Disney World Refurbishments & Closings

by Leap on March 18, 2024 323 Orlando

Inside This Post Inside This Post

Want to know what's going to be closed while you're visiting the theme parks? We've put together this list of Walt Disney World (plus Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and Legoland Florida) closings and refurbishments. Refurbishments are temporary closures and can be subject to change without notice. Permanent closures are rides that are no longer active in the parks, and seasonal ones are those that take place annually.

At Sea World Orlando the orca stadium is under construction. So there is no big show. They have a presentation at the underwater viewing area which is not the same. I was there February 7 and 8th. There were a lot of people in the park who were unaware like me that there was no big stadium show.

We have planned a trip to Universal for the end of this month to celebrate my daughter’s 11th birthday. One of the highlights would have been to ride the Hogwart’s Express between the parks. That’s the only reason that we bought park to park tickets.???? At least we have time now to cancel or reschedule our trip, but her 11th birthday only happens once.???? Thanks for the heads up!

The parking trams have returned at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, but are still not in service for EPCOT or Hollywood Studios. Disney had previously stated that all parking trams would return throughout this year.

Hi, we live in New Zealand and want to visit Orlando next January. We have previously been to Disneyland LA and purchased a 10 day pass offered to NZ & Australia. Is there anything like that for Disney World? I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of something similar on offer for UK visitors. Thanks for any advice.

This was excellent information to know.......but I received it 4 days into my trip, so it didn't help us for Disney. There were quite a few attractions closed there. We didn't know that there would be no meet and greets (so unfortunately I couldn't get a pic with my/our favorite characters). To those that are reading this comment, there are mini parades with at least one character running about every hour, characters coming out on balconies, and some stages characters come out onto.

For Universal, this information was very helpful. It came on the same day we were going there. :-)

We will not have the Halloween party information until possibly late spring, unfortunately. We will be sure to keep you updated as we hear more! Usually there is a Halloween Party on Halloween Night. The good news is that the Oogie Boogie Bash will return for 2020 and takes place at Disney California Adventure. Since that park usually closes earlier, maybe we will get a Saturday night Halloween Party! Christmas will not start until the first or second weekend in November.

I am so upset with all of these refurbishments. I have been saving for this trip for a year and a half and now have to deal with this. It is mine and my daughters first trip there and I'm worried after the holiday season they are going to start even more refurbishments. We are scheduled to visit Jan.14-22. I know just being there will be exciting but this sure puts a damper on a maybe once in a lifetime trip for us.

Belinda..the things you are missing you probably wouldn't enjoy during this time frame. This is when I've gone in the past (to escape the northern cold) and I would recommend a sweatshirt light jacket most days. It's not as busy as other times and your trip of a lifetime will be just that! Enjoy your daughter and every small and large magical moment :)

hello, we will be visiting nov 24-29th. since the monorail isn't working fully will we be directed to which transportation to use after parking to visit MK? If I remember correctly the other parks, the parking lot is right by(not needing to take another mode to get there)

also I had read on another site that during busy season, which we will be there during one, that they can close the park not allowing in guests. I'm guessing this will only happen if you decide to go later in the day. ours plans are to get there when the park opens in not earlier.

Hi Tiffany!

If you'll be driving and parking at Magic Kingdom, you'll need to take either the boat or monorail back to the parking lot - so if the monorail is out of order at that location, you'd be instructed to hop on the boat. Hope this helps!

Its our Golden Wedding Anniversary, and I'm inviting any suggestions for a special celebration as we'll have our 2 grandchildren with us too. We're not so mobile as our several visits many years ago now!, but curious if there are any Disney/Universal add-ons that would make this visit even more memorable...

Hi Brian!

First of all, congratulations! That is certainly something to celebrate :) At Universal, you can get a free celebratory button, for starters! We’d suggest that you walk by the Mystic Fountain to let it know that you’re celebrating. It’ll probably improvise and say something special! At Disney World, you can also get a button, and it might be a nice memento to get some fresh celebratory ears :) We'd also suggest a dinner together as a family at a park of your choosing or even Disney Springs - be sure to let them know when booking that it's your anniversary, and let your server know upon being seated, as well! Some other add-ons include VIP tours, and don't froget to add on photo packages at both parks to keep those memories with you! Others in the Frog Pond may have some suggestions, as well. Have a wonderful time!

I understand that Mickey will no longer be at the Town square theatre (as of Sept 30)? Is this correct or is it that Minnie will no longer be with him (or no longer the birthday outfits)? I also see they stopped the character spot at Epcot too. We go the week of October 7, only hitting Magic Kingdom and Epcot, where can we get pictures with Mickey?

Reply
Sep 9, 2019 at 12:16 p.m. FrogBlog Says...

Hi Beth!

In the past, this has just been a meet-and-greet for Mickey, so our best guess is that after Sept. 30, it'll go back to just Mickey without his fun confetti celebration outfit. The Character Spot in Epcot is closing temporarily to make way for some changes, but we unfortunately don't have an estimated re-opening date just yet. Be sure to get a Times Guide when you enter to see if he'll be popping up somewhere else! (We'll also update this post as soon as we know more.)

