Ever since San Fransokyo Square took over the old Pacific Wharf area of Disney California Adventure Park, we have enjoyed all of the new foods the land has to offer. The fictional city of San Fransokyo is an East-meets-West city, so its cuisine is best described as an Asian/American/Mexican fusion with California influences. And we couldn't be hoppier about it! If you can't try everything (because there is a lot), you'll want to experience the highlights. With that being said, let's hop right into our frog-favorite San Fransokyo food recommendations!
Our Favorite San Fransokyo Food Items
All of the restaurants in San Fransokyo Square are quick-service dining locations, and they all use Mobile Order service, except for Ghirardelli. In this guide, we offer our top three picks for each restaurant. But just know, it was toadally difficult to choose!
Aunt Cass Café
Aunt Cass Café took over the old Pacific Wharf Café location. The menu changed slightly to tie in some innovative, new flavors. For example, you can still get clam chowder in a bread bowl, but the clam chowder recipe has changed to a miso-flavored soup with bacon. Because there are so many food options at this spot, we labeled our top three picks as follows:
Top Bread Bowl Pick: The Curry Beef Bread Bowl is perfect for adventurous eaters. The Macaroni and Cheese Bread Bowl is for kids and picky eaters. These two are especially great options on cool days.
Top Sandwich: The Turkey Pesto Club is a huge, fresh deli sandwich that is great for sharing. You just can't go wrong with it.
Top Salad: Whether you order it with shrimp or just as its plant-based version, the Soba Noodle Salad is a colorful and tasty option. This cold salad is perfect for a hot day.
But since our tastes may not match yours, here's the full food menu:
- Curry Beef: Beef, carrots, potatoes and onions cooked in classic curry topped with rice, pickled ginger and green onions served in a Boudin sourdough bread bowl (this has a spicy kick!)
- San Fransokyo Clam Chowder: Creamy clam chowder with bacon, potatoes and a hint of white miso served in a Boudin sourdough bread bowl
- Macaroni and Cheese in a Sourdough Bowl
- Soba Noodle Salad with tofu, cabbage, edamame, carrots, roasted corn, scallions and cilantro topped with crispy shallots and sesame ginger dressing (plant-based)
- Chilled Shrimp Soba Noodle Salad with tofu, cabbage, edamame, carrots, roasted corn, scallions and cilantro topped with crispy shallots and sesame ginger dressing
- Japanese-style Fluffy Cheesecake
- Shrimp Katsu Sandwich: Panko-breaded shrimp patty on a potato bun with cabbage slaw, spicy mayo and katsu sauce served with garlic chips
- Turkey Pesto Club: Roasted turkey breast, pesto aїoli, Havarti cheese, bacon, arugula and tomato on herb focaccia served with potato chips
- Steamed Rice
- Boudin Sourdough Loaf, Round or Baguette (plant-based)
- Turkey Sandwich (Disney Check Kids Meal)
- Macaroni and Cheese Kids Meal
Lucky Fortune Cookery
Much of the menu for this existing Asian restaurant was updated for San Fransokyo Square. We pretty much love everything here, so it's tough to pick. Here are our selections!
Best Vegetable Dish: The Yaki Udon is great with chicken or as a plant-based meal. You cannot go wrong with a tasty dish that is full of veggies!
Popular Favorite: The Birria Ramen seems to be a very popular dish here, and for good reason! However, we suggest saving this hot and spicy soup for a chilly day. On a warmer day, if you like birria, we say get the birria tacos at Cocina Cucamonga instead.
Special Mention: The Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken Sandwich is a great pick for those who want a reliable, savory food option in the land.
Here's the full menu at this location:
- Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken Sandwich with slaw and Togarashi mayonnaise on a potato bun served with garlic chips
- Beef Birria Ramen with consomé served with house-made birria, soft-boiled egg, Monterey Jack, cilantro, roasted corn, onions and radish
- Yaki Udon with mushrooms, sugar snap peas, roasted red peppers, bok choy and dark soy and hoisin sauces (plant-based)
- Yaki Udon with Karaage-inspired Chicken with mushrooms, sugar snap peas, roasted red peppers, bok cho and dark soy and hoisin sauces
- Baymax Macaron filled with chocolate-hazelnut spread and buttercream
- Teriyaki Chicken with sautéed vegetables and steamed rice
- Beef Bulgogi Burrito with seasoned rice, cabbage slaw and garlic chips (we like this burrito a lot too!)
- Pot Stickers: Crispy vegetable and chicken pot stickers
- Teriyaki Chicken with sautéed vegetables and steamed rice (Kids Meal)
- Chicken and Rice with vegetables and steamed rice (Disney Check Kids Meal)
- Yaki Udon with mushrooms, sugar snap peas, bok choy, dark soy sauce and hoisin sauce (plant-based Kids Meal)
Cocina Cucamonga
There were not a lot of new additions to this restaurant, but you know what they say — if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Here are our picks!
