Answering FAQs About Using Lightning Lanes and Genie Plus at Disney World

FAQs About Disney Genie - PinterestSaving time in the theme parks is toadally our jam! That's part of why we loved using Disney Genie Plus at Walt Disney World. If you're planning on visiting Disney World in 2024, Disney is making skip the line services easier to use. As of July 24, 2024, Genie+ is retiring to the lamp. In its place, you'll be able to purchase and make selections ahead of time with Disney Lightning Lane Passes.

Genie+ Tips - Toy Story Mania Lightning Lane

Here's what to know about Lighting Lane Multi Pass changes:

  • All guests can book three attractions per day up to three days early at 7 a.m. ET. You can purchase the service at 7 a.m. as well.
  • Disney World hotel guests have an advantage in being able to purchase and book seven days early (from check-in date) through the end of their trip (up to 14 days). That benefit also includes guests staying at Shades of Green Resort or the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels.
  • There are tiers for the rides. You can choose one top tier ride and two lower tier rides (or just three lower tier rides). We go into all the new tiers for each park and their details in our Disney Genie Plus guide.
  • You can select an available arrival window for each attraction. Once you book for one day, you can move on to book for the next day.
  • You must book the first three rides in one park (and you must book the same attractions for the whole party initially, but you can modify if some party members want to do their own thing).
  • Once you have entered a park and redeemed your first Lightning Lane, you can go to the My Disney Experience app to select another attraction (subject to availability). If park hopping, you can select a new attraction in either park.
  • You can only book the rides in the park one by one. No more booking after two hours if you have not redeemed the first one.

What's changing with individual Lightning Lanes?

The individual Lightning Lane also has a new name as of July 24. It will be called Lightning Lane Single Pass. Each Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction still has a cost. (Remember that the standby lines and virtual queues remain free). The ride selection remains the same as before. Here are the other changes:

  • Each Lightning Lane Single Pass goes on sale at 7 a.m. ET.
  • All guests can purchase and book two Lighting Lane Single Pass attractions per day, up to three days early.
  • Disney World hotel guests (as well as Shades of Green Resort and Walt Disney world Swan and Dolphin Hotels guests) have an advantage in being able to purchase and book two Lighting Lane Single Pass attractions per day up to seven days early (from check-in date) through the end of their trip (up to 14 days).

What is Disney Genie?

Genie Plus at Disney World is a new FREE planning tool available in the My Disney Experience app. You can use this new technology to guide you through the theme parks with tips to help you reduce time in lines, discover Disney magic and take the guesswork out of planning your day. You can learn more about all that's included in the Disney Genie service in our full post here.

Disney Genie+ is a paid skip-the-line benefit that allows guests to enter through a special line (think of the former FastPass+ lines) rather than the standby line. Not all Disney attractions are available with Genie+, which we'll get into below — but a majority of popular Disney attractions are included with Genie+. This add-on is toadally optional. All rides continue to operate with either a standby queue or a virtual queue at no additional charge.

Disney Genie+ single and multi-park price options

As of June 27, 2023, Disney Genie+ prices now vary by date and by park. Guests can choose either a multiple-park option (eligible with park hoppers) or choose a single-park option. Each of the four theme parks will offer a different price point. Since Genie+ can only be purchased on the day of, guests should double-check the My Disney Experience app for the current price.

Tadpoles under 3 years old (who do not require an admission ticket) do not need to purchase Genie+ to go with their party.

When can I purchase Genie Plus at Disney World?

You can purchase Disney Genie+ day by day on each day of your trip using the My Disney Experience app. Genie+ is available for purchase when the clock strikes midnight on the day of your visit, but you don't need to stay up late (instead, make sure to purchase about 15 minutes early to secure it before the 7 a.m. selection process). All guests can make their first Genie+ selection at 7 a.m. from anywhere. As of June 8, 2022, all guests need to purchase Disney Genie+ service this way, daily, dependent on availability. During busy times, Genie+ can sell out by park (and the multi-park option becomes unavailable once a single park sells out).

Can I purchase Genie+ without a park reservation?

Yes! As of Jan. 9, 2024, date-based tickets no longer require a park reservation, so you can purchase Genie+ without a park reservation.

