Disneyland Refurbishments & Closings

by Leap on March 25, 2024 1066 Los Angeles

Inside This Post Inside This Post

As you get ready to plan your Disneyland trip, it's helpful to know which rides and experiences may be closed or undergoing refurbishment during your visit. Here is the full Disneyland refurbishment schedule and permanent ride closings. Permanent closures are attractions that are no longer active in the parks, refurbishments are temporary closures and seasonal closures take place annually. All of these refurbishments and closings are subject to change without notice. Don't fret! Hi Jacob!

If it's not part of an announcement, Disney does not usually disclose exact reasoning for refurbs, so we don't know why it's closing again for a second time in April. Right now, as of writing, the calendar goes out as far as April 16 and it's still listed as a refurb up to that point. We will continue to keep an eye on it and update once we know a reopening date. (We would hope it's before Pixar Fest starts April 26 - which, if we had to guess, could be a potential reason behind its closure, though nothing has been confirmed.) In general, our refurbs post gets updated weekly, so stay tuned!

Incredicoaster is closed starting 3/4, and the website shows it open starting 3/15 again, not listed under refurb anymore. Is this safe to assume it will be good to go for 3/18? Even though pages similar to this/news sources say “tbd”?

So sad that Haunted Mansion is closing January 22nd! We were at the park same time last year and it was closed our entire visit. I was hoping we would get to see it this time as this will be our last visit to Disneyland for quite some time. It says closed January 22nd - TBD, we are there from January 27th to February 4th. Does anyone know if this is a closure to take off the holiday overlay or something more? I am hoping that it will be open within two weeks of closing and maybe we will get to see it on the last day at Disney on February 4th!

The rumor is that the Haunted Mansion won’t be reopening until late August, and will be in its Nightmare Before Christmas version when it does reopen since it will be around the Halloween season.

Reply
Dec 13, 2023 at 1:19 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Christine!

Haunted Mansion typically closes during January to remove the holiday overlay. A return date has not been confirmed yet, as the calendar only shows park hours, entertainment showtimes and refurbishments up until Jan. 24 at this time. While this has not been confirmed as part of the refurbishment, we do know that Haunted Mansion is expected to get an expansion with new grounds and a gift shop in 2024. So it's possible that the refurbishment will take longer than the usual two weeks if Disney begins the expansion work simultaneously. But again, Disney has not confirmed when the expansion will take place, so we do not know for certain when it will happen. We keep this post updated weekly, so we will be sure to include any news once it's been confirmed or a return date is announced.

Even with availability showing for Jan 29-21, no time slots have been open. For 3 days I've been awake at 3;00 am (in case of early availability) until 7 am when reservations open. Refreshing the browser AND the app until the date is clickable. It's impossible for zero reservation times at 7:00:05 am. I kept refreshing until after 8 am. No slots available. I tried a different browser, deleting coookies, logging out and back in... Blue Bayou doesn't like me or they haven't released times yet. (I was able to make other reservations.)

What a bummer! Indy is down from Nov. 27-30?! Those are the only exact 4 days of the holidays that my family and I will be there, and that’s my most favorite ride of all since I was a little boy. And what a big bummer is that it may reopen on the 1st of December? That’s exactly when me and my family head home. I hope that Disneyland will rethink it and postpone the refurbishment till January or somewhere in December. ???? I hope they’ll make a decision like they did last year around that time and only have it closed for just two or three days and wait for the refurb. when we leave. But it’s just wishful thinking. At least no other of our favorite attractions there will be closed at the time for refurbishment. Me and my whole family always say, “closed for refurbishment is the biggest bummer news for visiting Disneyland.”

We see hours listed for Indy starting Dec. 1! For Incredicoaster the calendar does not go far enough for us to see at this point, but in a few days, you can go to the Disneyland site, look up Incredicoaster and use the calendar to put in your dates to see if it has hours that day. The calendar only goes up to 6 weeks in advance.

The daily events calendar (where you can see a list of refurbishments for each park) only shows up to June 9, at this time of writing. Refurbishments are always subject to change — while most of the time refurbishments stay on schedule, sometimes rides can open earlier than scheduled and other times the closures can be extended. Thanks for finally responding, and I really do appreciate it (please forgive my "little attitude" from before)...just one thing: why would they shut the Matterhorn down starting in April (which means it would probably still be closed over Memorial Day Weekend), especially since it was just closed for like 6 months last year? And during the "100th anniversary of Disney company itself"? Does this even make any sense to you? I do not actually ride that one because the "updated" vehicle hurts my ankles and knees too much, but I still like to LOOK at the mountain while I am walking around the park. And does this mean other rides could be shut down when I am there, too? I certainlly hope not!

Hi Ed!

