Parks News: Springfield Comes to Universal; Penguins Make Friends with Humans at Antarctica

by Leap on May 31, 2013

It's time for the Frog Family's weekly roundup of Disney and Orlando theme park tidbits from the interwebs.

We love comments! Drop us a line below if you have something to share.

This week’s highlights:

  • krustySpringfield has come to Universal Orlando! Yes, the Simpsons’ hometown has been brought to life inside the park, and any day now, you’ll perhaps get to order your own Krusty Burger or knock back a Duff Beer inside Moe’s Tavern. A new ride is also coming -- Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl -- that will send guests on an intergalactic spin. While the official announcement on the newly themed area came only late last week, construction has been ongoing for some time, and Springfield is expected to open this summer alongside the existing Simpsons Ride. We snapped a few pics of the construction progress while we were at Universal Studios last week.

  • While Tad was a little bit disappointed that he did not get to ride Transformers last week, there were still some missing pieces, most notably Optimus Prime, who has took his rightful place atop the NEST building at Universal Studios this week.
  • For those of you who might have missed it in our lookahead for the parks in the month of June, we included the video Tad shot of Empire of the Penguin at SeaWorld.
  • penguin55Speaking of penguins, a few of the 250 feathered friends have landed on the guest side of the habitat in Antarctica. Not too worry, they have been gently returned to their new home!
  • It's been a tough week for the Frog Family as we've re-acclimated to real life after our Monstrous Summer All-Nighter at Magic Kingdom. We had a ton of fun in the park, and you can see a ton of the photos we took as well as video of the opening and closing events.

  • The Disney Parks Blog also put together its own nifty video showing 24 hours in the park (in just 90 seconds!) looking down from Main Street USA.

  • For those of you renting cars for your Orlando vacation, the governor of Florida approved a ban on texting while driving that takes effect Oct. 1.

  • 0522ZX_0075GD-532x800Just in time for summer, a new version of Celebrate the Magic debuts at Magic Kingdom. This projection show, which transforms Cinderella Castle, is a must-see!
  • Those of you who have been wondering about the release of Magic Bands, we’ve got an update of sorts. Disney Parks & Resorts chairman Tom Staggs shared a few more details about MyMagic+ at the All Things Digital D11 Conference, including that the bands would roll out at Disney World by the end of the year.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, happy planning!
