Walt Disney World Lightning Lane Passes: Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions

Walt Disney World Lightning Lane Passes - FAQs Pinterest imageAs of July 24, 2024, we're speeding ahead to a whole new world of Walt Disney World Lightning Lane lingo and some changes that blend the new system with the familiar territory of the former FastPass+ (and pre-planning). If you like being able to plan out your park days all at once before your trip, then these changes are for you! We're sure you have a lot of questions about the new Disney Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Single Pass and overall Disney Genie Plus changes at Disney World. And beginning Oct. 30, 2024, a very limited number of Deluxe resort guests can opt into the all-in Lightning Lane Premier Pass at Disney World. Let's jump to it and answer those frequently asked questions about Walt Disney World Lightning Lanes and more.

What is Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the new name for "Genie+" at both Disneyland and Disney World. (Genie+ was an optional paid service that allows the user to skip the standby line by selecting a time to access a shorter called the Lightning Lane). The name change at Disney World also comes with changes in how and when you buy and select your attractions. You can now make these selections in advance of your visit in the My Disney Experience app (similar to how guests could pre-book FastPass+, but with some differences). You can select your arrival window for each attraction in advance at Disney World. (At Disneyland, you are offered the next available arrival window on a rolling basis only after you have entered a theme park.)

What is Lightning Lane Single Pass?

Lightning Lane Single Pass is the new name for "individual Lightning Lane" at both Disneyland and Disney World. The Single Pass allows guests to pay-per-ride to skip the line for a few in-demand rides that are not included in the Multi Pass (or Genie+). Guests purchase individually as a Single Pass. At Disney World, you can book up to two in-demand Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions per day of your trip in advance. (No changes to booking at Disneyland.)

Walt Disney World Lightning Lane Single Pass Attractions (you may book two per day, and you can choose the time you want to ride):

Disneyland Lightning Lane Single Pass Attractions (no changes — may purchase the same day after entering a theme park on a first-available basis):

Can I purchase Single Pass and Multi Pass Lightning Lanes without the other?

Yes. These services are separate from each other and are both optional. You can purchase both Single Pass and Multi Pass for the same day (which would give you up to two pre-planned Single Pass attractions and three Multi Pass attractions). Or you could buy one or two Single Pass attractions. You could also just purchase Multi Pass for the day. Or don't pay extra for any of it! Standby lines and virtual queues (when offered) are still ways to access the attractions at no additional cost.

When did Walt Disney World Lightning Lane replace Genie+?

Lightning Lane Passes took over for Genie+ July 24, 2024, at both Disney World and Disneyland.

Did anything change at Disneyland?

Disney Lightning Lane - Matterhorn Bobsleds

Just the names of the services changed at Disneyland — that's all. The following questions from this point forward relate to Walt Disney World Lightning Lane. If you have purchased a Disneyland ticket with Genie+, it will function with Disney Multi Pass, as of July 24. Undercover Tourist will continue to sell discount Disneyland tickets with Multi Pass included after the change. Hop over to our guide to Lightning Lane at Disneyland to learn more.

How far in advance can I plan if I'm staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel?

Walt Disney World Lightning Lane Passes - Animal Kingdom Lodge lobby

These changes offer a huge advantage for staying on-site at Walt Disney World. Disney World Resort hotel guests (along with guests at Shades of Green, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels or Walt Disney World Swan Reserve Hotel) can purchase and book their Lightning Lane arrivals up to seven days in advance of check-in for their length of stay up to 14 days.

You must have valid theme park admission for all the party members on your first day of eligibility to be able to book. You can purchase Lightning Lane passes as of 7 a.m. ET each day in the My Disney Experience app. You can purchase Lightning Lane Multi and Single Passes in the same transaction, per day. Just rinse and repeat for as many days as you wish to purchase Lightning Lanes during your hotel stay.

