What We Know About Monsters, Inc. Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios

During the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23, Disney made the exciting announcement about an up-and-coming "Monsters, Inc."-themed land. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro, joined by Disney Legend (and voice of Mike Wazowski) Billy Crystal revealed the plans.

The new area will bring the world of "Monsters, Inc." to life, allowing guests to walk the streets of Monstropolis alongside their favorite monsters. The land will pick up after the original film's events, inviting humans into the monster world for the first time.

After the world-changing discovery that human laughter is far more powerful than screams, monsters began to not only grow curious about humans, but desire a connection with them. Enter the Department of Human Relations — a new team established by the city of Monstropolis tasked with helping monsters better understand humans as welcomed guests.

The first order of business for this unorthodox HR Department: establishing H.U.M.A.N. (short for "Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice") Day. Part celebration, part cultural exchange, this day of festivities is designed to introduce humans to life inside Monstropolis while helping monsters discover that humans aren't so frightening after all.

During its inaugural year, human guests will have the opportunity to explore Monstropolis, shop its stores, meet its scaly and furry citizens, taste unique cuisine — including some grub at the infamous Harryhausen's where Mike and Celia had their ... memorable ... date — catch a show at the Glob Theater and step into the everyday world of monsters in a completely new way.

As for the main attraction, you're going to want to hold on tight! Disney's first-ever suspended coaster will take guests on a thrilling ride through the iconic vault door. Hey, they scare because they care. ;) Josh D'Amaro expressed his excitement for the project, saying he has dreamed of riding through the door vault since the movie's release in 2001. Monsters Inc. Land will also host an all-new theater show.

At SXSW 2025, Disney revealed a first look at the loading station. Just like how the claw snatches up the doors in the movie, the roller coaster will utilize a vertical lift before sending riders off into the Monsters, Inc. factory.

Closures and Refurbishments to Make Way for Monsters, Inc. Land

Monster, Inc. Land - new coaster concept art

Currently, there is no set opening date. However, construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, which meant that a few experiences were closed to do so. Grand Avenue area began a phased closing in May 2025 to make way for the monsters. The last day to dine at Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano was May 10. Then in June, Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo closed June 8, with June 7 as the last day to experience them.

But don't worry — the Muppets have moved to Sunset Boulevard to headline Rock 'n' Roller Coaster! This new overlay opened on May 26, 2026, and we absolutely adore what they've done to the iconic G-Force Records. For a look at some hilarious Easter eggs and a listen to some sick tunes, check out our video of the full queue, pre-show experience and a front row POV below.

Hop over to our refurbishments post to stay on top of all of the construction news.

We're not screaming, you're screaming! What other experiences, attractions or restaurants would you like to see added to the "Monsters, Inc."-themed land? Let us know in the comments below. We're crossing our frog fingers for a real-life Harryhausen's sushi restaurant, complete with "Scream Rolls."

It looks great. Just wish it wasn't ANOTHER Coaster. There are other theme parks with LOTS of coasters.....so much cooler when Disney does a ride like Avatar Flights of Passage.

Feels like too many recent expansions are coasters.
