Disney World Park Pass Reservations No Longer Required for Date-Based Tickets

Inside This Post Inside This Post

After a temporary closure in 2020 due to COVID-19, Walt Disney World Resort reopened its theme parks with new procedures in place, including a park reservation system to manage daily attendance. As of Jan. 9, 2024, theme park reservations are no longer required for date-based tickets (the most common admission type), plus park hopping is once again available all day! Certain types of admission may still require a park reservation. Here's everything you need to know about Disney Park Pass reservations, if you still need to make them.

Spaceship Earth at sunset

All of the Details on Disney World's Theme Park Reservation System

For select ticket types, you still need valid admission and a Disney Park Pass reservation for the same park on the same day. (Prior to Jan. 9, 2024, this was required for all guests). If you're looking to park hop, you'll only need to make a Disney Park Pass reservation for the first park you will be visiting. This post will walk you through all of the specifics so you can reserve your spot at Walt Disney World Resort!

Who Needs to Make Disney Park Pass Reservations?

Disney Park Pass Reservations

As of Jan. 9, 2024, theme park reservations are no longer required for date-based tickets. This is the standard ticket most people purchase that requires you to choose a start date. Reservations are still required for student group tickets, convention tickets and all other admission types, such as Annual Passes and Cast Members. So for most of you reading this, that means you don't have to make a park pass reservation anymore!

While Walt Disney World Annual Passholders must still make reservations, they do not need to book a theme park reservation to visit the parks after 2 p.m. There is one exception, though! Reservations will still need to be made for Magic Kingdom Park on Saturdays and Sundays (regardless of the time of day you visit). Pass blockout dates will continue to apply. This allows more flexibility for locals to make spontaneous evening visits. This year, passholders also have select "good-to-go days" where they will be able to visit the theme parks before 2 p.m. without a reservation.

Get excited park hoppers as all-day park hopping is back! Four parks in one day, here we come.

What to Know Before You Make Your Disney World Reservation

Disney Park Pass - Tree of Life

Before you make your Disney World reservation, there are a few important things to remember:

  • Reservations are not required for all date-based tickets, including 1-day tickets, multi-day tickets and vacation packages with date-based tickets.
  • If your ticket or pass requires park reservations, they must be made for each day of entry. If you have a multi-day ticket, you must make a park reservation for each day of your visit.
  • Reservations are limited and subject to availability, and not guaranteed until a reservation is finalized.
  • If your ticket or pass includes the Park Hopper option, you will only need a Disney Park Pass reservation for the first park you wish to enter. Once you've entered the first park for the day, you can hop to another any time. More on this below!
  • If you have previously linked your theme park tickets or hotel information in My Disney Experience, we recommend that you log in and double-check that the information looks correct in the system.
  • If you have not already linked your hotel reservation or tickets in My Disney Experience, you'll want to make sure they are linked ASAP. They are required before you can make a reservation in the new system.
  • Annual passholders without a hotel reservation are limited to a set number of park passes at a time (depending on the level of their pass). Once you use a park pass, you may obtain a new one.
  • Guests ages 2 and under do not need a Park Pass.
  • You can view a Disney Park Pass Availability calendar here.
  • If you are looking to reserve in-park dining, you will also need a Disney Park Pass reservation for the same park, on the same day; a dining reservation does not guarantee you entry to the park. (If, for example, you'd like to dine at Hollywood & Vine at Disney's Hollywood Studios, you'd also need a valid ticket and Disney Park Pass, all for the same day as your dining reservation.) Dining reservations can be made 60 days in advance. If you're planning to park hop to your dining reservation, note that it still does not guarantee you entry into the park — and that you won't need a Disney Park Pass to enter.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Disney Park Pass System

1. Register or Sign in to StartYourDisneyExperience.com and Link Your Admission

If you haven't already, you will need to register for an account at StartYourDisneyExperience.com and then link your park admission. (If you've already linked your tickets in My Disney Experience, you'll just need to log in to My Disney Experience, press the plus sign and navigate to Make or Modify Park Reservations.) Press "Make Theme Park Reservation." If you're using the app, you may be prompted to log in on a browser.

2. Create Your Party

Then, you'll be prompted to create your travel party based on eligible tickets. Check those in your group you'd like to make a reservation for.

3. Select a Date and Park

Choose the date and the theme park that you'd like to visit.

4. Review and Confirm Your Plans

That's it! You'll be able to see your Park Passes in My Plans in My Disney Experience at any time.

5. Need to Cancel a Reservation?

It's easy-peasy to cancel a reservation if your plans change. All you have to do is view the specific pass under My Plans in My Disney Experience and click on View Details. There will be an option that says Cancel This Reservation. What if you don't want to cancel the reservation for everyone? No problem! Before you confirm the cancellation, it will ask you to select the guests that you wish to remove from the Park Pass reservation.

How Does Park Hopping Work with the Disney Park Pass Reservation System?

All-day park hopping is back! As of Jan. 9, 2024, you may park hop as early as you want (for many years, park hopping began at 2 p.m.). If your ticket still requires park reservations, you must make a Disney Park Pass reservation for the first park you plan to visit and enter that first park prior to visiting another. A park reservation is not required after the first park.