Walt Disney World Lightning Lane Passes - Opening Day pricing at Magic Kingdom

Once you are in the park and have redeemed your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction, you may look for a new selection in the My Disney Experience app (subject to availability). You can book one at a time. Once you have redeemed a ride, you may select another ride from any tier if available. If you have park hopping capabilities, you can also select a ride in a different park once you've used your first Multi Pass selection. Just think, "Use one, get one" — and goodbye 120-minute rule from the Genie+ days!

How far in advance can I plan if I'm staying off-site?

Guests staying off-site who have date-based tickets can purchase and begin pre-planning up to three days prior to their ticket’s start date, for the duration of their ticket.

Guests with other forms of admission (such as non-dated tickets, annual passes and Main Entrance passes) can purchase and begin pre-planning up to three days in advance of each day of their visit.

Can I still purchase Lightning Lane in the park/day of?

Yes. You can purchase Single Pass and Multi Pass Lightning Lanes on the day of your visit; however, selections are subject to availability.

How much is Lightning Lane at Disney World?

Pricing for Lightning Lane Multi Pass varies by park and by date. Pricing for Lightning Lane Single Pass varies by attraction and date. Since pricing is dynamic, the app will have the most up-to-date pricing.

To give some ballpark estimates, the following prices are valid for Nov. 3, 2024:

Multi Pass*

  • Magic Kingdom: $32 per guest
  • EPCOT: $24 per guest
  • Hollywood Studios: $29 per guest
  • Animal Kingdom: $19 per guest

Single Pass*

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: $13 per guest
  • TRON Lightcycle / Run: $21 per guest
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: $18 per guest
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: $25 per guest
  • Avatar Flight of Passage: $17 per guest

*prices subject to change

Where can I find pricing beyond today's date?

You'll need to go through the motions as if you're purchasing Multi Pass or Single Pass. Click the Lightning Lane "Purchase" button on the app's home page, Tip Board or the "Lightning Lane Passes" section from the three-line hamburger menu, which will pull up the calendar availability. Once you select a date, you'll see the pricing by theme park. You can generally see about three weeks' worth of availability at a time to view pricing — however, the app will stop you from moving forward if you're not within your eligible booking window.

How does Disney Multi Pass work when park hopping?

If you are park hopping or have an annual pass, you will choose three Multi Pass experiences and arrival windows for the same park. Then, once you arrive at the park and redeem your first Multi Pass attraction, you can book another one in any park. Unlike Genie+, there isn't a park hopping price, and the app will not allow you to purchase two different Multi Passes on the same day.

As for Single Pass attractions, you can purchase experiences in two different theme parks when you have a park hopper ticket (still limited to two per day, regardless of park).

Can I purchase Lightning Lane Passes during a special event?

Lightning Lane Passes are not available for purchase during special events, including After Hours events, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. (These special events are already limited-capacity, so you would experience shorter wait times than normal park hours.)

Can I purchase Lightning Lane Passes if an event includes early entry?

Some special events allow early admission before the event officially starts. For example, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party guests can enter as early as 4 p.m. before the party kicks off at 7 p.m. During the transitional time, guests can go on rides. However, Lightning Lane is not available for purchase if you only have an event ticket. If you also have valid daytime admission (whether it's a dated theme park ticket or an annual pass), you could purchase and use Lightning Lanes during the pre-party time.

How do I book for my party?

Disney Lightning Lane — Tiana posing with group

You'll need to do a little advanced prep work when traveling with a group:

  • Be sure to have all your party's theme park tickets in your My Disney Experience app.
  • Connect everyone as friends and family.
  • Have a list of your party's must-do experiences ready to go.
  • Select the date and park.
  • After you complete plans for your first day, you can book the next day, and so on.
  • You must book all members of your party together for the same rides initially. Then, you can then go back and modify the selections for people who want to choose a different ride or experience.

How do I book if I have a larger group than 2o people?

