Overview of the MLB Season
In Major League Baseball, 30 teams are equally divided into the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), with each league consisting of West, Central and East divisions. Each division consists of five teams.
Spring Training
Teams report to Spring Training camps in February for several weeks ahead of Opening Day. During this time, new players from the Minor League teams can try out for roster spots and established MLB players get plenty of practice before competitive play, so game lineups are often a mix of both. Managers may even swap out players earlier than usual during the game. While fans are welcome to attend these exhibition games, most teams have Spring Training locations in Florida and Arizona — forming the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues respectively — so teams aren't necessarily playing in their home cities or ballparks.
Regular Season
Every season, each team plays 162 regular-season games. Due to recent schedule format changes that started with the 2023 season, each team faces its divisional opponents in 52 games total. For example, that means the New York Yankees play 13 games each against the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. The newer schedule format also allows for each team to play all other 29 teams at least once during the season, upping the amount of interleague games. In July, there's a midseason break for the MLB All-Star Game.
Postseason
Typically taking place in October and sometimes extending into November, 12 teams advance to the MLB Postseason for a chance to clinch the World Series championship. Hop over to our complete breakdown of the postseason for more insight on how a team can win it all.
2024 MLB Schedule Highlights
Leading off the 2024 season, rivals San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers faced off March 20-21 in Seoul, South Korea, marking the first MLB regular-season games ever played in Korea. A week later, Opening Day sees all 30 teams play exciting matchups on March 28, 2024. Reigning World Series champs Texas Rangers face the Chicago Cubs at home in Arlington, TX. Some rivalries will go head-to-head, including the New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros and the Atlanta Braves vs. Philadephia Phillies.
In addition to the Seoul Series, three other international series will take place throughout the season as part of the MLB World Tour. During Spring Training, the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox played March 9-10 in the Dominican Republic. The Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies will compete April 27-28 in Mexico City. In London, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies will confront each other across the pond from June 8-9.
In July, serving as the symbolic halfway point, the All-Star Game highlights fan-favorite and top-performing players from the National League and the American League. Starting position players are voted in by fans, pitchers are selected by the league's managers and reserve players are selected by managers and players. The 2024 All-Star Game will take place July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX.
This season, there will be two planned doubleheaders — Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (May 8) and Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants (July 27). This means there will be two games played by the same teams on the same day, so fans can witness double the innings!
A special game night in Birmingham is planned for June 20, 2024, at Rickwood Field, the oldest professional ballpark in the United States and former home of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. As part of the league's Juneteenth celebrations, MLB will pay tribute to the legendary Willie Mays and the Negro Leagues with an honorary regular-season game between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.
The 2024 season concludes Sept. 29, with all 30 teams playing Game 162. Eight games will feature divisional matchups, which could determine the fate of a team and its potential to clinch a postseason spot.
