Summary

As you get ready to plan your Disneyland trip, it's helpful to know which rides and experiences may be closed or undergoing refurbishment during your visit. Here is the full Disneyland refurbishment schedule and permanent ride closings. Hi Sherri!

The Main Street Electrical Parade runs daily. Currently, the entertainment schedule shows 8:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. (but double check as it gets closer to your trip because times are subject to change). We still do not have a date for the reopening of Pirates of the Caribbean, so keep hopping back as we keep this post updated weekly!

Historically, on average, have refurbished rides stayed closed up until the date listed on Disney’s site (meaning odds are the dates listed are pretty accurate) or do they typically open earlier? Basically, does Disney often post a close to “worse case scenario” so as to not disappoint guests but often flexes?

Hi! I noticed that nearly all the reservations for California Adventure are nearly gone for March, with plenty of Disneyland reservations. Usually, it is the other way around - Disneyland reservations disappear first. Anything going on that I should be aware of when selecting which park to visit? Thanks!

Hi Mary!

Disney California Adventure is slightly smaller, so things tend to book up quickly - but in March, there is also Food & Wine Festival that's a big draw! If you have a park hopper ticket, you can always start your day at Disneyland and hop over to DCA at 1 p.m., without needing a separate res. Hope this helps!

When in late August does Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain typically close for refurbishment? We are considering a Disneyland trip (if we are allowed in….we are Canadian!) and don’t want to miss out on those rides! Our dates are somewhat flexible but we are aiming for mid August. Thanks!!

Hi Nicole!

Last year, Haunted Mansion closed Aug. 16, which has been the earliest it's closed for the holiday overlay installation. It typically closes on a Monday a few weeks before Halloween Time starts. Space Mountain hasn't had a Halloween overlay in a while, so we have removed this reference.

Your blog is simply the best! Thanks for all the wonderful advice! We just booked a trip to Disneyland January 5 - 8th and my favorite ride is Thunder Mountain Railroad. Reply
Oct 18, 2021 at 5:26 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Sherry!

The holiday overlays for Haunted Mansion and "it's a small world" usually come down a few weeks after Holiday Time ends (which is Jan. 9 this year). In the past, Haunted Mansion has been first and then "it's a small world," one at a time. Exact dates have not been confirmed yet. Other rides could come down for smaller refurbs but nothing has been announced yet. Grizzly River Run sometimes gets refurbished during the winter. As for the weather, it varies in January. You can typically expect an average high of high-60s to low-70s and an average low in the 50s, but it can get as low as the 40s and as high as the 80s. Rain is possible, but it depends, as it can rain at night but stay clear in the day. We recommend dressing in layers and if the weather calls for rain, bring a poncho or umbrella.

Hi Cherra!

Disneyland has not officially announced dates yet for holiday overlay closures, but we can see that "it's a small world" starts showing no operating times, beginning Oct. 25. That's as far as the calendar goes, so we think it's safe to say that "it's a small world" will be closed from Oct. 25 through Nov. 11, reopening for the first Disney Merriest Nites party that night and Holiday Time the next day. As for choosing between your two options, October 25-28 will still have Halloween Time, which is a lot of fun but will be busier than Nov. 1-4 (which is generally a quieter time with Halloween decor going down and Christmas decor starting to pop up). Hope this helps!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently under refurbishment, and it does not have a scheduled date for reopening yet (we'll update this post when we find out, but it should be sometime in fall 2021). At this time, there are no refurbishments scheduled for the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Jungle Cruise or Space Mountain. We anticipate that they would be open (especially the Matterhorn Bobsleds since it was recently refurbished), but Jungle Cruise and Space Mountain could close for holiday overlay installation/removal, so ride schedules are subject to change. We are planning on visiting at the end of Feb 2020. Thanks!

Hi Josh!