The maximum amount of people you can book on the same Lightning Lane experience is 20. If your group is larger than that, you will need to split up into smaller groups and have multiple people booking Lightning Lanes, whether for Multi Pass or Single Pass. While the entire group may not be able to have the exact same time window, you can aim for overlapping windows so that everyone can still ride together. For instance, if you need to split into two groups, Frog #1 might grab a Lightning Lane for Seven Dwarfs from 1:15-2:15 p.m. while Frog #2 books 1:30-2:30 p.m. That way, everyone would be able to ride sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

How do I modify my selections?

Once you've made your selections in the app, you'll see an option to modify. Once you modify, you'll have five minutes to confirm your selections. This is helpful for parties who may want to split up, or if you find you need to change your pre-planned arrival window.

Is anything staying the same as Disney Genie Plus at Disney World?

Yes. Here's what is staying the same:

  • You'll still redeem your Lightning Lane selections by holding a MagicBand, MagicBand+, Disney MagicMobile pass or RFID card to the touchpoint at the Lightning Lane entrance.
  • Disney PhotoPass lenses are still included.
  • Disney PhotoPass attraction-photo downloads from the day of the visit are still included.
  • You can still use free standby lines and virtual queues (when offered) to access rides for no additional cost.

Hi, thank you for all your intel!!!

I will check-in at WDW Resort on Oct 29th, and we want to buy the Premier Pass, but as we don't know the prices for sure, we would like to purchase Lightning Pases 7 days in advance for the most popular rides just in case we decide not to buy the premier pass... Do you know if I can upgrade the Lightning Mult Pases to a Premier Pases, or I just loose the money?

Hi Lily!

We're not toadally sure, but we would suggest purchasing Multi Pass in case the Premier Pass sells out as there will only be limited quantities. Lightning Lanes are generally nonrefundable and nontransferable, but you could try stopping by Guest Relations in any of the parks to explain the situation. There's no guarantee that they'd refund the Multi Passes, but it wouldn't hurt to ask nicely. The cast members onsite may have other suggestions and could help you modify your selections.

Hi,

Just a hypothetical question. I know if you buy the new premier pass at Disney World it is just for one park. You cannot park hop with it. But could you buy premier for one park and then buy the multipass for the 2nd park you will end your day in? I know that would be crazy expensive, but I was just curious. I'm only going to be there for two full days and we want to ride as many rides as possible.

Thanks!

Hi Brian!

We're not toadally sure until it launches. However, we do know that you cannot purchase Multi Pass for two parks on the same day (but if you're park hopping, you can make Multi Pass reservations at a different park once you've redeemed your first Lightning Lane). In the app, once you select which park you're purchasing Multi Pass for, it blocks out the others, so we think it could be the same for Premier Pass.

Are the tiers only relevant for pre booking? Or can I only select another tier 1 attraction after I’ve used one of my lightning lanes? The 3 rides I want to do in studios is Toy Story, slinky, and mickeys. So if I book two is there a time where I could book that third?

Reply

Hi Pauline!

The tiers just apply to the advance selections. In your case, you could pick either Slinky Dog Dash or Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway as the Tier 1 pick, and then select Toy Story Mania and another Tier 2 ride. Once you scan into any of the three rides, you can make another selection, no matter the tier — so that's when you could book Slinky Dog or Runaway Railway (whichever one you didn't choose), subject to availability.

I think I know the answer to the question but I want to be sure. Our first park reservation if for AK but we don't plan on using any lightning lane passes (single or multi). We then plan to hop over to EPCOT. Can I make a single lightning lane reservation at EPCOT for Guardians even though my park reservations that day are for AK? My tickets are park hoppers.

Hi Ryan!

You would need to wait until it's close to your return time window to scan into the ride. The touchpoints usually have a small grace period of about 5 minutes early and 15 minutes late, but anything outside of that window is up to the cast member's discretion.

Hi Missy!

You can make up to three selections in advance, but you don't have to pre-book all three. We'd recommend booking all three to maximize the use of Multi Pass (that way, there's less of a chance that reservations could run out later, particularly for a popular ride).