How does Disney Genie+ work?

You can make your selections across all of the theme parks if you have a Park Hopper ticket and purchase the Multiple-Park option with Genie+ (look near the bottom of the "My Day" tab where it says, "Plan for Your Next Park" to let Genie know your park hopping plans). These reservations can be made within the My Disney Experience app. One big change for people who have used FastPass is that you can only book a particular ride once per day.

Which Disney World attractions are included with Genie+?

What is not included with Genie Plus at Disney World?

A few in-demand rides (and rides that utilize a virtual queue) are excluded from Disney Genie+. Instead, these rides will be available for an additional price per ride, such as TRON Lightcycle Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. These a la carte options can be purchased same-day, in-park. You can use a pay-per-ride for a particular attraction once per day and pay to upgrade for up to two different rides per day (regardless of where you are staying).

What is Lightning Lane?

Disney Genie FAQ - Lightning Lane Entrance

Lightning Lane is the name of the queue you will enter at each attraction. The FastPass entrances have been renamed Lightning Lanes (ka-chow!).

Do you have to purchase Genie+ to buy individual Lightning Lane selections?

No, you do not need to have Genie+ to purchase individual Lightning Lane selections. (You can opt for one or the other, or purchase both skip-the-line options.)

Which attractions are included as individual Lightning Lane selections?

Disney Genie - Individual Lightning Lane Selections

Can Genie+ rides "sell out"?

Genie+ rides are not guaranteed. The most popular rides can run out of available Genie+ Lightning Lane selections. We usually see this later in the day for most attractions. However, the most popular ones can run out within minutes during busier periods. Don't give up hope on them, though! You might see more availability pop up later, possibly due to cancellations. Act quickly on those if you see them.

Likewise, Disney Genie+ service is subject to availability, which means single and multi-park options could potentially sell out for the day.

If I am park hopping, but only want to buy Genie+ for one park, can I?

Yes! You will have the option in My Disney Experience to purchase the multi-park or an individual park option.

What if I choose Genie+ service for a single park and later want to park hop with Genie+?

Stop by Guest Relations to see if upgrades are available for the day!

How much are individual Lightning Lane selections?

Pricing and availability may vary by date, attraction and park. These tend to range between $7 and $25 on any given day, however. You can see the price before you pay.

Can individual Lightning Lane selections sell out?

Yes. Once all the available add-on ride slots are filled, the individual Lightning Lane box will say, "Not currently offered."

Do offerings ever change?

Yes! Originally Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, Frozen Ever After, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure were individual Lightning Lane selections but are now included in Genie+.

As of March 20, 2023, attraction photo downloads are now included with Disney Genie+. If you purchase Genie+, you'll be able to download any ride photos from that day at no additional cost. This includes popular attractions such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, Test Track and more! Check out our guide to Disney World ride photos for more details.

Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane Selection Process FAQs

How do you select a time window for a Genie+ attraction?

Genie Service Guide - Tip Board

For Genie+ attractions, navigate to your "Tip Board" (from the main menu, you can find it under "Rides, Shows and Lightning Lane Entry") where you can only book the next available time window, which could be as soon as five minutes later or hours away. You cannot initially make them in advance for times that are later in the day (however, you can modify times — see below!). Click on "Book Experience." The next page will confirm the arrival window (note: due to demand, this can change), show if you have any overlapping plans and you can adjust your party, if needed, before you officially book it.

Can you edit your Genie+ reservation?

Yes! Guests can now easily modify a Genie+ reservation instead of having to cancel and rebook. You may change the selected attraction to a different attraction within the same theme park or the time window (as well as the party members). Thanks to this game-changing update, you can have more flexibility with your Genie+ plans without having to sacrifice the two-hour waiting period to make your next one! We recommend refreshing so that if you see a better time pop up, you can adjust it and not have to risk losing that reservation.

How soon can you make another Genie+ attraction selection if you can only get one at a time?

You can make another Genie+ selection when one of the following happens (whichever comes first):

  • You tap in for your last booked Genie+ reservation.
  • The window for your last booked Genie+ reservation passes.
  • It's 120 minutes after the park opened (if you made your first res at 7 a.m.).
  • It's been 120 minutes after making a reservation during normal park hours.

