Overview of Oklahoma City Thunder
Originally established as the Seattle Supersonics in 1967, the team relocated to Oklahoma City, OK in 2008. The name "Thunder" was inspired by the city's location in Tornado Alley and the fact that it was home to the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division — the Thunderbirds. Currently, the team plays its home games at Paycom Center. The team qualified for its first playoff berth during the 2009-10 season. They went on to win their first division title as the Thunder in the 2010-11 season, then their first Western Conference championship one season later.
The OKC Thunder spent the 2022-23 season getting back into shape. Despite a foot injury for their second overall pick in the NBA Draft, Chet Holmgren, they finished the regular season with the 10th-best record in the Western Conference — qualifying for the play-in tournament. With second-year guard Josh Giddey and rookie Jalen Williams breaking out as scorers last season, the Thunder improved offensively and were fifth in points per game.
