little ones, or maybe even yourself. (Heck, sunglasses might not hurt either.) These shows are beautiful but can be intense.
  • Note that at the parks, regular admission and a Disney Park Pass reservation are both required to access these special events — even if you have a dining reservation.
  • Annual Passholder and Tables in Wonderland discounts will not be honored for special holiday meals.
  • Avoid park hopping and arrive at your park of choice early because there's a good chance that the parks, especially Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, will reach capacity.
  • If you are trying to park hop, we suggest that you arrive right at 2 p.m. — or even prior to 2 p.m. You may need to wait in line at the park entrance, but the earlier, the better (otherwise, you risk the park reaching capacity).
  • Allow plenty of extra time for transportation, as parks are extra, extra busy on this day.
  • Most of you know the drill of getting your spots for fireworks early on a typical night, but be sure to post up extra early for the New Year’s spectaculars. Not only will there be more people for the special shows, but there are extremely high-volume crowds to begin with.
  • As attraction lines will be tremendously long during this peak season, we find waiting on a prime fireworks spot to be the most effective use of time. Of course, we always recommend having a family member grab snacks and drinks to enjoy during the wait!

There are so many hoppin’ activities to choose from to leap into the new year at Walt Disney World. When we’re at Disney World for a holiday, we really like to take advantage and celebrate in a special, unique way. What do you have planned? Tell us in the comments.

Hi Omar!

You won't find special fireworks, but you will see some special cupcakes to commemorate the day at Pizzafari and Restaurantasaurus! You may also see some special photo ops around the park. Enjoy your time!

Hi Nancy!

Generally, fireworks can continue in the rain, but if there are high winds and/or lightning, the show may be postponed or canceled. December is part of Florida's drier season, so it is less likely to rain (but as we saw this weekend, it's a possibility). While it's still a bit too far out to predict the forecast, we'd suggest keeping an eye on the weather as it gets closer so you can pack accordingly. You can find our favorite spots to watch fireworks at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT.

Hi Tris!

While we don't recall Magic Kingdom reaching capacity last year, we'd still recommend that you try to park hop early in the day (arrive before 2 p.m. and wait in line) and just stay there for the rest of the day, as Magic Kingdom is the most likely park to reach capacity on New Year's Eve. Alternatively, the fireworks show also takes place on Dec. 30 at Magic Kingdom if you don't want to stress over park hopping.

Hello!

We planned to go to MK on New Year's Eve but when we made reservations for the parks MK and Epcot were fully booked. Is there any chance that they become available again (free some capacity)?

Due to this situation we chose Hollywood Studios, is there any special event or fireworks at midnight o previous minutes?

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Eugenia!

While there aren't any guarantees that reservations will become available again, we'd still recommend that you keep an eye out in case anything opens up! Hollywood Studios is more low-key - there isn't usually a special NYE fireworks show, but there are some pyrotechnics in nighttime shows such as Fantasmic and Wonderful World of Animation. In past years, there has also been a DJ dance party to ring in the new year.

We're not sure if you have Park Hopper tickets, but if so, you could potentially hop to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT, though it's possible that park capacity could be limited. However, if you don't have Park Hoppers, we'd recommend going to Magic Kingdom on the 30th as the New Year's Eve fireworks happen on the 30th and 31st. Alternatively, if you prefer to see fireworks on the 31st, you could watch the EPCOT fireworks from Disney's BoardWalk or Magic Kingdom fireworks from the Transportation and Ticket Center — the music is piped in at these spots.

Hi which fireworks do you think are the best - Minnie’s Xmas fireworks, magic in the sky, Epcot, happily ever after?

Do you know if the Mickey Xmas parade from the Xmas party is held on dec 29 30 and 31 at MK?

Thanks!

Hi David!

If you're wanting holiday vibes, Minnie's Wonderful Christmastime fireworks show would be a must, as the others have classic Disney theming. At EPCOT, there is a normal showing of Luminous (which debuts Dec. 5, 2023, so it will be a new nighttime spectacular) early in the night around 6 p.m. and a special countdown that begins at 11:54 p.m. - it pays tribute to countries around the world and ends with, of course, a countdown to the new year.

Traditionally (though not confirmed yet), Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime parade does happen during the week of Christmas.

Hi again! My trip is nearing and I am still planning! :)

Could you please tell me if mickeys merry Xmas parade takes place on December 30th at MK and what times?

