As you enter through the lobby of The Great Movie Ride, you’ll see rotating exhibits of costumes, props and set pieces like a pair of ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz and a carrousel horse from Mary Poppins. The next segment of the queue has you watching movie clips on a large screen. Some of the clips you’ll see are recreated during the ride inside.
From there, ushers will direct you toward large moving trams. (The trams actually split apart during the ride and depending on which one you are aboard, a gangster or a bandit will hijack the tram while your poor host/hostess is left behind.)
The ride itself is an entertaining journey that will put you in the middle of live-action recreations of gritty gangster flicks of the 1930s and the adventure of classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark. Throughout the ride, some of the most memorable moments in motion picture history are recreated using film footage, special effects and nearly 50 lifelike Audio-Animatronic replicas of legendary movie stars. (Scenes from the following movies are recreated: Alien, Casablanca, Fantasia, Mary Poppins, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Singin’ in the Rain, Tarzan the Ape Man, The Public Enemy and The Wizard of Oz.)
The final section of The Great Movie Ride treats guests to a sentimental montage of movie clips old and new.
The stand-by line for The Great Movie Ride is reasonably short. The duration of this attraction is commonly underestimated, so make sure to take into account the length of the ride in your schedule.
The scenery, movie clips and gunfire during this attraction can be scary for the little ones. Aside from that, we love it and the 20 minutes fly by! Tad insists on sitting next to the live host/hostess in the front of the tram so he can be right next to the action when the gangster or bandit takes over the ride.
The Great Movie Ride is located on Hollywood Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and lasts about 20 minutes. It’s appropriate for all ages, but several scenes (i.e. the gangster scene and the scene from Alien) can be very frightening for young children.
The ride vehicle has bench seating (with backs) and no lap restraints. Guests must transfer from their motorized scooter or ECV to an available wheelchair to experience the attraction.
