"Hamilton: An American Musical" became a pop culture phenomenon almost overnight in the 2010s and is still captivating and inspiring audiences today. The musical premiered off-Broadway on Feb. 17, 2015, at the Public Theater. The show won eight Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. "Hamilton" then moved to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug. 6, 2015. The rest is history. The show blew up in popularity, especially with young audiences and critics. "Hamilton" received a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations and won 11 awards (including Best Musical). The show received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Chances are you want to see this award-winning show. It will certainly win you points with your teens and tweens if you get Hamilton Broadway tickets either in New York or when it comes to town. Hamilton tickets make a great gift! Currently, you can get $99 orchestra seats (fees included) for select performances through Oct. 6, 2024, when purchased by Aug. 9, 2024, through Undercover Tourist.
Keep in mind that you'll hear adult language and see adult situations if you are bringing the tadpoles, but if you've listened to the soundtrack, you probably already know that going in. One of the big takeaways you can discuss with the family is that these historical Founding Fathers may have done great things, but they are also human and made some bad mistakes as well.
Our Top Reasons to Buy Hamilton Broadway Tickets
Whether you are heading to New York or want to see the show when it comes to the city near you, here are four reasons to get Hamilton Broadway tickets.
1. A lesson in history and diversity
"History has its eyes on you ..." If you're new to finding out about "Hamilton," you should know that it's the perfect way to introduce a cast of historical figures and events during the American Revolution in a way that will captivate your teens and tweens (and you) with contemporary music and dancing. It really puts faces to the Founding Fathers of the United States and helps people of all ages connect to the people and issues of the late 1700s. The musical styles represented include rap, R&B, soul, hip-hop and even jazz.
"Hamilton" casts people of all races and colors in roles of historical figures that were white. The show casts the best rappers based on their abilities, not on the color of their skin. And in doing that, "Hamilton" changed the way many live shows now cast their characters. So the play is making history in modern times while opening the minds of its audiences, allowing them to look into the essence of a character (not based on appearances). Plus, it really adds weight to some of the issues addressed in the show.
2. Nothing compares to seeing it live
If seeing Hamilton is among "a million things you haven't done," it's time to cross getting Hamilton Broadway tickets off your bucket list. Disney+ released the filmed version of the Broadway production in 2020, bringing the show to a wider audience. But having seen the show live twice and the filmed version, there is no comparison to seeing it performed live. You do not realize all the things hoppening on stage off camera. And the lighting coordinates with the sound in a really amazing way. And you just might be able to get the cast to sign your Playbill after the show if they come out. Plus, it's energizing to be part of an audience that is reacting to the show and the actors.
3. Pricing and availability are better than ever
When the show first hit Broadway, the seats were nearly impossible to get for a few years. I remember Mommy Frog trying to get "Hamilton" tickets when even the traveling show was first coming to a theater near us, only to find she was 44,000th in line for just a few thousand tickets. Demand kept prices high. We had to wait until a family vacation to New York to go see it. I joined the Hamilton lottery every day, with no luck. Croak! Now you can get seats without stressing out (if you plan ahead). "Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now." Weekday tickets are easier to get than weekends.
4. Visit NYC or find a location near you
If you are able to visit New York ("the greatest city in the world"), you can see the show at the Richard Rogers Theater.
Be sure to check out the traveling schedule. The show might be coming to a theater near you! That means you have a greater shot at getting tickets for less. Here's a look at the traveling show schedule and locations.

Tips for Seeing Hamilton
We have a few tips for seeing Hamilton live:
- Familiarize yourself with the music and history (especially the Revolutionary War, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr).
- Buy Hamilton tickets early for the best selection.
- Know that some actors play different characters in the first act versus the second act.
- Bring a marker and wait for the cast to come out to sign your Playbill (if available).
- Be aware that there is adult language in the show and some implied sexual activity.
- Discuss with your kids that our Founding Fathers as humans did great things but also made mistakes. Talking points from the show can include slavery, women's rights during those times and resolving conflicts, among others.
- Make your own Hamilton history tour in New York.
- Find the right seats with a full view of the stage.
We've seen the show in New York at the Richard Rodgers Theatre from the mezzanine and front half of the orchestra, and the views are great even from the sides for the most part. However, the very front orchestra sides and boxes offer a partial view. The last two rows of the orchestra may have partial views that block the view of the upper level of the set (due to the mezzanine above those seats affecting sight lines). Go for seats higher up instead of the lower back. And choose the middle in front instead of the front sides.
About that Hamilton history tour ... when we visited New York City, I lived and breathed everything Hamilton. My parents took me around Manhattan to historical sites mentioned in "Hamilton: An American Musical." You can read about it in our post on things to do in New York with kids. We visited Trinity Church to see Alexander Hamilton's grave (and Eliza Hamilton's too). Later, we hopped over to Fraunce's Taverne, where we saw locks of George Washington's hair and some of his teeth, as well as Lafayette's sash. We also visited Federal Hall on Wall Street, where George Washington took the oath of office to be our first President. Did you know that a Broadway play that is mostly rapped could spark such as love of history? Toadally cool!
