Disneyland Refurbishments & Closings

by Leap on March 25, 2024 1066 Los Angeles

Inside This Post Inside This Post

As you get ready to plan your Disneyland trip, it's helpful to know which rides and experiences may be closed or undergoing refurbishment during your visit. Here is the full Disneyland refurbishment schedule and permanent ride closings. Permanent closures are attractions that are no longer active in the parks, refurbishments are temporary closures and seasonal closures take place annually. All of these refurbishments and closings are subject to change without notice. Don't fret! There is still plenty to do and see at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

Aside from the Disneyland calendar showing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as being closed on Oct 2, and every day thereafter, there is no information about when it will reopen. I am eagerly checking the calendar each day hoping it will be back up by October 20th, but does anyone have any info in this closure?

Disney needs to open a new report/park near Leggoland. There are too many people coming up from south of Orange County to attend the park. Our family has pretty much given up on Disneyland. It's always too crowded. We refuse to pay $100's to stand in long lines, behind obese, tatted-up, trashers. Used to be a nice park, but now the LCDs have lowered the culture. Things are sooo expensive in CA. I just don't understand how people can afford maintaining a lifestyle of getting both child-art tats and going to Disneyland?! Must be my supportive tax dollars at work.

Where do you get your information from? A lot of the rides that are mentioned on this site say that they'll be closed but if you go to the actual Disneyland website there's no mention of them. Also trader Sam's closing down is just a rumor and there's no information on that anywhere either so I'm just wondering where you got your knowledge from???

I am fairly certain that most and/or all attractions at Disneyland should be "up and running" during Presidents Day Weekend, as well as during the following week...I also am fairly certain that most and/or all attractions at Disneyland should be "up and running" during Spring Break Season...What I am not certain about is whether most and/or all attractions should be "up and running" during the week-or-so that is "sandwiched" in-between those 2 VERY busy times...My guess is probably they are, since there is not very much time to completely shut things down to do "proper" repairs, but then again, I have not been to Disneyland at that time of the year in AGES and it seems as if the park management has made MANY changes to the way they handle refurbishments...if anybody can shed some light on this issue for me, please reply!!!

Why do you close two major rides down on labor day weekend when that is kids last chance at visiting before going back to school? We will be there Aug 29-Sept 2nd. Thanks so much for getting back to us. We have been tracking wait times for Disneyland and California adventure - mostly because we are excited for our family vacation next week - and just noticed golden zephyr always seemed closed. It's one of our favorites because everyone likes it (with six kids that can be hard to do sometimes). We are really going Matterhorn will only be closed for a few days since we go the 9-11, but I don't know how good our odds are with that. Oh well, you win some and lose some. Thanks again!

I'm going to Disneyland in April and one of my favorite attractions is It's Tough to be a Bug. Sadly, I haven't been able to experience it in years because every time I go, Disney is doing a commercial in that theater for their next big movie. Is there any way to know if it'll FINALLY be open when I'm there in April. I've been wanting to experience it again for such a long time! It's bad enough that my other favorite attraction, Tower of Terror is gone forever :(

Hi there! We are trying to plan a special trip with my daughter and her bestie to Disneyland, before they head off to different schools for high school. Does anyone happen to know how far in advance scheduled closures are listed? We have some flexibility and are trying to decide between late January or February, so I'd like to plan when there are the least expected closures. Our friend has never been, so we want to make sure she gets to go on as many of the "famous" rides as possible. Someone told me that January tends to be "refurbishment month," and that It's a Small World, Pirates, Haunted House, and Soarin are all often closed that month, so now I'm nervous! Any input would be so appreciated! :)

When I was there recently aside from the listed closures many rides close temporarily for the day. Kind of makes going a waste or time and money. Lots of money to pay just to shop and be pushed around. The haunted mansion was closed when it was time to use our Fastpass. Mermaid ride was closed on and off all day, Same with Snow White. Frozen times for Tuesday on the printed schedule they giv you are wrong, plus there was not a FastPass for that even though it was stated there was.Walked all the way to get the FastPass only to be told to show up 45 minutes before the show and hope to get it......Total waste of money at Disneyland and CA until the attractions open up.