Well, there you have it, everything to know about the Disney Park Pass reservation system. Let us know any questions you may have in the comments below!

Hi, we have bought tickets for 2022 as we knew we had to reserve park dates. Can we book a park visit and go to visit in the morning, go back to the (non-Disney) hotel and then go back to the same reserved park in the afternoon? Or does the reservation end as soon as you leave the park?

Hi Nicole!

Tickets are available at the gate, but since Park Passes are required, you run the risk of not being able to enter due to capacity limits - if you're able, we definitely recommend purchasing in advance and reserving your spot as soon as possible :)

I am planning my Honeymoon for December in Disneyworld. I am concerned with WHEN i should begin reserving the parks. I wouldnt want to reserve a park and then realize, oh the hours are shorter that day than this day, etc. How far in advance should i reserve? I know December is a busy month.

Hi Dominique,

First of all, congratulations! That will surely be one magical honeymoon. :)

We frogs never think it's too early to reserve! Right now, there's open availability in December, so you can take your pick if you've already gotten your tickets. It's better to secure them as soon as you figure out your plans - and then change them later on, if necessary. For park hours, we can only see about two months in advance (today, I can see as far as June 21, 2021). However, some parks currently do not have availability through June 30, 2021. So there would be a risk with waiting until you find out the park hours, especially since the second half of December is particularly busy. Hope this helps!

Hi Angie!

E-tickets are delivered within 24 hours, while mailed tickets within the United States can take up to 10 business days for standard shipping, or 1-5 for Express Shipping. As soon as you have your confirmation number for your e-ticket, you can link your tickets in My Disney Experience to make your Park Pass reservations. For physical tickets, you will receive an email with your ticket number at a later date, which can then be used to make Park Pass reservations. Hi Amy!

The Park Pass reservations are made using My Disney Experience (since it's tied to your tickets), so if you are all connected as Family and Friends on the app, one person can make a reservation for the group (you'd just select your whole party when making the reservation, which the app will prompt you to do); otherwise, you'll each need to individually reserve in your own My Disney Experience accounts. As long as everyone has a valid Park Pass for the park you'll be visiting, you won't have any issues! Hope this helps!

Hi Holly!

It is definitely not a simple process - we're hoppy to help! If you don't have a park hopper ticket, you need both a Disney Park Pass and a valid dining reservation for the same park, on the same day (that is, if you have a one-day base ticket to EPCOT, but want to dine at Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom, your dining reservation alone doesn't guarantee you entry). However, with park hopping's return, you only need a Disney Park Pass for the first park you'll be hopping to - so if you wanted to hit Magic Kingdom in the morning then hop over to EPCOT with your park hopper ticket, you'd only need a Disney Park Pass for Magic Kingdom (and could make an ADR for an EPCOT restaurant without issue, or the need for a Park Pass for EPCOT!). The downside to park hopping currently is that you aren't guaranteed entry to that second park, as capacity limits are still in place - so there is a slim chance that the park you're hopping to could hit capacity and you may not make your dinner reservation as planned. Hope this helps!

So I am reading this and my only concern is the park reservation and dining reservation.

We love to start at one of the other parks then end with dinner at Epcot (I am sure we are not the only ones)

So we would be making a park reservation at our first park. Then reading this it sounds like we would not be able to make a reservation at Epcot as our second park.. correct?

Hi Holly!

Yes, that's correct - at this time, you only make a reservation for your first park. At 2 p.m., if you have a park hopper ticket or an AP, you can then hop to another park, pending capacity limits, without needing a reservation for the second park. We're hoping to have more information soon to be able to best advise you on how to make scenarios just like this work in terms of potential park capacity limits, ADRs, etc. We'll keep you posted as we learn more!

How far in advance would you recommend making a reservation for a park? We’re planning on going in the middle of November. If I wait until the end of October will they still have availability? With everything changing daily I don’t want to buy park tickets if my plans suddenly get cancelled and then have to fight for a refund. Thank you so much!

Hi Danny!

We'd recommend making a Park Pass reservation as soon as your plans are firmed up - while reservations have been pretty flexible to date, things are starting to pick up (in fact, there are a few dates in October with no availability at this time). The sooner, the better :)

Hi Lucila!

There sure is - hop here and you can see which parks are available on which dates (it's also broken down by resort guests, ticket holders and Annual Passholders, so be sure to select the option most applicable to you!). Hope this helps!

Hi Marcelle!

FastPass is not currently in use. Finding Nemo, Festival of the Lion King and UP! A Great Bird Adventure are not currently running. However, It's Tough to Be a Bug and Feathered Friends in Flight are both showing at this time at Animal Kingdom. Hope this helps!

Hi Marcelle!

