Disneyland Refurbishments & Closings

by Leap on September 16, 2019 828 Los Angeles

Hoppin’ Good News: We’re selling tickets to the Disneyland Resort! Take a look at our discounts on Disneyland tickets, including Park Hoppers for Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Ribbit!

As you get ready to plan your Disneyland trip, it's helpful to know which rides, restaurants and attractions may be closed or undergoing refurbishment during your visit. Here is the list of scheduled Disneyland refurbishments and permanent ride closings. Permanent closures are attractions that are no longer active in the parks, refurbishments are temporary closures, and seasonal closures take place annually. All of these refurbishments and closings are subject to change without notice.

Side note: It's no secret Disneyland Resort is going through some major changes! Disney California Adventure Park transformed Pixar Pier last summer, Disneyland Park added a Star Wars-themed land, Galaxy's Edge in summer 2019, and Avengers Campus, a Marvel Super Hero themed land, will open in 2020. (Read more about what's coming to Disneyland!) With changes, there are sometimes ride closures! Don't fret! There is still plenty to do and see at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Any idea what rides will be closed for Halloween overlay for 2017? We are going from august 20th to august 26th and I am scared everything will be closed at both parks now that they are bringing Halloween to DCA!

Hi Gina,

Besides the usual Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion at Disneyland closing late August, we aren't yet sure of when the DCA attractions that are getting Halloween overlays will be closed. We do know it'll be Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters receiving overlays; as soon as we know the dates, we'll post them. Keep checking back!

Hello. We are going to Disneyland in July. Do you have any more specificity regarding the closures than "Summer 2017"? We are interested in Tom Sawyer Island, the Disneyland Railroad, and Fantasmic. Does "Summer" usually mean by the first day of summer, or anytime during the summer season?

Thank you!

I hope you are right and the Disneyland website is wrong about the Matterhorn. We will be there April 25th. Second year in a row missing out on that ride! It's OK though Indiana Jones is going to running and my kid is tall enough now to ride it.

Just saw that Indiana Jones is going to be down for refurb starting May 1. I can't find any information on it online. Is this supposed to just be something short and fast or down for the long haul? Do you know anything about it? May is usually a weird month to start a refurb.

Hi Becky,

Disney has not posted a day for Matterhorn's re-opening, so we can't give an estimate. As for Golden Zephyr, we don't see that on any refurbishment schedule. If you post a link to the spot where you read that we can do some research.

Thanks so much for getting back to us. We have been tracking wait times for Disneyland and California adventure - mostly because we are excited for our family vacation next week - and just noticed golden zephyr always seemed closed. It's one of our favorites because everyone likes it (with six kids that can be hard to do sometimes). We are really going Matterhorn will only be closed for a few days since we go the 9-11, but I don't know how good our odds are with that. Oh well, you win some and lose some. Thanks again!

I'm going to Disneyland in April and one of my favorite attractions is It's Tough to be a Bug. Sadly, I haven't been able to experience it in years because every time I go, Disney is doing a commercial in that theater for their next big movie. Is there any way to know if it'll FINALLY be open when I'm there in April. I've been wanting to experience it again for such a long time! It's bad enough that my other favorite attraction, Tower of Terror is gone forever :(

The season closure for the haunted mansion says the beginning of January but does not state when it might open again. Also the it's a small world and splash mountain say closing mid January. Hi Tori!

Based on Disneyland's website, it seems the Haunted Mansion will be closed Jan. 9-19 for the holiday overlay removal. "it's a small world" looks like it will be closed Jan. 22-Feb. 2. These dates could possibly change. We'll update as soon as we know!

The seasonal closures section of our refurbishments post consists of estimates based on past closures, so these aren't 100% certain. Always check back!

Hi there! We are trying to plan a special trip with my daughter and her bestie to Disneyland, before they head off to different schools for high school. Does anyone happen to know how far in advance scheduled closures are listed? We have some flexibility and are trying to decide between late January or February, so I'd like to plan when there are the least expected closures. Our friend has never been, so we want to make sure she gets to go on as many of the "famous" rides as possible. Someone told me that January tends to be "refurbishment month," and that It's a Small World, Pirates, Haunted House, and Soarin are all often closed that month, so now I'm nervous! Any input would be so appreciated! :)

When I was there recently aside from the listed closures many rides close temporarily for the day. Kind of makes going a waste or time and money. Lots of money to pay just to shop and be pushed around. The haunted mansion was closed when it was time to use our Fastpass. Mermaid ride was closed on and off all day, Same with Snow White. Frozen times for Tuesday on the printed schedule they giv you are wrong, plus there was not a FastPass for that even though it was stated there was.Walked all the way to get the FastPass only to be told to show up 45 minutes before the show and hope to get it......Total waste of money at Disneyland and CA until the attractions open up.

