Overview of the Miami Heat
Debuting as an expansion team in the 1988-89 season, the Heat gained popularity in the mid-1990s when Pat Riley became team president and head coach. Riley was the mastermind behind the trades for Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway — both of which led the team to four consecutive division titles. Subsequently, the Heat's drafting of Dwayne Wade in 2003 and trade for Shaquille O'Neal in 2004 resulted in the team winning their first NBA title in 2006.
In 2010, the Heat made basketball history when they signed reigning league MVP Lebron James and NBA All-Star Chris Bosch — creating the "Big Three," along with Wade. During the four years of the team's dynasty, they made it to the NBA Finals every season, culminating in back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. Upon the departure of the "Big Three" in 2016, the Heat entered a period of rebuilding. Since the team acquired All-Star Jimmy Butler in 2019, they've returned to the NBA Finals twice (in 2020 and 2023). A force to be reckoned with, especially known for their never-give-up attitude and star-studded rosters, the Miami Heat hold the record for the NBA's third-longest winning streak.
