Your Sweet and Savory Guide to the Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm

by Mommy Frog on March 21, 2022 4 Los Angeles

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - PinterestSpringtime is one of the most beautiful times to visit Knott's Berry Farm. Flowers are in bloom, bunnies are about — look for bunnies, lambs and giant easter eggs in Camp Snoopy — and we get to dig in to delicious dishes. Every year, foodies and Knott's Berry Farm fans flock to the Boysenberry Festival for savory and sweet foods and treats that are flavored by this versatile berry.

Why a whole festival to celebrate a little berry? Besides being delicious, the boysenberry put Knott's Berry Farm on the map. Walter Knott was the first person to commercially cultivate the boysenberry, selling the berries at his farm stand in 1932. People kept returning to the stand for the tasty berries. He named them boysenberries, after their originator, Charles Rudolph Boysen. Boysen successfully bred a cross between a blackberry, a raspberry and a loganberry. The result is a large, juicy and delicious berry.

Today, Knott's Berry Farm is a hoppening Western-themed theme park that is rich in history. The Boysenberry Festival connects the park we know today with its farm stand beginnings. The incredible flavor of the boysenberry can be used in a variety of dishes. Each year, the Knott’s Culinary Team creates new dishes that incorporate the berry in new and delicious ways. The result? A unique assortment of food, desserts and boysenberry-infused beverages. Oh, but that is not all! Beyond food, the Boysenberry Festival is a bushel of fun with musical entertainment, a craft fair, games, craft beer tasting, wine tasting and more.

2022 Boysenberry Festival Dates

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Sign and Flowers

The full Boysenberry Festival is back in 2022! It takes place daily from March 18 through April 24, 2022, which is a week longer than in years past if you are keeping score. The daily event offers fresh fun from open to close. You can enjoy live entertainment, live music around the park, local crafts and activities the whole family can enjoy. And FOOD — don't froget about all the yummy boysenberry-inspired dishes and treats. You can learn more about the history of the boysenberry at Town Hall during the festival.

You'll need theme park admission (season 2) to enter the park and enjoy entertainment. Food and beverage are extra costs. You can also purchase an optional tasting card to try foods from the festival booths.

Boysenberry Festival Food and Beverage

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Tasting card by Ghost Town entrance

The Boysenberry Festival is one of our favorite Knott's Berry Farm events because of all the yummy things to eat and drink. This year, there are over two dozen new items to try!

This year, the tasting card returns. For $50 ($45 for season pass holders) you get up to six tastings from nine themed food booths. Along with food, you can also use the tasting card to get boysenberry beer, wine, sangria, seltzer, mudslides or hard cider, as well as nonalcoholic beverages.

Here's a look at the booths and their menus (these items are not on the dining plans). We note the items that have vegan substitutions — plus signage at the stand usually mentions any available substitutions). Some of the booths are actual booths, and some are restaurants that are acting as booths. You can purchase items individually or use the tasting card. To view all the Boysenberry Festival offerings and see the food locations on a map, you can scan the QR code on the back of the tasting card or follow this link.

Foods Outside the Park

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Monster Pulled Pork

Look for special items outside of the park at Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant (Monster Boysenberry Pulled Pork and Slaw Sandwich — feeds six to eight) and the Cable Car Kitchen (Deep-Fried Cookie with Boysenberry Sauce, Funnel Cake and Ice Cream — feeds six to eight).

We ordered the Monster Boysenberry Pulled Pork Sandwich. Oh my, this meal is HUGE! It started out with a dozen rolls with butter and apricot jam, and then we had two bowls of soup and two salads to share. Then the main dish comes out on a board. It's a giant sandwich with a mound of fries. Pictures cannot correctly show the size. This monstrosity has boysenberry pulled pork and slaw. It comes with a knife to cut it up. It's topped with onion rings and a slab of ribs. When a slab of ribs is your garnish, you know you are talking about a meal fit for Bigfoot. To top it off, we received slices of boysenberry pie as dessert (apple pie was also an option)!

The Frog Family was proud to learn that we were the first guests to order this festival spectacle and people kept asking us what we were eating. Even other servers came by for a look! We did not see this item on the menu and were guessing at what we thought the bill would be before it arrived. That's the most fun part of all! The huge meal came in with a small price tag of $55 total. For a four-course meal that could feed six to eight hungry people, we felt like it was a good bargain. We've paid $100 for a sandwich at other theme parks that did not come close to this amount of food.

Craft Beer Tasting

You can taste beers infused with fruity sweet and tart berries or an original boysenberry seltzer. Get a Boysenberry Craft Beer tasting card. You can purchase it at Wilderness Dance Hall. It includes five tastings and a commemorative cup. You can also purchase items individually.

Shopping at Knott's Boysenberry Festival

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Boysenberry Merch

In addition to tasty bites, you can do some shopping at the festival. Knott’s retail shops are open, along with 30 local artisan craft booths, selling their own boysenberry-themed items. You can also see some of the Knott's Calico Ghost Town residents creating their wares.

You can purchase original art that celebrates Knott's Berry Farm history, created by over 35 local artisans. You can find it at the "Tied Up in Knott's" exhibit at The Factory Store.

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Mudslide Plants

Love the boysenberry? You can grow your own at home! Boysenberry plants are available for purchase. Plants are $24.99, plus tax. You'll find the plants at Boysenberry Lane. This hidden area has drinks, food, a game, Whittles meet and greets and extra tables. You can find it just past the GhostRider exit. We asked about the boysenberry plant's yield and when boysenberries are ripe. They ripen in January and each plant, if properly cared for, can produce about 50 berries.

Characters and Games

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Whittles Meet and Greet

Characters are out to greet guests at the event — get on in and hug your beloved PEANUTS characters. We caught sight of the Snoopy and Pig Pen in Camp Snoopy. They told us the Easter Beagle may appear in April. Whittles is at Boysenberry Lane. From the look of his beard, he has been thoroughly enjoying all of the boysenberry treats! You can meet Boysen Bear or Crafty Coyote near Charleston Circle.

Boysenberry Festival at Knott's Berry Farm - Pie-Eating Contest

Head to the Calico Mine Stage for crazy and messy games, including a boysenberry pie eating contest! You can see the schedule of activities near the stage.

Only six people can participate in the pie-eating contest. You can sign up about 15 minutes ahead of time. Both adults and kids can compete. You'll put your name in a hat and they'll call up the six contestants as they pull the names out. Also, Ghost Town is where you'll find Mrs. Knott's Cookie Decorating.

Do you know if they have all vendors serving all the boysenberry treats everyday of the festival? Just wondering if certain items may not be available on weekdays