I am taking my 2 children - ages 6 & 9 - to Disneyland for their first time. I grew up in Southern California so went frequently, but I can see that Disneyland is a whole different ballgame than when I used to go. My parents are coming with us (we will be 3 adults & 2 children) and have offered to pay for one night at a Disney hotel so that we can get early entrance to a park. I am trying to decide the best arrangement so that we can spend time at Disneyland, Ca Adventure, and I know the boys will want to play at the hotel (especially water slide if the weather is warm enough). We will be going the first week of November, likely arriving Monday 11/7 at the park, driving from north county San Diego (approx 1.5 hours depending on traffic). With this plan, we'd go straight to Ca Adventure park and spend the day there so that on Tues we could take advantage of magic hour for Disneyland. My question is are there cool things to do in Ca Adventure at night, as we won't be able to stay until close at Disneyland on Tuesday. Should we spring for park hopper tickets and spend Monday evening at Disneyland? Do you have any other ideas for how to maximize fun and minimize lines & exhaustion? My brother-in-law said we should spend 2 nights at the hotel and 2 days in the parks (as opposed to 1 night/2 days), but I am not sure that is in the budget. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca,

Be sure to catch World of Color in DCA. We love the way Cars Land lights up at night and there is plenty to see and do. We use single rider lines and FastPasses. If you are too late to get tickets to Frozen Live, hop in the stand-by line about an hour before the show. The parks close early both those nights (at 8 and 9 p.m. both nights), so that means no nighttime entertainment/fireworks at Disneyland.

Most of the refurbishments are done in off-season, but I would expect to see the continuing closures around the construction of Star Wars Land. Park hours get released about three months in advance.

Keep hopping!

What are the chances of opening before planned? After 10 years I finally talked my husband into going and we were so excited, then I realized the ride we most looked forward to (grizzly river run) will be closed and it opens just 3 days after we leave! Such a bummer. Do they ever finish refurbs early? I'm hoping for good news lol

I'm visiting Disneyland in April and I'm planning on staying at the hotel but I don't want to if the pools are closed. How definite do you think those reopening dates for the D-ticket, E-ticket, and Minnie spa are?

Hi Fergus,

It sounds like from other comments that the hotel would not yet say definitively, but I would recommend calling them directly. These are the official refurb dates, but they are always subject to change.

Hi!

I am planning a vacation for April 10-13 and I really want to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. I see that you have the pool reopening in March. Disney won't give me a firm answer on when it will reopen. Is that the actual opening date? I don't want to stay there if the pool is closed. Thank you!

Hi Amanda,

I am sorry that you haven't been able to get confirmation from Disney. This information we have comes from Disney, but it is always subject to change, so unfortunately we cannot say for certain.

I just read on another site that a Haunted a Mansion will be closed in DL 1/11/16 to 4/2/16. That can't be right can it? That would be 3 months. I See on DL website that it will close on the 11th but info isn't available for the end of Jan. Is it closed as part of the Stat Wars project? I'm FREAKING out as its my favourite ride and it's my first time going in 11 years! We are going Jan 26 to Feb 3 last day in park Feb 2nd.

Hi Brynn,

Disney has not made the reopen date public as of yet. Normally, these two rides are under refurb after the holidays to remove the seasonal overlay for just a couple of weeks.

Hey! Just chatted online with Disney and double checked some other sites. Haunted Mansion will be closed January 11-21st, reopening on the 22nd. So it won't be closed for long, just long enough to remove the holiday decorations! YAY!

Hello,

Going to Disneyland Nov 12-14. The Disneyland website shows Haunted Mansion and Its a Small World as "schedule unavailable." Are these rides closed? We were so looking forward to them changing for the holiday theme.

Thanks,

Brian