Hi, what I found confusing was whether the multi pass allowed three rides from each park e.g. 3 rides from magic kingdom, 3 rides from EPCOT, 3 rides from Hollywood studios and 3 rides from animal kingdom making that 12 rides total. Or is it only 3 rides out of all those parks making it only 3 rides total. I just want to make sure if I’m understanding this correctly.

Hi Kiara!

For the three advance selections, it's just limited to one park. You select one park to start in per day (you can't purchase Multi Pass for two or more parks on the same day) and you select three rides in that park in advance. But once you use your first selection (any of the three advance ones), you can make another reservation at the same park or a different park if you're park hopping. You can continue to "use one and get one" until park close. Hope this helps!

Hi Meg!

It's not possible to purchase two Multi Passes for different parks on the same day. However, once you use your first Multi Pass experience, you can start making reservations for rides at other parks. So you would just have to purchase Multi Pass for the first park that you want to use it at (in your case, it would be EPCOT, unless you don't want to use it there and instead start using it at Hollywood Studios). For Single Pass though, you can purchase TRON at the same time you purchase Multi Pass at a different park as long as you have a Park Hopper. The app will prompt you to pick which one you're going to first, so it can automatically find times that meet your schedule, though you can modify the time window. (You can purchase up to two Single Passes per day, which can be for two different parks.)

The day of my trip after I have scanned in at Remy, can I modify my tier 2 to a tier 1 or no matter what, you only get 1 tier 1 ride?

Thanks

Hi Drew!

We have not specifically tested out modifying an advance Tier 2 reservation to a Tier 1. But we do know that once you scan in and use your first Multi Pass reservation, you can make a new Multi Pass reservation for either level, so we suspect that applies to modifications too.

Therefore a question on the new lightning lane system: Does anybody already have experience on how the rides available for selection 3 days before the first day in the park? How much of a difference do the addl. 4 days for on-site make?

Also, the early entry perk for preferred hotels like Hilton is still available, isn't it?

Thanks for your help.

My party of 8 is staying on property but some of us arrive a few days after the others. Example, half is arriving Saturday and the other half is arriving Tuesday. I was hoping I could book them all on the Saturday before arrival and then modify my lightning lanes to add the rest of the party once they are eligible on Tuesday. Any idea?

We are travelling from Ireland (family 3ad 2ch) and have 14 day Magic Pass - do we now also need to pay for LLMP on top of the tickets we have already purchased?

Secondary question: We land on 23rd Dec, are we only able to book into/onto attractions once our location setting on the app recognises us within the US? Or can we book attractions for the 24th whilst still in Ireland on 21st / 22nd Dec? Thanks in Advance

Can we purchase both at the same time and book what we need? Modify as needed? We will have 4 day park hoppers. Also, can you ride on the dame attraction more then once? I've seen people saying it will only allow one time a day. Any difference if we purchase both or just the multipass?

Hi A Walters!

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a Single Pass attraction so, correct, it is not included with Multi Pass and you would need to purchase it at an additional cost. You can purchase Single Pass and Multi Pass for the same day in the same transaction. You may modify times — if you're still in the advance booking window, Multi Pass selections will need to be within the same tier level and park. But once you use your first Multi Pass, you can make new selections and modifications for any tier level or park if you're park hopping. You can only use Lightning Lane (Multi Pass or Single Pass) once per attraction, per day.

What if a ride I want is not available on my 7 day mark? Can I keep randomly checking to see if it opens up or will that mess up the stuff I have already picked?

Hi Disney Girl!

You can only hold three Multi Pass rides at a time, but you can try to modify one of the selections you made, so if a ride pops back up, you can switch it out. If it's in advance, it can only be from the same park and tier level. But if you've already used your first Multi Pass selection, you can modify to any ride no matter the tier (including rides in a different park if you have park hopping capabilities). You have five minutes to confirm your modifications, and if you don't, the reservation remains the same.

Thanks for this article! My question is- can multiple people in a party be making reservations at the same time? So for example, Person 1 is making the Day 1 reservations, Person 2 is making the Day 2 reservations, and so on?

Hi Susan!

