Jazz singer Dianne Reeves grew up surrounded by music, with her father being a singer and her mother playing trumpet, while her uncle is bassist Charles Burrell, and her cousin is George Duke. After being discovered as a singer, Reeves moved to Los Angeles, where she sang and recorded with Stanley Turrentine, Lenny White, Billy Childs and the band Caldera before moving to New York City for several years to tour with Harry Belafonte. Known as one of the top jazz singers of the late 1980s, Reeves is a skilled scat singer and pulls in multiple influences including African-inspired folk music.
