Famously (or infamously) known for the final scene's "Dance of the Seven Veils" the opera in one act "Salome" takes to the Met stage once again. The French play by Oscar Wilde takes on a new life in German as Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the story a Victorian-era setting that leans into the subtle elements of darkness and light while exploring the symbolism.
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances for Strauss’s white-hot tragedy, returning to the Met for its first new production at the company in 20 years. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever portraying the abused and unhinged antiheroine as she demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Joining them on the stage are Tenor Gerhard Siegel as Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. Starting in May, Derrick Inouye will take over conducting two performances.
Run Time: One (1) hour and 50 minutes, with no intermission
Please Note: video cameras will be in operation during the May 13 and May 17 performances as part of the Met’s Live in HD series of cinema transmissions.