Also if you were to chose between Minnie’s Xmas fireworks show vs magic in the sky which is the best? As I believe that is shown on dec 29? But I’m thinking 3 days of fireworks in a row might get a bit much with NYE at Epcot as well!

With my daughter age 10 do you think she would enjoy Epcot on NYE if all the Xmas decorations are taken down, vs Epcot on Dec 30 and Mk on NYE. But would miss out on Epcot NYE fireworks.

Hi David!

It's still not officially confirmed on the schedule yet, but traditionally, Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime parade does happen during regular park hours during Christmas week (noon and 3 p.m. are the usual times). You can't go wrong with either fireworks show at Magic Kingdom, but it depends on what you'd prefer. If you want more holiday vibes, we'd say Minnie's Wonderful Christmastime fireworks, as Fantasy in the Sky is a more traditional fireworks show with classic Disney songs. The decor in EPCOT is usually still up through the new year — it's mainly the entertainment from Festival of the Holidays that is not guaranteed (such as the Holiday Storytellers or Candlelight Processional). But EPCOT does host fun New Year's Eve dance parties in some World Showcase pavilions - including silent disco, which is our favorite!

Why don’t they run festival of the holidays until dec 31? So if you want to see candlelight professional and the other Xmas celebrations you have to go to Epcot twice? My dilemma - I may only have 2 full days December 30 and 31 to choose between 2 of the 3 events - festival of holidays magic in the sky at MK and NYE itself

FrogBlog Says...

Hi David!

It ultimately depends on your priorities! If you want to see the Candlelight Processional and experience the Festival of the Holidays, we'd recommend going to EPCOT on the 30th, and you can still spend New Year's Eve at Magic Kingdom with the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks. But if you prefer to spend NYE at EPCOT, then you would need to spend two nights at EPCOT if you wish to see the Candlelight Processional. If you have Park Hopper tickets, you could potentially hop to Magic Kingdom if you attend the earliest Candlelight Processional at 5:15 p.m. as the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks are typically shown twice nightly at 6:30 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. on the 30th and 31st. You would miss the earlier showing, but if you're up for having two late nights in a row, you could catch the 11:50 p.m. showing on the 30th. The only caveat would be to keep an eye out if Magic Kingdom reaches capacity — you would not want to leave EPCOT and travel all the way to Magic Kingdom to find out the park is at capacity, which is a possibility.

Thanks for the advice! Tricky decision. If I do Epcot on both days I would also miss out on the Mickey Xmas parade at MK. If MK is the more likely park to reach capacity, could I start at MK on dec 30, park hop to Epcot late afternoon to catch the candlelight professional and wander the holiday festival, then return to MK for the fantasy in the sky 1150pm? If I have a park Res for MK I should be guaranteed to get back in? Would they let me park hop to Epcot even if it’s full if I had a dining package confirmation?

Then maybe on NYE I just have a lie in and go to Epcot in the afternoon for NYE? Realistically is it possible to do any rides in Epcot on NYE even with genie plus?

Finally can you tell me is there ANY holiday entertainment planned first week of January aside from the decorations remaining up?

FrogBlog Says...

Hi David!

We generally do not recommend park hopping on the busiest days (not only because parks could reach capacity but it can also take extra time for transportation and entry lines). Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are the two most visited Disney parks for New Year's Eve and have the possibility of reaching capacity; EPCOT does have a lesser chance because the park is larger and has more space for crowds. While typically a park reservation does hold a spot if you want to hop back, there are different capacity/closure levels and park reservations can be subject to capacity, availability and restrictions. Dining reservations do not guarantee entry if you were to park hop to a different park. The holiday season is from Nov. 11 through Dec. 31, so there is no guaranteed holiday entertainment beyond that date.

Exact details haven't been announced yet for EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays, though the dates have been confirmed for Nov. 24 through Dec. 30. We do expect that the scavenger hunt will return this year for the festival, but we're not 100% sure if it would be sold on Dec. 31. We'd also recommend playing the DuckTales World Showcase Adventure game through the Play Disney Parks app.

Hi! We will be visiting Orlando and we want to celebrate New Year's Eve in one of the parks. One of our family members isn't fond of theme parks and gets motion sick pretty easily. Do you happen to know if there are any evening tickets available at New Year's Eve. So that they can still enjoy the fireworks, but don't have to spend the whole day in the park? Thank you in advance!

Hi Amber!

Unfortunately, there aren't any evening theme park tickets. New Year's Eve is also one of the busiest days of the year, particularly at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT (parks with fireworks). It's one of the days that some of the parks could reach capacity, so we'd highly recommend purchasing tickets & making theme park reservations months in advance.