We can imagine what a bummer that was! The good news is that that is a rare occasion. They usually post park hours on the Disneyland site 6 weeks in advance. When Disneyland closed early for an event in June 2019, the park made an announcement that guests would receive bonus time in the park in certain lands past the posted closing time, so how it’s handled must vary depending on the event. Check the park hours and if you see an unusually early closing time of, say, 6 p.m. during your visit, be sure to ask cast members about when the shops will close. Looking at the February schedule, we do not see any early closures on the calendar and do not anticipate any problems for you!

We are planning a trip in May and wondering what attractions will be closed at that time

Hi Elizabeth!

As of right now, there are only a few refurbishments that don't have an end date just yet and may extend into May: Those are Snow White's Scary Adventures, Haunted Mansion and King Arthur Carrousel. We update this list each week as we hear new information, so be sure to hop back as your trip gets closer!

Hi Steve!

We don't have the exact dates for 2020 just yet, but in 2019, the Haunted Mansion was closed from Aug. 26 - Sept. 6 to install the Holiday overlay. We think odds are pretty good! Keep hopping back closer to your trip, as we'll continue to update this post!

Hi Heather!

While we don't have an exact date that Haunted Mansion will be done with its Refurbishment, it doesn't look likely that it'll reopen until spring. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news! We'll keep this page updated as we know more!

We are going January 26th-31st. Can you tell me anything about closures for Its a small world? It says it reopens on the 17th. Do you know it is did open? Also, Splash Mountain and the Jungle Cruise are listed as having seasonal refurbishing but there are not actual dates. Do you know if those will be open or closed while we are there?

Thank you!

It says no Downtown Disney refurbishment, but the Jamba juice has been, and as far as I'm aware, still is closed for refurbishment.

Hi, my husband and I are in our 60's and looking forward to coming on Feb 24th 2020. I saw the older postings about the Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, and other rides closing for refurbishing just ahead of our coming. Do you know the re-opening dates yet?

Haven't been there in 22 years and could be our last time so want to be sure as many of the rides we want will be open.

Thanks.

Hi Suzanne!

Haunted Mansion does not have an end date for its refurbishment just yet, and while we know that Indy is going to undergo a refurbishment in 2020 as well, those dates haven't been released just yet. We will continue to update this post as we hear more, so be sure to hop back! We hope that you and your husband have a wonderful trip - be sure to get celebration buttons from City Hall to mark the occasion!

In late August/early September question: how long is the haunted mansion closed for the prepping of Halloween? We are going in the week of 13th will the park be completely done with Halloween decorations?

Hi Valerie!

The overlay usually takes about 2 and a half weeks to put up. In 2019, the ride was closed from Aug. 26 - Sept. 6 to install the overlay. We don't know Halloween Time's dates for 2020 just yet, but in 2019, Halloween Time began on Sept. 6. If 2020 follows 2019's trends, you'd be good to go! We'll be sure to update our Halloween Time post as soon as we have more information for 2020!

Good news, Diz heads! The week of 2/16, the following rides are shown to be open at least through 2/19: Grizzly River Run (reopens 2/14, which is so cool because I've NEVER been on it!), Splash Mtn, Indiana Jones. Sadly, there are no fireworks or nighttime spectaculars for my visit, Tues-Thurs, but I'm so glad we get two of our top attractions plus a new one.

The list shows Hyperspace Mountain is closed January 7th, is that only one day? I'm visiting the 9th-11th and would hate to miss riding it!

Yes, the refurbishment is just one day to remove the Hyperspace Mountain overlay. Space Mountain will be back up and running on Jan. 8.

Going to Disney for only the 2nd time ever. I wondered if you knew approximately how long Space Mountain is being refurbished? I also heard rumors that they are changing the ride so you have to wear glasses for it? Is this correct? My husband and I are going for our 5th year anniversary the first week in March. Any information you have would be great!

Hi Steph!

We haven't heard any news about needing glasses! The refurbishment is only set to last for one day (Jan. 7) to remove the Hyperspace Mountain overlay. Space Mountain will be back up and running on Jan. 8. We'll be sure to update if we hear anything new!
