Tampa Bay Rays Team Overview
As one of the current youngest teams in Major League Baseball (MLB), the team originated as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998, and has since played home games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL. Did you know that Tropicana Field is a domed stadium? You won't need to worry about being too hot or rained out. And there's an actual rays touch tank in the outfield!
The franchise's first decade was plagued with last-place seasons. With a fresh start and new look for the 2008 season, the team transformed into the Tampa Bay Rays and saw their first-ever winning season — even going all the way to the World Series. They haven’t looked back since, and continue to be a dominant team in the most competitive MLB division. The American League (AL) East is stacked with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.
Despite a short team history, the Tampa Bay Rays have won two AL pennants, four AL East division titles and four Wild Card berths. Aside from 2008, the Rays also appeared in the World Series in 2020, but are still seeking their first championship. Notable former Rays players include Evan Longoria, Carlos Peña, Carl Crawford, James Shields and Kevin Kiermaier. Currently, you can catch All-Stars Yandy Diaz, Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena in action for the Rays.
