Here’s how it works…you tell the kids you’re going on a boring business trip, drop them off at the in-laws and then head to the parks for an “adults-only” week of fun. Whether you’re going with your significant other or taking a group of your best girlfriends, here are a few tips to have as much fun as possible.
Scheduling (or Lack Thereof)
On an ordinary Orlando vacation, I schedule every detail from what time to wake the kids to where we’ll eat our afternoon snack. This is NOT the case when it’s an adults-only trip. I still like to have a general idea of what we’re going to do each day, but it’s nice to just relax and “play it by ear.”
Value Resorts like the Disney’s All–Star Resorts and Pop Century are popular among families (including mine). With this popularity comes lots of, well, let’s call it “energy and excitement.” When Leap and I travel sans tadpoles, we like to stay at a Moderate Resort like Caribbean Beach or a Deluxe Resort like Disney’s Polynesian Resort for a little more peace and quiet.
Choosing the Best Ticket
When it’s just the “big kids” we always choose tickets that give us the most flexibility. Since we move through the parks much faster and know which attractions we want to see at each park before hopping to the next, Park Hopper tickets for Disney and Park to Park tickets for Universal Orlando are must-haves.
If we stay at an on-site hotel, transportation to and from the parks is taken care of; we just hop on the bus or water taxi and enjoy the ride. If we go somewhere outside of the resort area, however, we always take a cab. Cab fare from Lake Buena Vista to Universal Orlando Resort and International Drive costs about $50. Cab fare from International Drive hotels to Universal Orlando Resort is only about $15. There are always plenty of taxis outside the nightspots, so you’ll have no problem getting back to your room after a night out on the town.

Finding Your Inner Child
Just because everyone in the group is over 21 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wait in line to meet Goofy or clap your hands in the air during Move It! Shake It! Celebrateand Play It! street party. A trip to the theme parks is a perfect opportunity to be a kid again. Go for it!