Can you book more than one experience?

You can only make one Genie+ selection at a time, but you can hold overlapping Genie+ selections because there is a two-hour window before you're able to select another one. You can also purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection that overlaps with a Genie+ selection.

It is possible to join a virtual queue (when in use) AND purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection for the same ride, thus granting you the ability to ride twice in a day.

But what if my Genie+ return time window is more than two hours away?

As we mentioned before, you can only select the next available time. So, if it's a particularly busy day, you might find that, when you're looking at noon, the next available time for a popular ride could be 7 p.m. Snag it anyway! Your ability to make Genie+ selections will be frozen for two hours, but starting at 2 p.m., you can make another Genie+ selection for another ride. If that ride is more than two hours away, then, at 4 p.m., you can make one more, and so on.

Speaking of individual Lightning Lane selections, is that process different?

Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs - Individual Lightning Lane Selection Process Screenshot

Yes! For individual Lightning Lane selections, you can select any of the available time windows that pop up, which range throughout the day. For best availability, select at 7 a.m. if you're a Disney World Resort hotel guest or a guest of select hotels in Orlando, or right at the park open, if not. It will show any overlapping plans and allow you to edit your party, if needed. You'll still want to make these as quickly as possible, as the time could potentially change or a ride could sell out while you make one.

How does Genie+ work if you're park hopping?

If wanting to use Genie+ in multiple parks in one day, be sure to purchase the multiple-park option. Let Genie know that you're park hopping by going to the "My Day" tab and selecting which park(s) you'll be hopping to and during which hours, so Genie can make recommendations based on your park hopping plans.

As of Jan. 9, 2024, all-day park hopping is back!

If you cancel a Genie+ reservation, did you use your only chance for that attraction?

No! Because you can only use Genie+ access once per attraction, you do need to modify or cancel it if you wish to change your arrival time. If you miss your window and do not successfully cancel or modify it, you will not be able to make another reservation for that attraction. We missed our arrival window for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. The reservation did not disappear right away, but when we checked 15 minutes later, it was gone. We attempted to make another but could not because we were ineligible since we "used" it already.

Can you be early or late to your Genie+ or individual Lightning Lane reservation?

The arrival windows are meant to be firm, so you must get there on time. (We were able to scan into the first touchpoint at Haunted Mansion five minutes early though.) If you're late, the cast members may not be able to let you through. If it's an instance that's out of your control (such as a different ride breaking down that caused you to be late), we suggest kindly explaining the situation, but it's up to the discretion of the cast members at the attraction entrance.

What if the attraction that you have a Genie+ or individual Lightning Lane selection for breaks down?

Don't worry! There are certain recovery efforts that the cast members will be able to implement, in case this happens. For instance, if you paid for an individual Lightning Lane selection that you haven't used yet but it breaks down and never reopens, a refund or gift card may be offered. If the ride breaks down after you've already scanned in and are waiting in line, then you may not be able to get a refund, but they could issue a Multiple Experiences Pass or a different return time window instead. Cast members will take care of you! Look for the blue Customer Experience umbrellas.

Is Genie+ available during Early Theme Park Entry, Extended Evening Hours or After Hours events?

No, Genie+ and the individual Lightning Lane selections are only available during normal park hours.

Can I book for multiple people?

Yes! You can reserve Genie+ or individual Lightning Lane selections for up to 12 people — you'll need to be connected in the "My Family and Friends" area of the My Disney Experience app.

Miscellaneous Disney Genie and Genie+ FAQs

Is Genie+ different at Disneyland and Disney World?

Yes! While both services vary in price depending on the day, Genie+ at Disney World typically starts at $15 per day, while Disneyland Genie+ starts at $25 per day. Genie+ at Disneyland includes PhotoPass unlimited PhotoPass downloads while just attraction photos are included with Genie+ at Disney World (plus some fun photo lenses!) At Disneyland, you can purchase Disneyland tickets with Genie+ included in advance, while Genie+ at Disney World can only be purchased same-day within the My Disney Experience app.

What else is included in Genie Plus at Disney World?

Aside from Lightning Lane access, Genie+ includes augmented reality photo lenses and audio experiences at both resorts.