Yes! We'd recommend making plans from different accounts but still ensuring that everyone is linked together under My Family and Friends.

Hi, we are international guests staying at a Disney Resort being DVC members. I’ve read that we would only be able to book lightning lane once we arrive in the US and not before, is this correct?

Hi Dom!

We have been able to confirm that international guests may purchase Multi Pass and Single Pass in advance as soon as they enter the U.S.

Hi Sher!

Yes, toadally! Multi Pass purchases are by day, so you can choose to purchase for only one day, every day or any number of days in between.

Let's say I have a 14 day resort reservation and a 10 day park hopper ticket. I prebook multi-pass for 10 park days, leaving me with 4 days for other resort activities and/or rest. What happens if I want to swap a non park day to a park day. I have seen no info regarding this and Disney says no refunds and non transferable.

Hi Mike!

You can modify the date if you need to switch plans. However, specific offerings are subject to availability, so when you go to modify, it will show which rides are available for the new date and you can choose from that selection. If you need further assistance, we'd recommend hopping to Guest Relations.

I believe I read something that the same selections must be made for all members of the party when booking (i.e. everyone gets a space mountain multipass). Is this correct, and if so, are there options to modify after booking (say, if someone isn't interested in riding space mountain)?

Hi Susan!

That's correct - when you first reserve, you'll need to include your whole party. However, as soon as it's reserved, you'll see a "modify" button in the app to adjust. Hope this helps!

Great question, Ray - since it's on refurbishment, it's not currently listed on Disney's site. But we'll keep our eyes peeled!

We have a large family and typically stay off property to accommodate all of us. Any idea whether you can see ride availability before purchasing if you fall into the 3-day window? This brings back bad memories of the old FP system where hardly any of the top tier rides were available to off property guests :-(

Hi Lauren!

To see availability during advance booking windows, you'll need to go through the motions as if you're purchasing Multi Pass or Single Pass. Then, you'll be prompted to select a date. Once you pick a date, you can see availability for Single Pass options and can choose which park's Multi Pass you want to look at. If you select a Multi Pass, it will pop up with the Tier 1 and Tier 2 options. The last screen shows all of your Multi Pass and Single Pass selections together and an option to modify any of the arrival windows. All of this is accessible within your booking window before you have to pay.

Hi Roberta!

Disney Genie+ will be in use until July 24, so it is our understanding that you'll be able to book the new Lightning Lanes on July 24 for the remaining days of your trip.

We will be staying at a Disney Springs hotel which includes Disney benefits including the 30 minutes early theme park entry every morning. Does that mean we would also be able to book with the new lightening lane system 7 days in advance? Or would we fall into the 3 days in advance bucket still?

Hi Megan!

The early-planning Lightning Lane benefit is only available to guests staying at Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, Walt Disney World Swan Hotel, Walt Disney World Swan Reserve and Shades of Green. All other guests would fall under the 3-days in advance bucket.

Hi LeAnne!

Disney Genie+ will be in use until the transition happens on July 24, so our expectation is that the new Lightning Lanes won't be available until July 24, but you can get a day's head start at that time.

You must have valid theme park admission for all the party members on your first day of eligibility to be able to book.

this raised a question for me, our check-in day is 8/6 but my first date on my tickets purchased from you is 8/7, which is the first day of my eligibility? Which date do I count back 7 days from? thanks for clearing this up.

Hi Deb!

When staying at a Disney or other eligible hotel, you should be able to purchase starting 7 days before the first day of your Resort stay, for the length of your stay (up to 14 days).

Thanks so much for breaking this down. My question is... we are staying on property Oct 30-Nov 1, then moving off property Nov 1-3, then moving back on property Nov 3. Will I be able to book multipasses from Oct 30 for the whole trip, or because of the break to off property do have multiple windows?

Hi Michelle!

Good question! While we don't know for certain since it's a new system, we would expect that you have multiple booking windows since the length of stay gets broken up. We think the system would recognize the first reservation from Oct. 30-Nov. 1 as a full stay.
