Overview of the New York Knicks
The Knicks are a legendary basketball team that has two NBA championship wins. Past iconic Knicks team members include number one draft pick Patrick Ewing and, later, Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks compete in the NBA as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks are one of two NBA teams in New York City. The Brooklyn Nets, one of the Knicks' biggest rivals, also play in NYC, in the borough of Brooklyn. Other longstanding rivals include the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls.
The historic Knicks team was founded in 1946. The Knicks are one of two original NBA teams still located in its original city. (The other is the Boston Celtics!)
The Knicks have a dedicated fan base that fills Madison Square Garden in New York City, which they share with the New York Rangers NHL team. Basketball fans may be surprised to learn that despite New Yorkers' reputations, the fan base is a class act, giving respect to other teams and players while cheering hard for their beloved "Knickerbockers," (as they were formerly known, named for the pants worn by Dutch settlers to the New World). Former Chicago Bull Michael Jordan loved playing at Madison Square Garden because of the bright lights, the fans and because it's "where you come to see the best basketball played.”