As of March 20, 2023, attraction photo downloads come with with Disney Genie+. If you purchase Genie+, you'll be able to download any ride photos from that day at no additional cost. This includes popular attractions such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, Test Track and more!

Do Disney Resort Hotel guests get any perks related to Genie+?

Remember those individual, a la carte Lightning Lane options we talked about? Disney World Resort hotel guests are able to make those reservations as early as 7 a.m. on the day of their visit (versus the general public who cannot reserve until park opening). That's a huge advantage for hotel guests, as popular rides such as TRON may run out of reservation windows. All guests, regardless of where they stay, are limited to a maximum of two pay-per-ride attractions per day. You can only book a particular ride once per day.

What about Annual Passholders?

Annual Passholders will need to purchase Genie+ on the day(s) of their visit.

Can we purchase tickets pre-loaded with Genie Plus at Disney World?

Disney World tickets no longer come with the option to include Genie+. Instead, you will need to purchase Genie+ the morning of, each day of your trip (subject to availability). If you purchased tickets with the Genie+ add-on before June 8, 2022, they remain valid and you do not need to purchase again.

How many family/friends can I make a LL reservation for at one time? I will likely be in charge of everyone in our group. 13 of us, all have genie plus.

Hi Angela!

Good question! Lightning Lane reservations are limited to 12 people, whether it's through Disney Genie+ or an individual Lightning Lane selection. You'll just need to assign two people to be in charge of making selections, ensure that everyone is linked through Family & Friends, and look for & book Lightning Lane arrival windows that fall within the same or overlapping timeframe.

If I'm going to Disney World and taking one of my son's friends with us (age 14), can he buy the Disney Genie Plus through his app on his own or would I have to pay for his and link him to our accounts?

Hi Matt!

Yes, if your son's friend has his own account, then he may purchase Genie+ separately. But if you all want to make Genie+ reservations together, then you'll still need to link your accounts on the Family & Friends list so that everyone can be selected at simultaneously.

If I add Genie+ to my Disney World park tickets when I book a resort/ticket package and then later before travel decide that I don't want to use the Genie+ feature, is the Genie+ add on refundable before I arrive at Disney, still keeping my upcoming resort and park reservations?

Hi Mary!

If you purchase tickets pre-loaded with Genie+ for the length of your trip, the tickets are refundable, as is your full vacation package. But because Genie+ is a part of your ticket, in that instance, you would not be able to cancel just the Genie portion and maintain your tickets. You can, however, purchase regular tickets in advance, then add on Genie+ for each day during your trip, beginning at 7 a.m. in the My Disney Experience app. Hope this helps!

Hi Tracy!

We offer tickets with Genie+ included for the length of your ticket! You can find those here. If you would like to add Genie+ on to existing tickets, you can do so within the My Disney Experience app, under "Tickets and Passes." Choose "Change Ticket" and you'll see the option to add Genie+ (note: you'd be adding it to every day of your tickets. If you just want to purchase day-to-day, you would need to wait to purchase within the app on each day that you want to use it during your trip.)

Hi, we are travelling in April 2022 with our 3 kids (so a party of 5). We are not staying on a Disney property. I am finding conflicting information as to when we can start booking our genie + rides VS purchasing our 2 lightning lanes rides per day.

Also, what is our difference in park time hours?

Thanks in advance

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Lisa!

You will be able to make your first Disney Genie+ reservation at 7 a.m. (this applies to everyone, regardless of where they're staying). As for the individual Lightning Lane rides, since you are not staying on property, you can make your individual Lightning Lane selections when the respective park officially opens (times may vary depending on which park you're going to), while those staying at Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels and Shades of Green would be able to purchase at 7 a.m. each day.

If you're visiting Disneyland, then all guests need to wait until they're inside the park to book Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane selections.

How do members of my party control their own Genie+ 'ride reservations'? And, similarly, for the individual Lightning Lane reservations? All of our tickets are under one reservation but my daughters, for example, will want to go do their own thing. Having to come back to me to do ride reservations will be a pain. Hope there's a way to do it themselves.

Hi Vince!