Our Mailed Tickets have a 90-Day Return Policy - 95% of the item(s) order amount will be refunded back to you (the 5% fee will cover the delivery, handling and the processing fees associated with accepting payment and fulfilling the order). In order to be eligible for a refund, tickets must have been purchased within the last 90 days and not gone past the start date selected. They cannot have been modified by Disney Guest Services or through My Disney Experience (i.e., opted for an upgrade or changed the ticket type) or been activated by entering the park. Expired tickets, or any ticket not currently sold on this site are non-refundable. E-tickets, however, are nonrefundable (though we can often help with options for future use). Let us know if we can help with any additional questions, or feel free to give us a call at 1 (800) 846-1302!

We have a trip planned to Disney for Fall break next month and would like to do 9 days of parks. The max our reservation would allow is 7 days. I know for 2020 they aren't letting you book any more than that. Customer service told me that we could purchase a separate 2 day park pass but that is a rip because instead of it being $10 per person per day more that is more like $100 per person per day more. In the past we have just added extra days after we got to the parks. Has anyone had any trouble adding extra days since the parks reopened and they have the ticket restrictions in place?

Hi John!

As long as the parks you'd like to visit have Park Pass availability, you are able to change your Park Passes to those new dates!

I see that you mention that linking tickets purchased from undercover tourist doesn’t void the return policy, but what about booking a reservation for a park? If plans were to change, is a refund still available?

Hi Danielle!

As long as the ticket remains wholly unused, adding/canceling a Disney Park Pass (and linking to My Disney Experience, as you mentioned) will not void the return policy on the ticket. If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call at 1 (800) 846-1302!

We are going to DW on 9/20/20 and have reserved a park for each of the 6 days we'll be there. Is it possible to change the park we want to go to during our stay? For instance, if we had originally planned to to to MK on Wednesday and then Tuesday night or Wednesday morning (before going to the park) we decide to go to HS instead, can we change our reservation assuming there's availability?

Yes, as long as there's availability, you can certainly change your Park Pass and head to a different park. Have a great time!

Bought a four day hopper pass with an extra day back in Jan 2020 before the park shut down. Is it possible to get a refund for the difference from the hopper to the one park a day pass thru you, or can i go to the customer relations desk at the park and get maybe a gift card for the difference.

Hi Jason!

You'll need to call the Disney Reservation Center at 407-566-4985 and ask for the park hopper refund. You will need to ask for the refund before you activate (by entering the parks) the tickets. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to our customer service team ([email protected]). Thank you!

I have 4 day park pass and want to go to Hollywood Studios two of our 4 days. The system will not let me reserve more than one day in HS. Is this a new restriction? Is this a glitch?

Reply

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Katherine!

We'd suggest checking the availability calendar, because it's possible that Hollywood Studios is full on the day you're receiving the error for. If that IS the case, you can continue to check to see if any availability opens up for Hollywood Studios (while making a separate park reservation for a different park in the meantime - switching is toadally permissible). If that does not seem to be the case, we'd suggest giving Guest Relations a call at (407) 566-4985. They may be able to help :) Outside of limited availability at the parks, there is no restriction on holding more than one Park Pass for the same park. Hope this helps! Crossing our froggy fingers for you!

Hi Jenn!

We actually have been recommending that folks hop to the parks a little later to let the parking traffic ease a bit :) If you have a valid Park Pass for the day, you are counted in that day's park capacity and should not have trouble entering. (The Park Pass system is how Disney is limiting capacity, only releasing as many reservations in a day as capacity will allow.) Have fun!

Is it possible to get a reservation at one park (MK for example), spend a few hours there and then leave. Then (assuming there is availability) get a reservation for Epcot (since they are open later)? We have annual passes...

Hi Kim!

Not at this time, unfortunately. Your Park Pass grants you entry to one park per day for now (no park hopping just yet). You can, however, leave and re-enter the park your Park Pass is valid at (so enter MK, leave for a nap, and hop back to MK!).

How does the time slot in the reservation work? Do entrance times fill up for the park? We are making last minute plans and worry about buying tickets and not being able to enter the park as early as we want.

Hi Mike!

As of right now, the timeslot in the reservation system is just the park's operating hours; you are free to enter the park whenever you'd like between those timeframes (open to close). If that changes, we'll be sure to update this guide (and let you know!).

You reference the "My Disney Experience" in the comments below multiple times. Is this exclusive to WDW, or will Disneyland/CA Adv also use this portal? While I know the CA parks do not have a set date to open, if I need to set up a new account, I want to be ahead of the game! Or, will the CA parks still use the regular Disney accounts? Thanks so much for all of your time and your great, site and blog!

Hi Alison!

We don't know just yet how Disneyland Resort will handle their reservation system, unfortunately. What we do know is that in the past, Disneyland has stuck to the Disneyland app for app-related reservations (FASTPASS, dining and experiences). My Disney Experience is technically part of the Disney World app. We'll update as soon as we know more about how to make your Disneyland Park Pass so that you're toadally ready!

We have not purchased tickets yet and there is only one day we can go, 18th August 2020. Can we buy a park only ticket for this specific date yet? I can't find a way. We can buy a magic ticket and then try and make a reservation for that day, but if the are no places left it seems we will have useless tickets with no refunds. I've tried ringing Disney but have been on hold for too long.
