What we love
- Located in coveted Penn Quarter, directly across from the National Portrait Gallery and four blocks from the National Mall.
- Guests are walking the same halls as our founding fathers from centuries ago and tadpoles will love the five-foot-wide architectural medallion of a lion's head in every guest room which pays tribute to the magnificent friezes and motifs adorning many of DC's government buildings.
- Carefully curated bath amenities, luxe robes, and lush linens.
- The state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center, featuring Precor, has everything you need to get in a good workout.
- A 2016 renovation added thoughtful design touches and furnishings including a classical European palette, Greek trim details, and elements pulling inspiration from the Corinthian column, nearby Union Station, and elegant powder rooms of the past.
- History buffs will be happy to know the exterior of the building was fully restored to its original glory, all original room and corridor configurations were retained inside, and the renovation kept the original marble and cast iron circular stairways, ornamental plaster and cast iron ceilings, cast iron and stone door and window trim, original window frames and sashes, and marble floors.
- Pets are recognized as part of the family at Kimpton and a water bowl will be delivered to your room along with courtesy doggie bags for walks.
Keep in Mind
- Pet-friendly – no fees or size restrictions! If they fit in the elevator, they can come!
- There is a limited number of connecting rooms available; be sure to include that in your special request if booking multiple rooms.
- There is no pool at this property, but frogs can get their water time at the nearby Key Bridge Boathouse or The Yards Park (both roughly 15 minutes away).
Notable Facts
- The current hotel building was erected to house the General Post Office and was constructed in two sections over a 27-year period.
- Robert Mills, who went on to design the Washington Monument, designed the original section (there’s a commemorative bronze plaque along the 7th Street side of the building near F Street).
- The building has served as the General Post Office, a munitions depot in the Civil War, the General Land Office, the Bureau of Education, one of the government's first central power, heating, and lighting plants, headquarters for the National Selective Service Board, and the Tariff Commission (which became known as the United States International Trade Commission Building).
- It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
- The building was left vacated and abandoned in 1997 until it reopened as the Kimpton Hotel Monaco DC in June 2002.
- The Paris Ballroom is the former library created for the Postmaster General and the Athens Room was once the official “Hearing Room” for the International Trade Commission.
Frog Family Tips
- Start your mornings right with complimentary coffee or tea after utilizing the provided in-room yoga mat to find your center.
- Hop down to the front desk to rent complimentary custom-designed Kimpton PUBLIC bikes to cruise the city in style.
- Unwind from a busy day of sightseeing at the daily evening wine social.
- If your frog family pet couldn’t make the trip or you’d like some additional company, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco front desk staff can lend one of their goldfish to you during your stay.