Hi! With only days until NYE, I’m trying to finalize our plans at EPCOT. We have park passes with EPCOT as our park of the day—if we head in around 9AM and then head back to our resort to nap, will we be able to get back in at 2/3/4pm since it’s our designated park for the day? Hi J!

We think it would be possible to park hop based on the fact that park hopping wasn't restricted last year on New Year's Eve. However, we'd encourage you to hop as soon as you can once it hits 2 p.m. (potentially even hopping earlier than 2 p.m. and waiting in line at the entrance). EPCOT would be our choice coming from Hollywood Studios as it's closer in proximity and has a larger capacity.

Generally, the parking lots usually open about an hour before official park open. Because it's one of the busiest weeks of the year, we may even suggest that you arrive about 10 minutes earlier - however, you don't want to arrive too early because they could instruct you to loop around until the toll booths actually open.

We would recommend any of the restaurants that have a special New Years Eve menu to make the dinner extra special! For this year, details have not been released yet (usually special foodie guides are released closer to the holiday), but we'd suggest that you make a reservation anyway just so you have one. Then once the information is announced, you could try to get a reservation at a different restaurant or stick with the one you have.

Magic Kingdom had a reported capacity closure Dec. 31. Hi

I noticed that Hollywood Studios has changed their hours to 12AM. Have you ever seen their new years eve fireworks? Im blocked out of MK and Epcot that day. Would love to ring the new year in at Disney if Hollywood Studios is worth it.

Also have you ever heard of Hollywood Studios reaching capacity on new years? I have to work during the day and wanted to head over there after.

Thanks.

Hi Mac,

It looks like Disney will be showing Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular at midnight, and there is no word if it will be a special performance for New Year's Eve. We have not heard of it typically reaching capacity, and especially with its NYE celebration not being released, we would not expect it for the evening.

Hello Bonnie,

I used to work at Disney, and Epcot has not close due to capacity in the last years. I believe you will be completely fine going to dinner and coming back, the only thing is don't expect to have great spots when you go back into Epcot due to the fact that it will be very crowded!

Happy New Year!!

Hi! Your blog has been very helpful thus far. My boyfriend and I will be in Disney Dec. 29th -January 8th and I am trying to decide what to do for NYE. I know you mentioned that the MK fireworks will occur on the 30th as well so I am considering doing those then and doing Epcot on NYE. Do you think the park will close to capacity on the 30th?? We have park hopper passes so I wasn't sure if we would need to spend the day in MK to ensure seeing the fireworks on the 30th. Thanks in advance! (:

Hi Amber!

This sounds like a GREAT plan (seriously!) but we WOULD recommend being at Magic Kingdom fairly early on the 30th. The parks have been known to get pretty crazy that day too.

Hi ???? is the Disney Vacation Club, New Year’s Eve Eve party worth attending? Since it’s the same fireworks on December 30 and December 31 at magic kingdom we were planning on going to that party on December 30.

On December 31, we plan to go to Epcot to enjoy the fireworks at Rose and Pub.

I called 1 1/2 month ago and they had said it wasn’t available yet. I’ve checked Disney website and haven’t seen any info about it for this year. Do you know if it will be available after a certain time like after September? Or is it available now only by calling? ... thanks in advance

Are the fireworks at Magic Kingdom (the park in Florida) on December 30th the same as the fireworks on December 31st (I am only concerned with the "later" display at approximately 11:50 P.M. both nights)??? Or is there a difference because the 31st is the "actual" holiday??? I saw the display tonight (the 30th) and I really don't want to have to watch them again unless I absolutely must (I want to avoid all the insane crowds and drunk Floridians tomorrow night)...

Hi Mitch,

CityWalk typically has an age limit after a certain time on New Year's Eve. Downtown Disney (now called Disney Springs) will likely offer some countdown activities, but if you want to see the fireworks, hop over to the Magic Kingdom area. Some of our favorite spots to watch them outside of the park are California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Ticket and Transportation Center.

I booked a trip to Orlando from Dec. 29th to January 5th. After reading reports online, it appears that Disney World is crowded and that is putting it mildly. Is it really that crazy? My wife and daughter are not ones that can handle crowds that well.

Would it make sense to visit the parks later in the week such as on January 3rd to 5th. I am also thinking of extending our time and possibly hitting the parks later (up to January 8th). Will the crowds somewhat diminish after New Years?
