Everything You Need to Know about Getting Engaged at Disney World (Part I)

by Ashley Metz on April 26, 2016
20 Orlando

I have big news!!! I have a fiancé! That's right, this girl is off the market and on to planning my own magical day! I always dreamt of my Disney engagement. You see, LONG before I met The One, I wished and hoped to get engaged at Disney World. The romance and magic of it all made me long for a Disney World proposal! Would it be in front of the castle, on a long walk around World Showcase, in a private corner of Main Street USA? How would he do it? What would my reaction be? Well, let me tell you, all of my dreaming and planning did me absolutely no good, whatsoever.

Ashley Engaged at Disney World - Proposal in Front of Cinderella Castle

When he got down on one knee, I was stupefied. I couldn't speak. Seriously, aside from saying, "What are you doing, babe?" all I could do was kiss and kiss him. My sweet prince arranged the most magical and memorable Disney World proposal. He called ahead, had a plan and made it a time I will never, ever forget! For the next two posts, we are looking at creating and celebrating the PERFECT Disney World proposal.

1. Get a game plan

A plan is where it's at. Now, as my sweet fiancé will tell you, even the best laid can fail, so do like he did, create a plan B ... and C. For my Disney World proposal, my fiancé had decided to propose in front of "our spot" of the castle. It's a spot where we are always sure to snap a picture; located near Sleepy Hollow at Liberty Square, you are almost ALWAYS guaranteed to have a PhotoPass Photographer ... that is unless you're hauling around a little black box with an engagement ring and a stomach full of butterflies. No worries here. Plan B worked just as well.

Make a plan for what you're ideal proposal would be; think location, time of day and plan of attack ... where will you hide the ring until the right moment? A great suggestion is to call Disney and let them know what you're planning. Cast members will be delighted to give you suggestions and ideas. You can go super fancy and get tips, suggestions and even make reservations for engagement experiences on the Disney Fairytale Weddings Site.

2. Capture the moment

Getting Engaged at Disney World

I cannot stress to you how important it is to capture your engagment. Everything is a surreal and a blur—thankfully, my fiance's parents had the idea to purchase Memory Maker for us. Right before he got down on one knee, he somehow managed to lean into the photographer and let her know he was about to pop the question and she should keep clicking.

Our PhotoPass photographer was more than excited to share in our moment and we got some amazing shots to remember it by! I'm so thankful that we had this option. I highly recommend Memory Maker, because the sheer volume of pictures I wanted featuring my new ring doubled my normal PhotoPass usage (yeah, never though I'd be that girl).

3. Let everyone know

Getting Engaged at Disney World

You can't keep your Disney World engagement a secret. You've got to get pins and let the world know! My man ordered custom Up! (my favorite movie) pins that said "Just Engaged" for us to wear around the parks. Disney cast members will make you feel so loved, and the other amazing guests will do the same. We had so many well wishes and congratulations, the excitement sent us over the moon. Let everyone know and you'll be sure to celebrate the magic of your love!

4. Celebrate

Getting Engaged at Disney World

Hooray! You're engaged!!! Now it's time to CELEBRATE!!! In my next post I'm going to break down my top tips for celebrating your engagement in the parks!

Good Morning,

I'm from Panama and I am planning to make a trip to Disney at May and propose to my girlfriend. Maybe in Narcoosses or something like that. I have a lot of questions, but I will try to make it short.

1. My girlfriend is ver shy, so i need ideas of places not so crowded to make the proposal. (i need your expert knowledge)

2. I'm on budget, so i was thinking staying outside Disney and rent a car. I was looking and you have the best prices at room hotel, how does it work ? I make a reservation (like in Booking) or do i have to pay directly to you or at the hotel ?

I was looking for your live chat option but it seems you don't have it anymore.

Thanks for all the help and tips you can have.

Hey Gian, I just happened to stumble across your comment. Does your girlfriend like animals? If so- I HIGHLY suggest the Savour the Savana Evening Private Safari experience. It's around $150 a person, but you'll get some chances to be alone while there and the group you go with is anywhere from 2-12 people. You get a private safari ride at Animal Kingdom with an animal educator, incredible food, and some great photo opportunities. Plus, the educators are there to help just in case you need to set something up. Best of luck!

Hi,

Do you know if besides Disney weddings web site, there is other company that can support and help with logistics for a marriage proposal over MK?

I was wondering what all I could do for my proposal? My girlfriend really loves Beauty and the Beast but she also loves all the princess's. I really want to do something super special for her and make it something she cant even dream of. I am going in late September and the first week of October and have Mickeys Not so Scary Halloween Party tickets. Is there anything special I could have done since it is a special event. My original plans were to eat at be our guest and meet with belle and the beast but that day we are going they are not open late because of the special event and so i could not get RSVP. If I cant get something like that, I would love to be able to do it while meeting cinderella or have a special desert dine in or something. I just want it as special as i can get it for her, just dont really no who to ask.

Planning is key. I had bought a Cinderella tiara for sweetest day. She ran in the Disney Wine & Dine half marathon. Plan A was to propose at the finish line but it rained in 2014 all night during this. Plan B was to propose in front of Cinderella's Castle in front of the Partner's Statue. This could not have worked better. I gave a gopro to the PhotoPass person. I had the remote to turn it on and off. I turned it on and told her how I wanted her to be my partner and she was my princess. It was priceless as she was wearing the tiara as well. This was the fairytale and it was real life. Still amazing to this day and created a forever memory. The fireworks followed and made the night unforgettable.

Congrats! I was lucky enough that "Plan A" worked out well... I knew my wife always wanted to do a carriage ride. So, I worked it out and did the private carriage ride at Fort Wilderness, and had the "glass slipper on a bed of white flowers" delivered there ahead of time (directly to the carriage), so she never knew. Was even able to sneak my camera to the driver before the ride so she could capture the moment as it happened. We She was a great cast member who about 1/2 way through the carriage ride, stopped and brought the slipper over for me to propose. Next morning we took it to MK and a photopass person took a lot of the classic photos in front of the castle as well.

We celebrate our anniversary at a park each year now (last year at Disneyland; this year back at Disney World).

The cast members are always so nice and go above and beyond to make it a special experience.

(Oh, and yes, the slipper was what was used as our "engagement piece", as I knew we would want to make custom rings upon our return... which we did, and both hers and mine have diamond Mickey heads and the "...and they lived happily ever after" inscription... yes, Disney is just that important to us

got to agree with having back up plans. I ended up on a bout Plan F after prolonged rain and a lack of photopass photographers ended up meaning I proposed about 5 hour later than I had intended.
