Houston Texans Overview
Despite being the youngest franchise in the NFL, the Houston Texans are a force to be reckoned with. Founded by Houston entrepreneur Bob McNair in 1999 as a replacement for the city's previous NFL franchise, the Oilers, the Texans began playing as an expansion team in 2002. In their first opening game, they defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 19-10, making them the first expansion team to win their opening game since the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Chicago Bears in 1961. Victory aside, the Texans struggled during their first few seasons, but their fortune took a turn for the better when native Houstonian Gary Kubiak became the head coach in 2006. Five years later, they won their first division championship and clinched their first playoff berth. Since then, they've gone on to win five more AFC championships.
Under the direction of head coach DeMeco Ryans — former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator — the Houston Texans ended their three-year AFC title drought, making it to the playoffs in 2023 for the first time since 2019.
