Distance: About 13 miles (20–25 minutes)

Location: Santa Ana, CA

If convenience is your top priority, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana is tough to beat. It’s only about 13 miles from Disneyland and a quick 15–25-minute drive. SNA is small, calm and easy to navigate, which makes it a favorite for families and anyone who wants to skip the airport chaos. You’ll find flights from major airlines like Southwest, Delta, United, American and Alaska.

Because it’s smaller, SNA can sometimes have higher fares or fewer direct flights than LAX, but the trade-off is a smoother arrival. You’ll likely be checking in at your hotel while travelers from Los Angeles are still sitting on the freeway.

Long Beach Airport is another small and friendly option about 22 miles from Disneyland. The open-air terminals and breezy SoCal vibe make it feel like part of your vacation from the moment you land. Our froggy family love using this airport and our friends always rave about it. Walking down the steps or ramp of a plane outside is such a fun experience! Sometimes they load and unload the plane from the front and back, which is so efficient. Plus, the rental cars and parking are just across the street from baggage claim. It can't be easier to get from the plane to your car.

You won’t find as many flights as you would at a larger airport, but if your route fits, LGB offers a relaxed start to your Disneyland trip. Short lines, easy navigation and minimal stress can make the scheduling work worth it.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Distance: About 34 miles (40–60 minutes, sometimes more with traffic)

Location: Los Angeles, CA

LAX is the biggest airport in Southern California, and with that comes both perks and pitfalls. It’s about 34 miles from Disneyland, though depending on traffic, that drive can take anywhere from 45 minutes to well over an hour.

The upside is that you’ll find tons of flights, especially if you’re traveling internationally or hunting for a deal. The downside? It’s busy. Really busy. If you’re flying into LAX, plan for crowds, long walks between terminals and heavy traffic once you hit the road. Still, it’s a solid option if you need flexibility or lower fares.

This one can be a bit tricky. For travel between LAX and Disneyland, we often use a ride-share app, such as Uber or Lyft. While it can be expensive, you are paying for just the single ride and not per person. The downside of ride-share is the pickup location. The apps are not able to pick up passengers at the terminal. Travelers must board a shuttle bus (or walk) to the pickup area called “LAXit” (pronounced “L.A. Exit”). (In 2026, a people mover to the pickup area and rental cars will open.) You must be in the LAXit area in order to request a ride.

While you do have the option of taking the Metro bus and rail lines, there are a few switches and it can be a little confusing. Especially for a first-timer and with luggage. Private shuttles and limousines are available, and can pick-up right outside the terminal (unlike with ride-share apps).

You can rent a car, as getting around by car is the most popular way to go in Southern California. You can rent cars through Undercover Tourist. If you bundle your rental car with hotel or ticket purchases in your cart, you may get an even bigger rental car discount!

Pros:

  • Tons of domestic and international flights
  • Often the most affordable airfare
  • Many transportation options, including shuttles and rideshares

Cons:

  • Heavy traffic can double travel time
  • Long lines and crowds