I am taking my 2 children - ages 6 & 9 - to Disneyland for their first time. I grew up in Southern California so went frequently, but I can see that Disneyland is a whole different ballgame than when I used to go. My parents are coming with us (we will be 3 adults & 2 children) and have offered to pay for one night at a Disney hotel so that we can get early entrance to a park. I am trying to decide the best arrangement so that we can spend time at Disneyland, Ca Adventure, and I know the boys will want to play at the hotel (especially water slide if the weather is warm enough). We will be going the first week of November, likely arriving Monday 11/7 at the park, driving from north county San Diego (approx 1.5 hours depending on traffic). With this plan, we'd go straight to Ca Adventure park and spend the day there so that on Tues we could take advantage of magic hour for Disneyland. My question is are there cool things to do in Ca Adventure at night, as we won't be able to stay until close at Disneyland on Tuesday. Should we spring for park hopper tickets and spend Monday evening at Disneyland? Do you have any other ideas for how to maximize fun and minimize lines & exhaustion? My brother-in-law said we should spend 2 nights at the hotel and 2 days in the parks (as opposed to 1 night/2 days), but I am not sure that is in the budget. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca,

Be sure to catch World of Color in DCA. We love the way Cars Land lights up at night and there is plenty to see and do. We use single rider lines and FastPasses. If you are too late to get tickets to Frozen Live, hop in the stand-by line about an hour before the show. The parks close early both those nights (at 8 and 9 p.m. both nights), so that means no nighttime entertainment/fireworks at Disneyland.

The website shows closed as of Monday, Oct 3rd. Any idea on this? October 2nd is our first day in the park so I'm hoping we'll get a chance to ride it that day before it closes!!

I'm going the same week and just noticed it's been added to the list! So disappointed. It wasn't when I booked either - and our first day is the first day it's closed :(

Hi Grace,

Disney refurbishments are tricky! They sometimes change without any notice. As of now, we're seeing that it's officially closed on Monday, Oct. 3rd. If anything changes, we'll be sure to update this post. Crossing our fingers for you!

HI,

I am planning to go to Disneyland in the beginning of November 2016 and was wondering if you know of any rides that will be closed during that time.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Ellen,

Space Mountain is usually closed for a small period of time during the beginning of November to remove the Ghost Galaxy overlay. We'll post the dates as soon as we have them!

I am wanting to take my daughter to Disneyland for her third birthday- around the 22 to the 25th of January. Do you think a lot of rides will be closed for refurb? Will this be a busy time? Thanks!

Hi Ashley,

Haunted Mansion and it's a small world are usually closed during the middle or end of January to remove the holiday overlay. We don't have exact dates on this yet, but we'll post as soon as we do; those are usually the main rides closed during that time. Definitely keep checking back, though! As far as it being a busy time, the end of January is a good time to go. There shouldn't be too many crowds since the holidays and school breaks are over.

I noticed today that Indiana Jones was added starting September 12 (2016) and The Little Mermaid was added for just after Labor Day. Any ideas when they may be open? Also- is there any news for the week of September 20 by chance?

Hi Rachel,

At Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion and it’s a small world are generally closed early to mid January for the overlay removal and are closed for a couple of weeks. As soon as we know exact dates, we will post them!

When is soaring over the world going to open in Disney California? Also what about a new show at the Hyperion theater? When will they have the dates for trick or treating in Disneyland?

Hi Lyn,

Soarin' is scheduled to open June 17. The new Frozen show is coming this summer, but they have not released the date yet. They usually announce the Halloween Party dates in July.

Hi there! We're planning a trip towards the end of August. This will be the first "summer trip" as we usually go after Labor Day. Unfortunately, because of that, we always miss the Haunted Mansion due to the redecorating for the holidays. I really don't want to miss it this time. Can you please tell me when it will shut down this year? Thank you!

Hi Liz,

We never know for sure until Disney officially announces it, but looking at past years, the ride usually closes the end of August (right before Labor Day) through mid-September (around when Halloween Time starts) for the holiday overlay. We post the dates as soon as we are notified, so keep checking back!

Hi Rose,

In peak times such as July, most rides are open (minus those currently closed as part of Star Wars Land construction).

Will Disneyland be busy the Saturday of the Tinkerbell Half Marathon? Trying to decide if we shuffle our days around to ride on Pirates before it closes?

We are trying to plan a trip for July, but I can't find any time guides for them. WDW usually fills out their calendar 6 months in advance. When will Disneyland release park times and guides for July? I'd like to know how many attractions will still be closed.

Hi Guera,

Most of the refurbishments are done in off-season, but I would expect to see the continuing closures around the construction of Star Wars Land. Park hours get released about three months in advance.

Keep hopping!
