When the FastPass Isn’t Fast Enough, Tad’s Tips: Volume1

by Tad on September 17, 2010

Whenever Lily and I are waiting in line with our mom at the supermarket, mall, or anywhere really, it's only a matter of time before one of us becomes impatient and throws a fit. I'll admit it, when I was younger I was known for turning the shopping cart into a jungle gym, and Lily is currently at that age when temper tantrums can come as fast the Rockin' Roller Coaster.

As you know, my family is a fun-loving, but sometimes impatient group of theme park junkies. So when our dad mentioned our upcoming Disney vacation, that familiar feeling of uncontrollable anticipation of getting on the next ride came over me. I knew right then and there I better come up with a back up plan for Lily and myself. I mean, really, what happens if the FastPass just isn't fast enough?

Counting Activities

  • Count Your Way to First: See how many times you can count to a chosen number before you are at the front of the line.
  • Find the Mickeys: See how many Mickey Mouse's you can find. You can look for them on people's clothing, on signs, or just randomly around your area.
  • Shoe Sort: Since we kids have a lower vantage point, we can sort the types of shoes people are wearing. Count how many people are wearing sneakers compared to how many are wearing sandals. Sorting by color also is an easy idea.

Word Games

  • Disney ABCs This is a challenging one...Think of a Disney word for each letter of the alphabet. When I tried to do this, it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be so here's some help in case you get stuck. Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Dumbo, Eeyore, Frontierland, Goofy, Hook, It's a Small World, Jungle Cruise, Kanga, Little John, Minnie Mouse, Nemo, Owl, Pluto, Quasimodo, Rafiki, Snow White, Tinker Bell, Uncle Remus, Vanessa, Winnie the Pooh, XR, Yar (dinosaur), Zeus
  • Disney Spelling Bee Have a Disney or vacation-themed spelling bee. You can stick with simple words for the younger kids like Lily such as Goofy, trip or plane. Try harder ones for the older kids like me such as pirate, luggage, jungle or country.

“If” questions always take up some time and are usually good for a giggle.

Ask conversation starters like:

  • If you could be any Disney character which one would you be?
  • If you were a Disney castmember, what job would you want to have?
  • If you had to live at any of the attractions, which one would it be? (Swiss Family Tree House is definitely my choice. Lily likes It's a Small World... it figures.
  • If you could change something about an attraction we've been on, how would you make it better?

Technical Assistance

My parents have the iPhone app from Undercover Tourist. They use it for things like checking the height requirements for rides (we are frogs, you know), remembering things like where we parked and figuring out where we are going to eat for lunch. But two things in particular are especially useful when it comes to the lines. The app displays the wait times for all the attractions and has a fun tile match game we kids can play.

Hopefully, these tips will help Lily and I stay out trouble the next time we're waiting in line!
