Rossini’s effervescent comedy opera retakes the stage with its buoyant good humor and elegant melodies once again. Following a famously disastrous opening night (caused by factions and local politics more than any reaction to the work itself), "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" has gone on to delight the diverse tastes of every generation for two centuries, being considered one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy set to music.
In Bartlett Sher’s madcap production, star mezzo-sopranos Isabel Leonard and Aigul Akhmetshina headline as the feisty heroine, Rosina. High-flying tenors Lawrence Brownlee and Jack Swanson (in his Met debut) portray Rosina's secret beloved, Count Almaviva. Baritones Davide Luciano and Andrey Zhilikhovsky star as the infamous barber and title character. Baritone Nicola Alaimo and bass-baritone Peter Kálmán play Dr. Bartolo and bass Alexander Vinogradov rounds out the main cast as Don Basilio. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts.
Run Time: Three (3) hours and 10 minutes, including one (1) intermission
Please Note: Prior to the April 19 performance, children and families are welcome to join the Met's Spring Open House, free to all ticketholders for the April 19 performance. Video cameras will be in operation during the May 27 and May 31 performances as part of the Met’s Live in HD series of cinema transmissions.