When you go to make a ride reservation (for either a Genie+ or individual Lighting Lane ride), it will automatically select everyone in your party, but you're able to edit the party and remove people from the reservation. If they have their own account and as long as everyone in the party is linked together, then they should be able to make reservations from their phone(s) and remove you and anyone else who does not want to ride.

Hi Leap, I think it would help clarify the section about the rides that aren’t included in Genie+ if it mentioned that there are some rides that don’t have a lighting lane, and also don’t have the option to purchase the Individual Lighting Lane pass. Astro Orbiter for example, only has a standby line. It’s not a particularly in demand ride, and it doesn’t use a virtual queue. This ride also isn’t available for Individual Lighting Lane purchase. Since it’s one of the rides not included in Genie+, I think there should be some additional details under that section of this post that identifies that some attractions only have a standby line, and I think it should list what they are so the reader can get a better overview of cost vs. worth as they read which attractions just aren’t included at all.

Great Info! Question about G+. For a family of 4 who has already purchased G+ for mid-December; is it better for one person to load the app for the 4 of us OR for 2 people to have the app loaded to try and simultaneously get lightning lane reservations and individual lightning lane purchases for the 4 of us?

Hi David!

Two people could try looking for and booking reservations at the same time, but we'd have one person dedicated to getting the Genie+ selection while the other person tries to get the individual Lightning Lane selections (versus both trying to get two different Genie+ rides at once, since you can only book those one at a time within a certain timeframe). Just communicate between the two of you so you know what the other person is booking! (And side note, if you want to remove someone from a selection, be 100 percent sure that's what you want to do because it would be difficult to get them back on the same reservation.)

Great info! Question: If I wake up at 7am and book a time for Smuggler's Run for 1:30pm, but I also want to book an Individual Lightning Lane spot on Rise of the Resistance, can book both right then (at 7am), or does the 2-hour cooldown still apply when booking Individual Lightning Lanes and Genie+ attractions? I hope this makes sense!

Hi Ashley!

Thanks for hopping by! Since you'd be able to book both Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane attractions at 7 a.m., then yes, you can book ones for Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance at the same time, and the 2-hour limit only applies to Genie+ selections. It's also OK if the two time windows overlap so that you can get both done around the same time, but you'll still want to give yourself enough room to make it to (and ride) each one. We'd recommend getting one for Rise of the Resistance first (since it can sell out quickly).

If you visit blizzard beach park first then hop after 2pm to magic kingdom how does this work. Water park does not need reservation so would you need to make a reservation for magic Kingdom. This must also complicate genie+.

Hi Alison!

Yes, you would still need a Park Pass reservation for Magic Kingdom since it'll be the first theme park (that requires reservations) you'll be entering that day. And since Magic Kingdom is your "first" park, you don't have to wait until 2 p.m. to hop over from Blizzard Beach. As for Genie+, as long as you have a park reservation, you can book Genie+ selections before you tap in, so you can start making your selections once you see available time windows for when you will be in the park. Hope this helps!

Yes, if you're park hopping, that's toadally fine! Hi John!

Hmm. We know you can submit your Genie interests and preferences ahead of time by clicking on "Get a Jump on Your Park Day!," but you must have your tickets and Disney Park Pass reservations linked (so if yours aren't linked, perhaps that could be the issue). We haven't had any issues with our Tip Board, but whenever we've gotten a never-ending "Magical Touches" screen, we have deleted and reinstalled the app. It worked out for us, but we realize you mentioned it didn't work for you so we're not entirely sure! Are you trying to purchase Genie+? Because you need to wait until the day of your visit if it's not included with your ticket.

Hi, we have park hopper tickets for thanksgiving week. I am trying to learn about genie + and LL before I go so I can budget and pre-plan if and when we park hop. We have a toddler and a person in our group that can't ride some rides due to back issues. How does booking a ride work when you need to split up a group? Can some pay for the individual rides like 7 dwarfs and some not? does it give the option of who your group is per ride or is your group determined for the whole day when you purchase genie in the morning?

Reply

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Shanna!

When you purchase Genie+ and/or the individual Lightning Lane selections, your entire party will automatically be selected, but there is an option to edit your party before purchasing either option.

