Those of you coming off of the long holiday weekend might have missed big news from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs, who provided the very first renderings and more details about the AVATAR-inspired land based off of the James Cameron film that is planned for Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Staggs, who announced the details at the D23 Expo in Japan, confirmed a target opening of 2017 for Pandora, which will be the largest expansion in Animal Kingdom's history. Imagineers envision this new land as a place for guests to see, hear and touch.
From the Disney Parks Blog: "As these concept renderings show in epic scale, in the world of AVATAR guests will encounter awe-inspiring floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound. Guests will also discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee."
Yes, you read that right -- guests will get to ride a Banshee! Staggs describes it as "an 'E-ticket' attraction unlike any our guests have ever experienced."
And more changes will be coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom, which closes before sundown. The park will be adding new entertainment experiences, including a nighttime spectacular featuring live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery.
There will also be live performers on Discovery Island and a nighttime version of the Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Walt Disney imagineering are working in collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron to bring to life the mythical world of Pandora, and we can think of no better park than Disney's Animal Kingdom with its lush, tropical, jungle-like setting!