Best New Item: We love the San Fransokyo-style Street Corn so much that we order it again and again, either with a meal or as a snack.
Best San Fransokyo Style Food: The QuesaBirria Street-style Tacos are delicious. These cheesy babies are so popular you cannot order more than two servings at the same time. They aren't new, but they are a crowd pleaser just the same. Plus, we think fans would riot if they took these off the menu.
Top Plant-Based Choice: The colorful and flavorful plant-based Tacos Dorados de Papa dish (behind the birria in the photo) is a winner for those who don't eat animal products.
Here's the food menu:
- San Fransokyo-style Street Corn with Togarashi mayonnaise, queso fresco, furikake and bonito flakes served with wheat chicharrones
- QuesaBirria Street-style Tacos: Braised beef and cheese tacos with tomatillo salsa and consomé
- Carne Asada Street-style Tacos: Citrus-marinated grilled steak tacos with crushed avocados and fuego salsa
- Pollo Asado Street-style Tacos: Achiote-marinated grilled chicken tacos with crushed avocados and fuego salsa
- Tacos Dorados de Papa: Crispy potato tacos topped with cabbage slaw, crema and tomatillo salsa (plant-based)
- Frijoles Charros: Chorizo and bacon stewed pinto beans
- Lime-Cilantro Rice
- Kids Meals
- Carne Asada Taco (Kids Meal)
- Pollo Asado Taco (Kids Meal)
This is a great location to dine if you have a gluten-free diet.
Best San Fransokyo Snacks
Sourdough Bread: One of our favorite snacks to take home is a loaf of fresh Sourdough bread from the cart outside of Aunt Cass or inside. You can get it shaped like Baymax, Mickey or sometimes a seasonal shape. (Here's a money-saving hack: Mickey is a better value than the cute Baymax due to size and price, and they taste the same. Mickey is bigger but costs $1 less than Baymax!)
Best New Item: We can't get enough of the San Fransokyo-style Street Corn from Cocina Cucamonga. Some people do not like the furikake and bonito flakes if they are averse to fish. We did not pick up on that as a strong flavor, but we want to point it out if you are sensitive to it.
Best On-the-Go Snack: The Gyoza Sausage Bun with a side of chili soy dipping sauce from Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería is a latecomer to the menu, with a nice surprise. The flavor is in the sauce!
Best San Fransokyo Square Drinks
Each of the restaurants offers themed drinks, both with and without alcohol. We cannot say we've tried them all yet, as there are so many frogtastic options, but here are the ones we enjoyed.
Top Caffeinated Drink: The Thai Tea with Boba, from Lucky Fortune Cookery, comes with a frothy layer of sea salt cream on top.
Best Sweet Drink Location: Rita's Turbine Blenders makes margaritas (with a flavored biscuit stick) and nonalcoholic Turbine Twirlers (with gummy rings on top).
Best Drink with Alcohol: The Peach Soju Citrus Cocktail at Aunt Cass Café is one of the smoothest alcoholic drinks in the land. But admittedly, I prefer a drink where I can't taste the alcohol. If you like the taste of tequila, go for the Melon Cocktail or Lime Margarita from Cocina Cucamonga instead. If you are looking for adult drinks, we have a post dedicated to the best drinks with alcohol at Disneyland.
Since Leap and I are definitely not beer connoisseurs, we'll let you be your own judge of the Karl Strauss beers at Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería. And believe it or not, we are not iced coffee connoisseurs either, so you won't see the Specialty Caramel Cold Brew in a toadally cute Baymax cup on our list. We liked the cup, though! We just have other favorite Disneyland iced coffees. For more on that, hop over to our post on the best spots to get a coffee in Disneyland!
Top San Fransokyo Desserts
After you eat, it's time for dessert! It's hard to compare desserts in San Fransokyo Square when there's an actual Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop on site. So yeah, the best sundaes and ice cream award goes to Ghirardelli. But what other desserts are there when you have a sweet tooth?
Cutest theme: The Baymax macaron from Lucky Fortune Cookery is absolutely delicious. While it's not our favorite macaron on the property (as the Green Alien Macarooooon at Alien Pizza Planet and the Snickers Macaron during the California Adventure Food and Wine Festival easily take the cake), Baymax is toadally cute and Instagram-able! It is filled with chocolate hazelnut spread and buttercream.
Seasonal Dessert: Any seasonal dessert or bread pudding is going to come out on top at Aunt Cass Café. The seasonal desserts here never let us down. The Japanese-style Fluffy Cheesecake was surprisingly not our cup of tea. But let us know if you enjoy it!
