Overview of the MLB Season
In Major League Baseball, 30 teams are equally divided into the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), with each league consisting of West, Central and East divisions. Each division consists of five teams.
Spring Training
Teams report to Spring Training camps in February for several weeks ahead of Opening Day. During this time, new players from the Minor League teams can try out for roster spots and established MLB players get plenty of practice before competitive play, so game lineups are often a mix of both. Managers may even swap out players earlier than usual during the game. While fans are welcome to attend these exhibition games, most teams have Spring Training locations in Florida and Arizona — forming the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues respectively — so teams aren't necessarily playing in their home cities or ballparks.
Regular Season
Every season, each team plays 162 regular-season games. Due to schedule format changes that started with the 2023 season, each team faces its divisional opponents in 52 games total. For example, that means the New York Yankees play 13 games each against the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. The newer schedule format also allows for each team to play all other 29 teams at least once during the season, upping the amount of interleague games. In July, there's a midseason break for the MLB All-Star Game.
Postseason
Typically taking place in October and sometimes extending into November, 12 teams advance to the MLB Postseason for a chance to clinch the World Series championship. Hop over to our complete breakdown of the postseason for more insight on how a team can win it all.
2025 MLB Schedule Highlights
Leading off the 2025 season, the Chicago Cubs and defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers will face off March 18-19 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the sixth time in MLB history that a season opener takes place in Tokyo, and it will be the Dodgers' first time playing in Japan. Also part of the 2025 MLB World Tour, the Boston Red Sox and the Sultanes de Monterrey will play a pair of exhibition games on March 24-25 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
During the following week, Opening Day sees 28 out of 30 teams play exciting matchups on March 27, 2025 — the earliest Opening Day in MLB history. Only the Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies will be off, starting their series the next day, to add some extra prep time for the Rays settling into George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The minor league field will be the Rays' home field this season due to Tropicana Field sustaining damage from Hurricane Milton. Some divisional rivalries will go head-to-head, including the Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays.
One key change for the 2025 MLB schedule is that prime Interleague rivals will play six games against each other (compared to four games last year). This means that each club will have two fewer total games against non-division league opponents. In 2025, each club will host the same Interleague opponents as in 2023, while 2024 pairings will repeat in 2026. Expect rivalries to heat up in May! From May 16-18, 11 out of the 15 series are matchups between prime Interleague rivals, including the Mets-Yankees, Angels-Dodgers, White Sox-Cubs and Cardinals-Royals.
In July, serving as the symbolic halfway point, the All-Star Game highlights fan-favorite and top-performing players from the National League and the American League. Starting position players are voted in by fans, pitchers are selected by the league's managers and reserve players are selected by managers and players. The 2025 All-Star Game will take place July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
The iconic racetrack Bristol Motor Speedway will host the first-ever MLB Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 2, 2025. It also marks the first MLB game to be played in Tennessee.
The 2025 season concludes Sept. 28, with all 30 teams playing Game 162. Eight games will feature divisional matchups, which could determine the fate of a team and its potential to clinch a postseason spot.