For Genie+ rides, as you select each ride, you can edit your party group among the people who have Genie+. (For example: There are five people total in a party, and two do not get Genie+. Each Genie+ reservation allows you to edit the party among those who have Genie+, so it's possible that all 3 go on Peter Pan's Flight, but later only 2 go on Splash Mountain.) However, if someone who doesn't have Genie+ changes their mind, you're not locked in for the remainder of the day because you could purchase Genie+ for them later — the service itself does not sell out (though depending on the ride, arrival windows can fill up).

For the individual Lightning Lane selections, you may edit the party for each ride you select before purchasing. Hope this helps, and let us know if you have any other questions!

Hello:

I have a question about the paid lightning lane. I have a 7-person party with a young child who will be too afraid to ride rise of the resistence - but everyone else really wants to go on. It's my understanding that Rise does not have rider swap. I know that we can only ride the lighting lane rides once per day. Can I book a lighting lane for part of my party, while the other stays with the child, and then book a seperate lighting lane for the other part of my party that did not ride? Or will I be prevented from doing that because we are all linked together as one party?

Hi Clara!

Rider Switch is available at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance! Alternatively, you are able to edit your party in order to purchase Lightning Lane access in separate groups.

Such great info! But I do have a question - I booked the reservation for my husband and I, my mom booked the reservation for herself and my dad. I linked all four of us on the app - does that mean I can purchase ILL and Genie+ for all of us day of? Or does my mom have to do it for her and my dad since she “owns” their reservation? Thanks!

Hi Leanne!

If you're all linked together, then you should be able to purchase for everyone! Anyone who's eligible with valid admission and a park reservation should be automatically selected when purchasing Genie+ or an individual Lightning Lane selection.

You probably need to link tickets within the app.

Our experience was that everyone using the app should link all tickets within their app.

This will make everything easier if at anytime anyone has connectivity issues, or their hands full, or just whatever. Then anyone else in the party can pull up tickets, access reservations, etc.

Hi Fred!

That is correct - certain attractions at both resorts (WEB Slingers at Disney California Adventure Park and Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park; and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT) also offer a free virtual queue to access the ride (the virtual queue acts as a lottery system, so there's some prep involved!). We have guides to Virtual Queues at Walt Disney World and Virtual Queues at Disneyland to walk you through the steps at either resort. Hope this helps!

We are staying at the Portofino in Universal and Yacht Club at Disney. Both 4 star hotels linked to the parks. The difference is we get Fast Pass (or what ever you want to call it) included at Universal but not at Disney , who is offering the best value for money . I leave it up to you to decide . I know what I think.

Hello! We are travelling from Australia next July 2022 to Disneyland. The dates are the 2-6th July. Given we have plenty of time, do you think we need the park hopper tickets and planning on buying 4-day pass? Second question, I know these dates co-incide with 4th July. What are the crowds typically like and how can we make sure that we get on the new Star Wars rides over this time given its the main reason for our visit and never experienced Star Wars Land before. Is it as easy as buying a Lightning Lane pass with Genie+ pass?

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Adriana!

The crowds are usually high for the Fourth of July, particularly Magic Kingdom and EPCOT which both have special Fourth of July fireworks. We'd weigh flexibility versus time spent for traveling between parks. Park hoppers would give you more flexibility (if one park is super busy, you could hop to another), but depending on crowds, it may be easier to stick to one park per day as it could take some time to hop between parks due to longer waits for transportation. Yes, getting both Genie+ (for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run) and an Individual Lightning Lane selection for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance would be one of the best ways to get access to the Star Wars rides.

Piggybacking on what Dan asked, is there a chance that a rides lightning lane will sell out like the old fast pass or will it be unlimited? If they do sell out you’re still running the risk of not getting a popular ride right away, or at all.

Hi Mike!

We're here to give you an update for your question! To clarify, the Genie+ service itself cannot sell out. However, a certain Genie+ ride could theoretically run out of time windows. We saw this happen with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Slinky Dog Dash, but more times could potentially pop up again due to cancellations (so keep an eye out for those and act quickly if you see one pop up after not being available!). The individual Lightning Lane selections can also sell out.

Hi Chris!

