Kentucky-born country "outlaw" Sturgill Simpson is a singer-songer and actor known to mix in traditional country with psychedelic rock and elements of bluegrass. Noting Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson as influences and often compared to Waylon Jennings, Simpson’s career started in country rock band Sunday Valley from 2004 to 2012. His first two solo albums were released independently, the second of which earned him a Grammy and a No. 18 spot on Rolling Stone’s “50 Best Albums of 2014”. Simpson continues to be a dominating force in the country music arena, taking home more awards and accolades and sometimes touring and writing under his moniker Johnny Blue Skies.