Hi there!

It looks like the flooring in the lobby is being replaced in several stages through September 7th, so it may overlap with your stay. However, because this is being done in stages, we don't anticipate it being much of an intrusion. (In fact, Disney doesn't even have this listed in their general refurbishment list). Do you know when the refurbishment will start at Saratoga Springs Resort? Any ideas as to which areas they will start with?

Hi Sarah!

No dates have been released just yet (only that it will be happening shortly, most likely late 2019 into 2020/2021), but as soon as we have something firm, we'll be sure to update!

I don't see it listed, but I believe that the Jurassic Park ride at Universal is currently closed for refurb as it is being turned into Jurassic World, any idea as to whether it will be re-opened by the beginning of August?

Hi Kathy!

Universal Studios Hollywood will be opening Jurassic World: The Ride (the refurbishment of the former Jurassic Park ride), but Orlando's Jurassic Park River Adventure is still up and running as usual. We don't know the opening date yet, but as soon as we know more, we'll be sure to update!

Hi, we are visiting Disneyworld from November 3rd for two weeks, we were wondering if Typhoon Lagoon will be the water park that is open at this time of year as we’ve noticed in past years that Disney have swapped which water park is open during this time of year.

Thank you!

Hi Kelly!

You're correct! If we go by past schedules, it should be Typhoon Lagoon that is open in November, as it typically goes through its refurbishment from January - March, while Blizzard Beach gets spruced up from October - January.

Going to Disney world from May 11 to May 17? What are the chances that tomorrow land speedway and Rafikis Planet watch will be open?

Reply

Hi Alex!

Unfortunately, the most up-to-date information that we have is that Rafiki's Planet watch will re-open in "spring", and that Tomorrowland Speedway will be open mid-May. We'll be sure to add updates as we receive them!

With the new select your date tickets at Walt Disney World, do you have to go to a park the first day you select? We are going to be there 6 days and I want to purchase a 5 day ticket. I am not sure if we are over tired from our flight we might not want to go that first day but will go the following 5 days? this is confusing.

Hi Sue!

That's correct - when selecting your date for tickets, you'll need to choose the date you think you'll enter the parks. If you DO end up skipping a day, I'd suggest heading to the ticketing booth (if you're purchasing directly from Disney) to see if they can help adjust the ticket for you.

Does admission to Universal Orlando also include the Harry Potter portion? I've been given mixed messages. Thank you!

Hi Dan!

This depends on which ticket you purchase. Universal Studios is comprised of two parks: Islands of Adventure (where the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is located) and Universal Studios. If the ticket says "1 park," you can either go to Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios, but not both in the same day; if you have a 2-park ticket, you can go to both parks in the same day. (We have a hoppin' deal right now where you can get a 2 day, 2 park ticket to Universal, plus 2 additional days FREE!)

What is the best time for a Holiday (Christmas) visit to WDW? What about the time between Christmas and New Year?

Hi Ben,

These are the very busiest times of the year to visit. Earlier in December is better, although this year with the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, we expect it will be busier all month.

Do you have any idea when all the rooms at the All Star Movies Resort will be some? We are going at the beginning of April 2019 and hope construction will be done and to have the new rooms. Thanks

Hi Leah!

The room updates at All Star Movies are still going on, though there's no end date available to the public. It never hurts to give the resort a call and request a finished room! They look beautiful -- enjoy your trip!

I am shortly booking with you accommodation at Art of Animation plus Disneyworld tickets. Could you please tell me if I still get the free shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel and can I purchase a Memory Maker through you.

Hi Rhonda,

Yes, you can use Disney's Magical Express if you purchase with us. Here are more details. You would need to purchase Memory Maker directly through Disney.

Hello!

We´re planning a trip to WDW on late April - beginning of May/2020 and we want to stay on Pop. Do you guys think the hippy dippy pool will already be open again? I´m not sure what Disney considers early spring lol Thanks in advance!

Hi Camila!

Unfortunately, they haven't released the exact date (or month) to know what Disney means by "early spring" for the Hippy Dippy pool refurb. We'll update this list as soon as we know more!

Hello, we are visiting Disney World the week of January 20th in 2020. Is it safe to say we won't be able to ride any water rides like Kali RR or Splash Mtn?

Hi Amber!

Historically, January has been a refurbishment time for both Kali River Rapids and Splash Mountain, unfortunately.

Hi! I'm planning a birthday trip for my son to Disney this September. Any idea how will be the weather? The use of umbrellas will be extremely necessary?

Thanks!

Hi Karen,

The average temperature in Orlando in September is a high of 84 degrees and a low of 70 degrees, with 11 rainy days. However, you just never know in Orlando, and we highly recommend packing some ponchos and a travel umbrella just to be safe. You can see more details about the average daily temperature on our Crowd Calendar.
