Overview of the New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans, formerly known as the Charlotte Hornets, relocated to Louisiana in 2002. While they competed in the NBA's Eastern Conference during their first two seasons, they moved to the Southwest Division in the Western Conference in 2004 — to even the number of teams in each conference. Because of the devastation brought about by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the team temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City for two seasons. Upon returning home in 2007, the Hornets played their most successful season ever and won their first division title. In 2013, owner Tom Benson changed the team's name to the Pelicans — inspired by Louisiana's state bird.
In 2019, the Pelicans drafted Zion Williamson and also acquired Brandon Ingram from the Los Angeles Lakers. Williamson was named NBA Rookie of the Month in February 2020. In the same season, Ingram became an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career and won the 2020 Most Improved Player Award. However, various injuries (including Williamson's foot injury which kept him benched the entire 2021-22 season) have held the team back from reaching the playoffs in recent years. If they can stay healthy, the Pelicans are capable of winning more than 40 games and advancing to the postseason.