Disney Genie is the free planning tool which includes features such as a personalized tip board (based on your interests), forecasted future wait times, mobile ordering, restaurant wait lists and reservations, virtual queues and a virtual assistant — all in one spot for easy access in the My Disney Experience app for Disney World (or the Disneyland app for Disneyland). Genie+ is an upgrade that allows you to skip the lines at select attractions.

How far ahead in the day will genie + reservations be made?

In the days of FastPass, for popular rides, you might not get a reservation until very late in the day, like around 8pm. This meant you were “handcuffed” to that reservation, and you couldn’t do any others until that one was used. Will this be the case with Genie +?

Reply

FrogBlog Says...

Hi Dan!

Guests with Genie+ service can make their first ride selection beginning at 7 a.m. (regardless of where you're staying, on-site or off-site). Though you can only make one reservation at a time throughout the day. Once the selection is redeemed or the arrival window passes, you can make another selection.

For the individual Lightning Lane attraction selections (rides that aren't included with Genie+), then it varies. If you're a guest of a Disney Resort Hotel (or other select hotels such as Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels and Shades of Green), then you can make your two selections at the same time, starting at 7 a.m. All other guests can make these individual Lighting Lane attraction selections once the park opens for the day.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, but that didn’t really answer my question. Maybe you didn’t understand. Let’s say I really want to ride Tower of Terror and don’t want to do stand by, so I try to make a Genie+ reservation. But the only reservation available is at 8:30pm, 30 minutes before park closing. If I choose this reservation, then I can’t use Genie+ again until I’ve done Tower of Terror. So, basically I’m buying Genie+ for the one ride.

So, my question is - How long in advance do they allow you to make reservations? I’m not sure I want to buy Genie+ if all the Genie+ reservations for the day are gonna be gobbled up in the first few minutes of the day.

Hi Dan!

We're back with an answer to clarify the Genie+ selection process. You can only book the next available time window for Genie+ ride selections (versus the individual Lightning Lane attractions, which you can pick from the available time windows throughout the day). Back to Genie+, the next available time window could be five minutes later, or it could be hours later, depending on the ride and how busy it is. If you get a time window that is five minutes away, you can get in line right when the window opens and be able to select another Genie+ ride as soon as you've scanned in at the two touchpoints in the Lightning Lane queue (so theoretically, you could have your second Genie+ selection within minutes of using your first).

If the time window happens to be hours away (say, at noon, you make a Genie+ reservation for Slinky Dog Dash at 5 p.m.), then your ability to make another Genie+ selection is "frozen" for two hours. At 2 p.m., you would be able to make a second Genie+ selection, even though you haven't gone on Slinky Dog yet. Then you must use that one before making another.

Hi Betsy!

We're back with some more answers for you!

1) It is possible to join a Boarding Group for a virtual queue AND purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection for the same ride.

2) We were able to make individual Lightning Lane selections for both Seven Dwarfs and Expedition Everest just after 9 a.m. (note: the park must be open for whichever ride(s) you're attempting to get). In our example, both parks were already open, but say if we were planning to hop to EPCOT, which opened later, instead of Animal Kingdom, we would've need to wait to make a reservation for Remy's or Frozen Ever After until EPCOT opened.

3) No! You can let Genie know about your park hopping plans.

4) You can have overlapping times for Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane selections.

4. In general, you can purchase both Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane attraction selections! We're just not exactly sure yet if they can have overlapping times or if Genie will show you already have plans if you try to book them during the same time frame.

I agree. Disney was never cheap, but when we went to Universal Orlando pre-covid, there wasn't any point in being there after 11am. The stand by line did not move while the premium guests just kept walking up to ride. Now Disney has gone down the route of the Lexus lanes on the highway and there is no point for average people to go there anymore. It's sad to see something that used to be accessible taken away from people who just can not spent another $15x5=$75 each time they want to go on a ride. Sad, sad, sad, Disney is now just another elitist luxury.

That’s a lot of info!! Fantastic job covering this new feature! I do have one question. In the past the fast passes were limited to 3 a day and such… for this I see it’s once per day for each ride, but is there a limit? Like if magic kingdom has 8 rides for lightning lane, can I reserve for all 8 or do I have to be selective?
