Rapper, songwriter, producer and actor LL Cool J's breakthrough came with his 1985 single "I Need a Beat" and his platinum debut album, Radio, making him one of the first rappers to achieve commercial success. His follow-up album, Bigger and Deffer, sold over two million copies in the United States alone and spent 11 weeks at the top of the Billboard R&B albums chart. LL Cool J helped to pave the way for the gritty and minimalistic "golden age" of hip-hop with a rap-rock hybrid sound and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
