In the sweltering heat of a 1970s summer, the "The Hills of California" takes us not to sunny California but instead to Blackpool, a charming English seaside town. The Webb sisters are reunited as they return to their childhood home where their mother Veronica lies dying upstairs. Gloria and Ruby now have families of their own. Jill never left. And Joan? No one’s heard from her in twenty years. But Jill is sure that their mother’s favorite won’t let them down this time.
Bittersweet memories of amusement park rides and overdue bills haunt the run-down Sea View Guest House. Flashback to the 1950s, where their fiercely-loving single mother helps the girls rehearse their singing act. One day a record producer offers a shot at fame and a chance to escape that will inevitably cost them all dearly. “Hilarious and devastating, 'The Hills of California' will undoubtedly cement Jez Butterworth's reputation as our greatest living playwright.” (Vogue)
Following their triumphant production of "The Ferryman", Tony-winning playwright Jez Butterworth and Oscar® and Tony-winning director Sam Mendes reunite for "The Hills of California" at Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway.
