Inside This Post

If you've been missing that wild, runaway mine train through the desert … you're not alone. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was closed for refurbishment for over a year, but the good news is, it's time to ride again. This Magic Kingdom favorite reopened May 3, 2026, and it's back with some new magical updates while keeping everything we love about it. Now you folks oughta keep all hands, arms, feet and legs inside the train, 'cause this here's the wildest ride in the wilderness!

What Is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a family-friendly roller coaster in Magic Kingdom that takes you on a runaway train ride through an abandoned gold mine in the Old West.

The story begins when Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region, quickly turning the area into a booming mining town. But before long, things took a turn. Strange and inexplicable events began to happen — equipment failed, cave-ins shut everything down and miners began to believe the mountain itself was haunted.

Eventually, the town was abandoned … but the trains didn't stop running.

Now, guests climb aboard these out-of-control mine trains and race through the desert landscape, weaving through red rock canyons, dark caverns, narrow passageways and the ghost town ruins of Tumbleweed.

Big Thunder Mountain is one of four "mountains" at Magic Kingdom — Space Mountain, Tiana's Bayou Adventure (formerly Splash Mountain), Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are the others.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's Newest Updates

Big Thunder underwent a "mountain-top to cavern-deep" refurbishment. The updates include an all-new track, updated ride vehicles and enhancements to the cavern scenes.

While not officially part of the refurb, we'll get to peep the construction and updates hoppenin' to the upcoming Piston Peak and Villain Land expansions.

New Track

Disney Parks Blog shared that a new track was installed to add "new life, movement and detail" to the ride experience.

Updated Ride Vehicles

The passenger trains also got a little overhaul, complete with a comprehensive review from the Disney safety teams.

New Height Requirement

Yah! Now even more family-friendly, Big Thunder Mountain has a new height requirement of 38", down from 40", so now even more littles can ride.

What's Coming to Disney World and Universal - Big Thunder Mountain

Rainbow Caverns

One of the biggest additions is an updated underground cavern scene.

As your train dips into the mine, you’ll discover glowing, phosphorescent pools and rock formations. The stalagmites and stalactites shimmer and illuminate in rainbow-like colors, adding a whole new visual moment to the ride.

But don't get too comfortable down there … a deep, menacing rumble from within the mountain is your warning that you might not be welcome!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - view of the coaster going around Big Thunder Mountain

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad isn't open during Early Entry, but we still highly recommend arriving for Early Entry.

Instead of heading right toward Fantasyland or Tomorrowland, go left and wait near the entrance to Frontierland for rope drop. Once the park officially opens (and sometimes even a few minutes before), cast members will "drop the rope," and you can head straight to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and hop on with hopefully little to no wait.

Can I ride Big Thunder during Extended Evening Hours?

Yes! Big Thunder remains open on select nights during Extended Evening Hours, a perk that Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resort guests can take advantage of.

More Tips for Riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Here are a few more tips you want to know before you go.

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has an interactive queue, so if you do end up waiting, there are fun details and storytelling elements to explore along the way, especially nice for keeping the kiddos entertained.
  • Plan to bring your bags on the ride with you. There are no lockers here, so anything you bring into the park will come on the ride with you. Secure your bag so nothing shifts around during the ride.
  • Secure loose items before you board. Take off mouse ears, hats and sunglasses before you board. Each seat has a small pocket in front of you where you can quickly stash smaller items before the ride starts.
  • Ride early or later in the evening. Your best bet for shorter wait times is first thing in the morning or later at night, especially during parade or fireworks times when crowds shift elsewhere. Avoid the middle of the day if you can. This is one of the most popular rides in Magic Kingdom, and wait times tend to peak in the afternoon.
  • Try the "look at the goat" trick. According to popular Disney lore, as you go up the second lift hill, look at the goat on your right and keep your eyes on it as long as you can. It creates a spinning sensation that makes the ride feel even more intense (in a fun way).
