Overview of the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins are a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The team has won five Stanley Cup championships, including two back-to-back wins in 1991 and 1992, and again in 2016 and 2017! The Penguins (tied with the Edmonton Oilers) won the most Stanley Cup championships among the non-Original Six teams. The Penguins joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1967. Their arena looked like an Igloo, prompting the Penguins' name. (Perhaps they got their ideas of how penguins live by watching old "Chilly Willy" cartoons?) They played at "The Igloo" for 43 years.
The team's home games are now played at PPG Paints Arena. The indoor arena is also a great place to catch concerts with its state-of-the-art amenities and premium seating.
One of the most iconic figures in Penguins' history is one of its current players, Sidney Crosby. As the team's captain and a hockey superstar, Crosby has been the heart and soul of the Penguins. He, along with several past team members, has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. That includes co-owner Mario Lemieux.
The Penguins have a few major rivals, including the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, New York Islanders and Washington Capitals.