If you're visiting Disneyland Park on April 18 and do not have a separate ticket to After Dark: Throwback Nite, then you would need to leave when the park closes to the general public. Official hours have not been posted yet, but Throwback Nite starts at 9 p.m. so it would likely be by 9 p.m. or potentially 8 p.m. (the same as After Dark: Princess Nite, which takes place starting at 9 p.m. on March 7 and 9, and official hours show the park closing at 8 p.m.)

Feb 24, 2023 at 2:37 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Rafael!

We wish there was a perfect combination of all the above, but you may need to compromise a little bit, depending on your priorities! Early August can continue to bring in summer crowds, but that timeframe may still have daily entertainment (though keep in mind that the entertainment schedule isn't usually released until six weeks in advance, so it's hard to guarantee a certain schedule until then) and Haunted Mansion usually stays open until mid-August before it closes for the holiday overlay refurbishment. However, the second half of August may see lower crowds once kids start going back to school, but that's when Haunted Mansion would be closed. We also often see an influx in crowds once the blackout dates for select Magic Key holders have been lifted, so regardless of summer crowds or lack thereof, there is potential for crowds around those dates.

We know that Grizzly River Run is reopening March 16, but still don't have a reopening date for Indiana Jones Adventure (other than sometime in spring 2023). In September, usually Haunted Mansion is closed from mid-August to early September to set up the holiday overlay, but it should reopen once Halloween Time begins, which is typically hoppens the first week of September.

When it says the Haunted Mansion is closed on the 30th, does that mean the last time you can go on the ride is at the end of the day on the 29th or the end of the day on the 30th? We are cutting it that close where our first planned day at Disney is on the 30th (but we are in LA as of the 28th). I would seriously considering changing our planned day at Disney to be able to experience this ride. Thanks!

Any word on when Splash Mountain will be closed for refurbishing in Disneyland? I see a closure date for the ride in Disney World but not Disneyland.

Will any rides be closed from May 14-17 2023? Just want to check before I book anything!

Hi Maryann!

At this point, we are not aware of any ride closures during that timeframe. However, we will point out that both Indiana Jones Adventure and Grizzly River Run will be closing Jan. 9 through "spring 2023" (with the exact date TBD). Ride refurbishments and unscheduled ride closures are subject to change without notice, so you can continue to check our Refurbishments post for the latest updates.

Hi! Any idea why Disneyland is closing so early on January 10th? The calendar shows they are closing at 9pm. Thank You!

Hi Heather!

In January, we generally see shorter park hours after the holiday festivities end (which will be Jan. 8 this year). We do see that Jan. 9 and 11 have a closing time at 10 p.m. though, so it's possible that it could be a private event or it's simply a low-capacity day so the parks are set to close earlier.

Any idea if holiday overlays for Haunted Mansion and it's a small world should be removed by January 21st and the rides will be up and running?

Hi Megan!

We don't have confirmed dates for Haunted Mansion or "it's a small world" post-holiday reopenings just yet, but keep hopping back — we'll update as soon as we know! For last season, Haunted Mansion was closed Jan. 10-20 and "it's a small world" was closed Jan. 24 to Feb. 3.

Will It’s a Small World be closed for sure until 11/10, or is there any chance it will reopen before then?

Hi, In the app the schedule shows Princess Meet and Greets at Royal Hall as closed after October 29th. Please please tell me that is not true-eek!? Hoping the schedule for the first week of November is just released yet?

Hi Jessica!

It's possible that it's simply because the hours have not been posted just yet, though we don't know for sure. On the Entertainment Schedule, it is not listed as "Closed for Refurbishment" on any dates in November. We'll keep an eye out in case anything changes!

Does anyone know for how long the Main Street Electrical Parade will last. My family and I are heading to Disneyland in August this year and hoping we catch the parade before it disappears again?

We will be in Disneyland May 26, 2022 on a Thursday will they have the light parade then or is that just on weekends? and also will Pirates of the Caribbean be opened by then?

Hi Sherri!

The Main Street Electrical Parade runs daily. Currently, the entertainment schedule shows 8:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. (but double check as it gets closer to your trip because times are subject to change). We still do not have a date for the reopening of Pirates of the Caribbean, so keep hopping back as we keep this post updated weekly!

Historically, on average, have refurbished rides stayed closed up until the date listed on Disney’s site (meaning odds are the dates listed are pretty accurate) or do they typically open earlier? Basically, does Disney often post a close to “worse case scenario” so as to not disappoint guests but often flexes?

Hi! I noticed that nearly all the reservations for California Adventure are nearly gone for March, with plenty of Disneyland reservations. Usually, it is the other way around - Disneyland reservations disappear first. Anything going on that I should be aware of when selecting which park to visit? Thanks!

Reply
Feb 24, 2022 at 1:20 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Mary!

Disney California Adventure is slightly smaller, so things tend to book up quickly - but in March, there is also Food & Wine Festival that's a big draw! If you have a park hopper ticket, you can always start your day at Disneyland and hop over to DCA at 1 p.m., without needing a separate res. Hope this helps!
