I had to chuckle as I wrote this one; these meltdowns seemed like such a big deal at the time! Now they’re wonderfully hilarious memories that I’m sure aren’t experiences of only the Frog Family, am I right? Read on...
Meltdown #1... “My ice cream is all over me! I’m gonna die!”
Translation: Lily’s Mickey Mouse ice cream bar melted onto her brand new Minnie Mouse t-shirt. Prevention: She now requires her father to bring an extra t-shirt for her in his already overstuffed backpack. What can I say…we’ve created a monster.
Meltdown #2... “What do you mean you drank all the coffee? Are you nuts?”
Translation: Leap drank the 2 cups of “coffee” provided with hotel room coffee maker and I had to wait to go to the lobby to get some. Prevention: Yes, hotel room coffee is very close to water, but I must have something to tide me over until I can make it to the food court for the full-strength stuff! I make sure to have an extra packet or two in the room before bed each night.
Meltdown #3... “My battery just died with 5 minutes left of the show! What about my YouTube fans?”
Translation: Tad’s camera battery ran out of juice with 5 minutes left of Dream Along with Mickey and since he sees himself as the next Tim Burton, all he could think of was letting down his “public.” No kidding. Prevention: We make sure to have several extra batteries with us. If Tad’s going to video a long show, he doesn’t chance it with a slightly used battery; he just pops a fresh one in.
Meltdown #4... “What do you mean we can’t go swimming at midnight? WHY WHY WHY?!?”
Translation: I said the curse word “NO” to Tad and Lily’s request for a late night dip in the pool on our last trip. Prevention: There is no preventing this one. They’re kids so they’re going to complain when I say no, but guess what? I’m the Mommy!
Meltdown #5... “I’m light-headed, my blood-sugar is plummeting and I think I’m going to faint!”
Translation: Leap swore he was going to die of starvation waiting in line at Cosmic Ray’s at 6:30 p.m. during our night at Mickey’s Very Christmas Party last year. Prevention: We try to avoid eating at a Disney restaurant during regular meal times no matter what time of year. We also pack snacks so no one in the family (not even the “grown-ups”) have a hunger melt-down.
Meltdown #6... “How am I supposed to be a pirate without my sword? Huh?”
Translation: Tad’s pirate sword (apparently THE integral part of his Halloween costume) broke during last year’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Prevention: What was I thinking letting the kids pick costumes with so many accessories? We stick to cool but simple costumes now.
Meltdown #7... “What did you do with my misting fan, Tad? WHERE IS IT??? Mommmmmyyyy!!!!”
Translation: Lily dropped her misting fan somewhere between Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. Prevention: I buy packs of these from Oriental Trading before each trip and pack them in our suitcases. They drive me nuts and are notorious for being dropped or broken. But as long as they make the kids happy and are easily replaced, I’m OK.
Meltdown #8... “Uh oh...Where did our tickets go?!?”
Translation: Approaching our next FASTPASS machine, Leap realized our tickets must have flown out of his lanyard on Splash Mountain. Prevention: Before we ride any coasters or wild attractions, whoever is holding the tickets puts them in a safe place like our backpack. (We also make a copy of the backs of our tickets and keep it in our suitcase.)
Meltdown #9... “I AM tall enough to ride...I grew overnight!”
Translation: Lily tried to convince us to sneak her onto Rockin’ Roller Coaster by stuffing her tennis shoes with toilet paper.
Meltdown #10... “Noooo, Nooooo...We don’t want to leave!”
Translation: Full Frog Family meltdown as we’re loading the lily pad on the last day. (It happens every time.) Prevention: WE COME BACK!
